This study focuses on the parasitic associations of mites and ticks infesting reptiles and amphibians through a multifocal approach. Herein, reptiles (n= 3,596) and amphibians (n= 919) were examined to ensure representativeness of the Brazilian herpetofauna megadiversity. The overall prevalence was calculated to better understand which were the preferred hosts for each order of Acari (Trombidiformes, Mesostigmata and Ixodida), as well as to determine which orders frequently parasitize reptiles and amphibians in Brazil, and their host specificity. Infestation rates were calculated [prevalence,

Spring chickens were used for feeding Argas persicus (females) daily over one week during both winter and summer seasons. Acquired resistance to ticks was monitored by: 1) failure of ticks to replenish a blood meal from chickens bitten repeatedly by the infesting ticks during winter and summer seasons; 2) measurements of anti-tick activity in the chicken sera; 3) detection of changes in their serum proteins. Chickens were bled after the 4th feeding, during the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th weeks post-feeding. The titre of anti-tick antibody was determined in the chicken sera by an enzyme-linked immuno

Dogs accessing natural areas in Brazil are exposed to tick species typically associated with wild carnivores, some of which are vectors of pathogenic Rickettsia. Infested dogs may transport ticks into households and act as amplifying hosts for these agents. Iguaçu National Park (INP), a major inland Atlantic Forest reserve in Brazil, harbors at least nine tick species and five Rickettsia species. This study evaluated tick infestation in 116 rural dogs from properties along most of the 420 km perimeter of INP and 22 urban dogs from forest-adjacent areas in Foz do Iguaçu. Sera from 39 dogs were

The development of interventions that reduce Lyme disease incidence remains a challenge. Reservoir-targeted approaches aiming to reduce tick densities or tick infection prevalence with Borrelia burgdorferi have emerged as promising ways to reduce the density of infected ticks. Acaricides of the isoxazoline family offer high potential for reducing infestation of ticks on small mammals as they have high efficacy at killing feeding ticks for a long period. Fluralaner baits were recently demonstrated as effective, in the laboratory, at killing Ixodes scapularis larvae infesting Peromyscus mice, th

INTRODUCTION: The Cape hare (L. capensis) is one of the most common game species in Algeria, although its populations have declined in recent years. This wild lagomorph may host ticks, which act as vectors for a range of zoonotic pathogens. The purpose of this study is to fill the gaps in current knowledge regarding the presence of ticks in Algerian cape hare species and better understand the potential implications for public health.
METHODS: During the 2023-2024 hunting seasons in the High Plateaus of Algeria, a total of 47 lagomorphs (44 Cape hares and 3 wild rabbits) were collected from 20

BACKGROUND: Haemaphysalis longicornis is the major tick affecting dogs in most of the East Asia/Pacific region and has recently been detected in a number of areas of the USA. This tick is a vector for a number of pathogens of dogs, other mammals and humans. In this study, the efficacy of a single oral administration of sarolaner (Simparica®, Zoetis) at the minimum label dosage (2 mg/kg) was evaluated against an existing infestation of H. longicornis and subsequent weekly reinfestations for 5 weeks after treatment.
METHODS: Sixteen dogs were ranked on pretreatment tick counts and randomly allo

BACKGROUND: Amblyomma cajennense is the main vector of Rickettsia rickettsii which causes Brazilian spotted fever. This adult tick preferably infests horses and capybaras, but has low host specificity during its immature stages, thus posing a threat to humans and dogs. In this study, the efficacy of sarolaner (Simparic™/Simparica®, Zoetis) when administered once orally to dogs at 2 mg/kg was evaluated against induced infestations of A. cajennense nymphs for up to 35 days after treatment.
METHODS: Based on pretreatment tick counts, 20 dogs were randomly allocated to treatment with sarolaner (S

Ixodes scapularis is considered a significant medical and veterinary arthropod pest, capable of transmitting several pathogens that cause disease in humans and animals. Previous work has identified two distinct populations of I. scapularis in the United States (northern and southern), characterized by differences in their genetics and behavior. This study aimed to characterize and compare the lateral movement and feeding behaviors of nymphal I. scapularis between the northern and southern populations in the United States. To improve our knowledge on host-parasite interaction, the study was undertaken on Rhipicephalus microplus infestation in cross breed cattle. This tick, being a voracious blood sucker, remains attached to the skin for prolonged period and inoculates saliva during blood feeding. Biomolecules present in the saliva have detrimental effects on host system. The present study deals with the effects of R. microplus in artificially infected nine months old cattle for a period of 21 days. There was physiological alteration during tick infestation in terms of body temperature, pulse, and respiration rat

Specific pathogen-free dogs were experimentally infected with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto using nymphal or adult female Ixodes scapularis ticks artificially infected with spirochetes by capillary feeding. The ticks were capillary fed B. burgdorferi isolate 610, previously isolated from a dog with Lyme disease and grown in BSK medium. This isolate induced clinical signs in the dogs similar to those for dogs infested with ticks naturally infected with B. burgdorferi. Adult ticks were more efficient than nymphs in transmitting spirochetes to the dogs. One of five dogs infested with nymphal

BACKGROUND: As obligate blood-feeding arthropods, ticks transmit pathogens to humans and domestic animals more often than other arthropod vectors. Livestock farming plays a vital role in the rural economy of Pakistan, and tick infestation causes serious problems with it. However, research on tick species diversity and tick-borne pathogens has rarely been conducted in Pakistan. In this study, a systematic investigation of the tick species infesting livestock in different ecological regions of Pakistan was conducted to determine the microbiome and pathobiome diversity in the indigenous ticks.

Clinical, clinico-pathological and serological studies were performed in sheep experimentally infected with Babesia ovis. Acute babesiosis occurred in all the lambs infested with adult Rhipicephalus bursa ticks and in one lamb infested with the larvae. The rate of parasitaemia and the degree of anaemia were not correlated. Decrease in the packed-cell volume ranged from 30 to 40%. Parasitized erythrocytes were not observed to block capillaries in the brain, which explained the absence of nervous symptoms in acute babesiosis. The kidneys were the most severely affected organs, exhibiting acute g

The aim of this investigation was to analyze predilection sites of ticks on avian hosts according to tick species and developmental stages, as well as individual and ecological characters of bird species (i.e., their age, habitat type, seasonality). For this, 916 ticks were removed from 289 birds in Hungary at 23 different places in the course of one year. The location of ticks on birds was recorded whenever possible. Ticks were identified as Ixodes ricinus (n=595), Ixodes frontalis (n=34), Ixodes arboricola (n=21), Ixodes acuminatus (n=1), Haemaphysalis concinna (n=246), Haemaphysalis punctat
