The Presence of Blastocystis in Tibetan Antelope (Pantholops hodgsonii).

Blastocystis is a protozoan that parasitizes the intestines. A number of hosts of Blastocystis have been found, including human and animals. However, there has been no research on the prevalence of Blastocystis in Tibetan antelope. Here, a molecular test was performed using 627 Tibetan antelope fecal samples collected on Tibet in China from 2019 to 2020. The result showed that 30 (4.8%) samples were Blastocystis positive. The highest prevalence of Blastocystis was in Shuanghu County (25/209, 12.0%), followed by Shenza County (2/103, 1.9%), Nyima County (3/182, 1.6%), and Baigoin County (0/133,…

Impacts of hydrologic variations on chemical weathering and solute sources in the Min River basin, Himalayan-Tibetan region.

Feedback between hydrologic variations and chemical weathering is thought to play a crucial role in modulating global carbon cycling. The mechanisms associated with the impacts of hydrologic variations on solute sources and chemical weathering were evaluated by examining the relationships between river discharge and hydrochemistry based on high-frequency sampling of the Min River, which originates in the Himalayan-Tibetan region. Fluid transit times and flow pathways vary with changes in discharge, thereby affecting various biogeochemical processes. Although shorter transit times occur during …

[A case of severe pneumonia with Q fever].

Q fever, also known as query fever, is a naturally occurring zoonotic disease caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii. This paper reported the case of a 37-year-old male patient who developed symptoms of headache, fever, and dyspnea after delivering yaks. Having received ineffective treatment at other medical facilities, he was referred to Tibet Autonomous Region People's Hospital. A diagnosis of Q fever was confirmed through an etiological examination of bronchial lavage sample. The patient was subsequently treated with mechanical ventilation and effective antibiotics. Severe pneumonia resul…

Interactions between kidney proteins and metabolism in Tibetan sheep at different altitudes.

When oxygen supply to the kidneys is restricted, it may trigger a series of acid-base imbalances and pathological states, subsequently inducing hypoxic adaptive mechanisms in the kidneys. However, the protein-metabolism interaction mechanisms underlying this process remain unclear. Therefore, this study conducted proteomic and metabolomic analyses on Tibetan sheep kidneys collected at three distinct altitudes (2500 m, 3500 m and 4500 m) to elucidate the protein-metabolism interaction mechanisms during hypoxic adaptation. The results demonstrate a synergistic relationship between proteins and m…

Seasonal reversal of river-groundwater exchange controls dissolved organic matter dynamics across the arid margin of the Tibetan Plateau.

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a key regulator of carbon cycling and water quality within surface water-groundwater interaction (SGI) zones. However, how the seasonal reorganization of SGI governs DOM dynamics in high-altitude arid basins remains poorly understood. Focusing on the Golmud River Basin along the arid Tibetan Plateau margin, this study systematically examines the spatiotemporal evolution of river-groundwater exchange and its influence on DOM sources, composition, and transport along a continuous transect from mountainous headwaters through alluvial fans to salinized plains. Res…

Combined supplementation with Lactobacillus sp. and Bifidobacterium thermacidophilum isolated from Tibetan pigs improves growth performance, immunity, and microbiota composition in weaned piglets.

Probiotics, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, promote growth in piglets by modulating gut microbiota composition and improving the host immune system. A strain of Lactobacillus sp. and Bifidobacterium thermacidophilum were previously isolated from fresh feces of Tibetan pigs. The effects of these isolated strains on growth performance, intestinal morphology, immunity, microbiota composition, and their metabolites were evaluated in weaned piglets. Thirty crossbred piglets were selected and fed either a basal diet (CON), a basal diet supplemented with aureomycin (ANT), or a basal diet s…

The draft genome of the Tibetan partridge (Perdix hodgsoniae) provides insights into its phylogenetic position and high-altitude adaptation.

