Preventing tobacco and alcohol use among high school students through a hybrid online and in-class intervention: A randomized controlled trial.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

OBJECTIVE: School-based health promotion programs can have a positive effect on behavioral and social outcomes among adolescents. Yet, limited classroom time and suboptimal program implementation can reduce the potential impact of these interventions. In the present randomized trial, we tested the effectiveness of a classroom-based substance use prevention program that was adapted for hybrid implementation. METHOD: The hybrid adaptation included eight asynchronous e-learning modules that presented didactic content and eight classroom sessions designed to facilitate discussion and practice of

A phone-based tobacco use cessation program for people living with HIV in Uganda and Zambia: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT) and short messaging service (SMS)-based tobacco cessation interventions have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing tobacco use in many populations, but evidence is needed on which tailored treatments are most efficacious in meeting the complex medical and psychosocial factors confronting people living with HIV (PLWH) in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This paper describes the protocol of a study to test the efficacy of both NRT and a tailored SMS-based tobacco use cessation intervention among PLWH in Uganda and Zambia. METHODS: In a randomized control

Evidence of gene-environment interaction for the RUNX2 gene and environmental tobacco smoke in controlling the risk of cleft lip with/without cleft palate.

This study examined the association between 49 markers in the Runt-related transcription factor 2 (RUNX2) gene and nonsyndromic cleft lip with/without cleft palate (CL/P) among 326 Chinese case-parent trios, while considering gene-environment (GxE) interaction and parent-of-origin effects. Five single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) showed significant evidence of linkage and association with CL/P and these results were replicated in an independent European sample of 825 case-parent trios. We also report compelling evidence for interaction between markers in RUNX2 and environmental tobacco smok

Effectiveness of a capacity-building training for knowledge and practices of tobacco control and oral cancer prevention: a pre-post study from rural northern India.

BACKGROUND: Smokeless tobacco products and areca nut, widely used in Uttar Pradesh, are strongly associated with oral cancer, which ranks among the top three cancers in India. Data from the Population-Based Cancer Registry, Varanasi, highlights one of the highest oral cancer burdens across India. Despite the availability of national guidelines, frontline health workers (ASHAs) remain underutilised for tobacco cessation counselling and oral cancer symptom-based screening. This study assessed the impact of a structured training intervention on their knowledge, practices, and legal awareness. ME

Early Risk of Tobacco Smoke Exposure and Preschoolers' Hot and Cool Inhibitory Control: Promotive and Protective Roles of Maternal Positivity in Early Mother-child Interaction.

Early tobacco smoke exposure (TSE) in utero and/or during the first years after birth poses threats to the development of child executive functioning and self-regulation skills, including inhibitory control. Efforts are still needed to examine under what conditions such effects may occur and thus identify modifiable intervention targets. In addition, a distinction between cool and hot inhibitory control is also important to obtain greater nuance in such links. The cool inhibitory control refers to children's suppression of prepotent automatic responses to a distracting stimulus in solving arbi

Carcinogen metabolism and DNA adducts in human lung tissues as affected by tobacco smoking or metabolic phenotype: a case-control study on lung cancer patients.

Individual variations in activity of pulmonary enzymes that metabolize tobacco-derived carcinogens may affect an individual's cancer risk from cigarette smoking. To investigate whether some of these enzymes (e.g., cytochrome P450IA-related) can serve as markers for carcinogen-induced DNA damage accumulating in the lungs of smokers, non-tumorous lung tissue specimens were taken during surgery from middle-aged men with either lung cancer (n = 54) or non-neoplastic lung disease (n = 20). Phase I (AHH, ECDE) and phase II (EH, UDPGT, GST) enzyme activities, glutathione and malondialdehyde contents

Increasing the demand for and use of effective smoking-cessation treatments reaping the full health benefits of tobacco-control science and policy gains--in our lifetime.

More adults in the United States have quit smoking than remain current smokers. But 45 million adults (20.9%) continue to smoke, with highest rates among low socioeconomic status (SES), blue-collar, and Native American populations. More than two thirds (70%) of adult smokers want to quit, and approximately 40% make a serious quit attempt each year, but only 20%-30% of quitters use an effective behavioral counseling or pharmacologic treatment. The lowest rates of treatment use are seen in the populations with the highest rates of tobacco use. Fully harvesting the last 4 decades of progress in t

Developing and testing the effectiveness of a novel online integrated treatment for problem gambling and tobacco smoking: a protocol for an open-label randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Gambling and tobacco smoking are highly comorbid among North American adults. However, there is a paucity of treatment options that are integrated (i.e. targeting both gambling and tobacco smoking simultaneously), accessible, and evidence based. METHODS: The aim of this two-arm open-label randomized controlled trial is to examine the effectiveness of an online, self-guided integrated treatment for problem gambling and tobacco smoking. A target sample of 214 participants will be recruited and be randomized into either an 8-week integrated or gambling only control condition. Both co

Smoking cessation opportunities in severe mental illness (tobacco intensive motivational and estimate risk - TIMER-): study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: There is an increased risk of premature death in people with severe mental illness (SMI). Respiratory disorders and cardiovascular disease are leading causes of increased mortality rates in these patients, and tobacco consumption remains the most preventable risk factor involved. Developing new tools to motivate patients towards cessation of smoking is a high priority. Information on the motivational value of giving the lung age and prevention opportunities is unknown in this high-risk population. METHODS/DESIGN: This article describes in detail a protocol developed to evaluate an
