The oldest known complex terrestrial vertebrate community included hypercarnivorous varanopids, a successful clade of amniotes with wide geographic and temporal distributions. Little is known about their dentition and feeding behaviour, but with the unprecedented number of specimens of the varanopid Mesenosaurus from cave deposits in Oklahoma, we show that it exhibited serrations on the tooth crowns, and exceptionally rapid rates of development and reduced longevity relative to other terrestrial amniotes. In contrast, the coeval large apex predator Dimetrodon greatly increased dental longevity

The use of fixed retainers at the end of a course of orthodontic treatment has become standard practice. The main complication that can occur with fixed retainers is the detachment of the wire from one or more teeth. A less common complication is unwanted tooth movement. This article presents a patient with extreme tooth movement associated with a mandibular fixed retainer. Ten years after orthodontic treatment, a 26-year-old male sought treatment for post-orthodontic movement of the mandibular anterior 6 teeth. Despite the fixed retainer still being attached to all teeth, the apex of the righ

Inflammatory root resorption is a serious complication of dental trauma, which leads to progressive loss of the root structure. The purpose of this report was to present a case of perforating inflammatory root resorption in a previously traumatized young incisor tooth with incomplete root development. A 12-year-old girl, who had suffered a traumatic dental injury 4 years earlier, was referred with symptoms of pain and swelling in a permanent maxillary central incisor. The tooth had been root-filled and had thin dentinal walls and a wide open apex. During retreatment, a perforating resorption s

The decision to retain immature permanent tooth with pulp disease is problematical. Restoring the tooth would normally involve some form of pulp capping/pulpotomy procedure or a more radical pulpectomy and root canal treatment. Pulp capping/pulpotomy procedures, where all or part of the pulp is retained, relies upon an accurate assessment of the pulp condition, and the careful management of the remaining healthy tissue. Pulpectomy or root canal treatment is technically difficult as the root apex is open with the result that conventional preparation and filling techniques are compromised. On th

INTRODUCTION: This article describes an apexogenesis report of an 8-year old boy referred to our clinic 4 weeks after an impact trauma to the maxillary left central incisor that caused a complicated crown fracture and pulpal exposure.
METHODS: In the radiographic examination, the tooth was observed to be immature. After access cavity preparation, cervical pulpotomy was performed, and the remaining pulp was capped with calcium enriched mixture (CEM) cement. The crown was restored by using the fractured incisal segment on the next day.
RESULTS: The radiographic and clinical examinations on the

This article has accomplished four objectives. First of all, the most commonly impacted teeth have been identified. Aside from the third molars, these teeth include the maxillary canines, maxillary central incisors, mandibular second premolars, and mandibular second molars. Second, the cause of impaction has been discussed. In most situations, these unerupted teeth have been diverted or are angulated aberrantly during development. Once the root apex has closed, they lose their potential to erupt. Third, the various surgical procedures to uncover these impacted teeth have been described. Three

BACKGROUND: The insurgence of external inflammatory lateral resorption (EILR) is one of the consequences of dental trauma and it can further complicate the prognosis of a compromised tooth. Long term treatment with Ca(OH)2 is the gold standard to manage EILR, and, recently, regenerative endodontic procedure (REP) has been suggested as an alternative clinical approach. The purpose of this report is to describe a case of post-traumatic EILR treated using REP.
CASE REPORT: A 9 years-old girl experienced an extrusive luxation of tooth #11. At the first visit the tooth was asymptomatic and respons

Tooth autotransplantation is a procedure which provides the extraction of an erupted or impacted tooth and its repositioning to another site in the oral cavity. This Case Report describes a successful case of two autotransplantations of open-apex mandibular third molars in place of the hopeless first mandibular molars with the use of L-PRF in a growing patient. A 15-year-old male patient was referred to the Dental Clinic for the extractions of the two hopeless mandibular first molars. Autotransplantation was considered the best treatment option for both sites 36 and 46, because the presence of

The failures in endodontic treatments are often related to anatomical variations. Some anatomical changes in anterior teeth occur in patients with cleft lip and palate. This paper aims to report the endodontic retreatment of a maxillary central incisor with two roots and two canals on a patient who presents cleft lip and palate. A male patient, 11-year-old, reported pain when chewing related to the left maxillary central incisor tooth (tooth 21) which featured a sinus tract after primary endodontic treatment. In periapical radiograph, it was observed an alteration on the anatomy of the root on

This study presents a method development and evaluation framework for assessing longitudinally the dynamic alveolar bone changes in a murine periodontal injury model using 3D Slicer software. Accurate and reproducible measurement of bone loss is crucial for periodontal research, yet traditional two-dimensional (2D) histological approaches lack the ability to capture three-dimensional (3D) alterations, while inconsistencies in image alignment, region of interest (ROI) selection, and segmentation have limited the widespread adoption of 3D micro-CT analysis in small animal models. Here, we presen

REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Extraction of cheek teeth (CT) by the conventional repulsion technique requires general anaesthesia and carries a high rate of post operative complications. Consequently, an alternative method of extraction, i.e. orally in standing horses, was evaluated.
HYPOTHESIS: The need for and risks of general anaesthesia could be avoided and post extraction sequelae reduced by performing extractions orally in standing horses.
METHODS: One hundred mainly younger horses (median age 8, range 2-18 years) with firmly attached CT that required extraction because of apical infec

Dental invagination or dens in dente is a rare malformation with a widely varied morphology. Radiographically, the affected tooth shows an infolding of the enamel and dentin that can extend to within the pulp cavity and the root and sometimes to the root apex. It can occur in both primary and permanent teeth, and its prevalence is reported to be 1.7% to 10%. The dental anomalies observed in association with dental invagination include taurodontia, microdontia, supernumerary teeth, gemination, and dentinogenesis imperfecta. This article presents a clinical case in which a radiographic finding c

PURPOSE: To compare the curative effect of microscopic revascularization and apexification in the treatment of pulp necrosis of permanent teeth.
METHODS: Seventy-five cases of pulp necrosis in young permanent teeth were divided into two groups according to different treatment methods. Group A (n=30) underwent revascularization under microscope, while group B (n=45) underwent apexification. The treatment effect and pain improvement of the two groups were compared. The changes of the wall thickness and root canal length of the affected teeth before and after treatment were observed, and the bon

External apical root resorption is a common consequence of orthodontic treatment. A number of treatment-related factors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of root resorption in orthodontic patients; however recent evidence suggests that genetic factors also play a major role in the development of this condition. Herein, we review prevalence, diagnosis and aetiology of root resorption with a particular emphasis on the effect of genetic variation and orthodontic forces, as well as discuss effective prevention strategies.

This work describes a case of "dens invaginatus" and analyzes the possible aspects of this malformation. An unusual type of dens invaginatus was detected in a young patient corresponding to the maxillary lateral incisor and showing extensive periradicular radiolucency and a vestibular fistula. The radiographic and tomographic examination revealed two apices: one wide open in the distal part of the root and the other normally formed in the mesial. Nonsurgical endodontic treatment was performed by using the "one-step apexification technique," filling both apexes with mineral trioxide aggregate f