The Tibetan partridge (Perdix hodgsoniae) is a widely distributed endemic species in high-altitude areas across the Tibetan Plateau where the hypoxia, lower temperature and high ultraviolet radiation are pivotal factors influencing survival. However, the underlying genetic adaptation of the Tibetan partridge to extreme environments remains uncertain due to limited genomic resources. Similarly, the phylogenetic position of Perdix within Phasianidae remains controversial due to lacking information. Consequently, we de novo assembled and annotated the whole genome of the Tibetan partridge. The ge…

Expression and role of melatonin membrane receptors in the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis of Tibetan sheep in a plateau pastoral area.

MTNR1A and MTNR1B, two high-affinity MT membrane receptors found in mammals, mediate the activity of MT on the HPGA to regulate animal reproduction. Nevertheless, the expression patterns and function of the MTNR1A and MTNR1B genes in the HPTA of seasonal estrus sheep and perennial estrus sheep have not been elucidated. We studied the expression of MTNR1A and MTNR1B in the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis (HPTA) of Tibetan sheep at different reproductive stages using histochemistry, enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELSIA), scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, …

Emerging Echinococcus Shiquicus Infection of Asian Badgers in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

Echinococcosis is a zoonotic disease currently causing significant public health issues worldwide. The emerging and the expansion of Echinococcus spp. tapeworms in wildlife species and habitats are indeed underrecognized. Here, using infrared camera surveillance followed by morphological and genetic characterization, Echinococcus shiquicus (E. shiquicus), tapeworms were unexpectedly detected from Asian badgers in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau of China for the first time. In specific, an area of 3,939 km2 at an altitude of 3,691-5,339 m above sea level was monitored, from which fecal samples were…

Prevalence and Subtype Distribution of Blastocystis in Tibetan Sheep in Qinghai Province, Northwestern China.

Blastocystis is one of the most common intestinal protists in humans and a great number of animals, including sheep and goats. High prevalence and multiple subtypes of Blastocystis have been reported in sheep in several regions of China and elsewhere. However, there is a dearth of knowledge about Blastocystis in Tibetan sheep. A total of 761 fecal samples were collected from Tibetan sheep in seven counties of Qinghai Province, northwestern China, and were examined for the prevalence and subtypes of Blastocystis using molecular technology based on the partial small subunit ribosomal RNA gene of…

Disease burden of echinococcosis in Tibetan communities-A significant public health issue in an underdeveloped region of western China.

Echinococcosis is considered by the World Health Organization (WHO) to be a neglected zoonotic disease in the world. Some Tibetan communities were found to be highly endemic for echinococcosis just 20 years ago. Until recently, we were able to understand the overall disease burden of echinococcosis in Tibetan communities after prevalence data being available from nationwide investigations from 2012 to 2016. Data were abstracted from 9 publications regarding to echinococcosis prevalence between 2016-2018; from 10 data bases on echinococcosis prevalence for 151 Tibetan counties; and statistics o…

Grass height and transmission ecology of Echinococcus multilocularis in Tibetan communities, China.

BACKGROUND: Alveolar echinococcosis is a major zoonosis of public health significance in western China. Overgrazing was recently assumed as a potential risk factor for transmission of alveolar echinococcosis. The research was designed to further test the overgrazing hypothesis by investigating how overgrazing influenced the burrow density of intermediate host small mammals and how the burrow density of small mammals was associated with dog Echinococcus multilocularis infection. METHODS: The study sites were chosen by previous studies which found areas where the alveolar echinococcosis was pre

Impact of overgrazing on the transmission of Echinococcus multilocularis in Tibetan pastoral communities of Sichuan Province, China.

BACKGROUND: Overgrazing was assumed to increase the population density of small mammals that are the intermediate hosts of Echinococcus multilocularis, the pathogen of alveolar echinococcosis in the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. This research tested the hypothesis that overgrazing might promote Echinococcus multilocularis transmission through increasing populations of small mammal, intermediate hosts in Tibetan pastoral communities. METHODS: Grazing practices, small mammal indices and dog Echinococcus multilocularis infection data were collected to analyze the relation between overgrazing and Echino…
