[Epidemiology of teeth hypersensitivity].

A clinical examination of 98 patients aged 20 to 75 years was carried out to identifyclinical and epidemiological features of hard tooth tissueshypersensitivity. The survey found out what stimuli (cold, hot, sour, mechanical, chemical) cause the appearance of dental hyperesthesia. The detailed survey of the affected area aimed to determine the presence of dental caries, gingival recession, wedge-shaped defects, erosions, microcracks and chipped enamel, as well as wear of the tooth crown. Forty-threepatients of 98 (43.88%) had tooth sensitivity. Most affected age group was 25-34 years (33%). Am

Extracellular matrix degradation by host matrix metalloproteinases in restorative dentistry and endodontics: An overview.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a group of over 25 secreted and membrane-bound enzymes responsible for pericellular substrate degeneration. In response to injury, they play key roles in morphogenesis, wound healing, tissue repair and remodeling. They have been isolated from dentin, odontoblasts, pulp and periapical tissue. They play a major role in the formation of dentin matrix and secondary and tertiary dentin. These are also responsible for releasing dentinal growth factors. MMP family proteins elicit a dual role in the pathogenesis of inflammation, stimulating protective innate and/or

Bariatric surgery and implications for oral health: a case report.

A case representative of issues dental practitioners may face when providing care to patients with a history of bariatric surgery is reviewed. Meta-analysis shows that, following bariatric surgery, 43 to 79% of diabetes, hyperlipidemia and hypertension in patients resolved to normal levels or no longer required therapy. However, bariatric surgery side effects have implications for oral health, including nutrient deficiencies impacting healing of oral tissues and gastroesophageal reflux, resulting in tooth erosion. Patients who have undergone bariatric surgery are seen with increasing frequency…

Full-mouth rehabilitation of a patient with gastroesophageal reflux disease: a clinical report.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition caused by stomach acid regurgitating into the esophagus or oral cavity, often causing heartburn. Tooth erosion and wear are common oral manifestations of GERD. This clinical report describes the full-mouth rehabilitation of a patient with over 30 years of GERD, causing wear of maxillary and mandibular anterior teeth, along with complications associated with past restorations. Full-mouth rehabilitation of natural teeth in conjunction with dental implants was selected as the treatment option. Ideal occlusal design and optimal esthetic…

Effect of time on the remineralisation of enamel by synthetic saliva after citric acid erosion.

The aim of this in vitro study was to determine the influence of remineralisation time on rehardening of surface-softened enamel after citric acid erosion. Seven groups of 13 samples of human enamel were eroded in 0.3% citric acid at pH 3.2 for 2 h followed by profilometric measurements. Individual groups of specimens were placed in artificial saliva for 1, 2, 4, 6, 9 or 24 h. A control group was placed in isotonic saline for 24 h. After new profilometric measurements samples were ultrasonicated stepwise up to 480 s with profilometric measurements performed at 5, 30, 120, 240 and 480 s to meas

Adhesive interface between resin and etched dentin of cervical erosion/abrasion lesions.

The interfacial structure between an adhesive composite resin and the dentinal walls of cervical erosion/abrasion lesions etched with 37% phosphoric acid gel for 60 seconds was investigated. Almost all dentinal tubules were occluded with rod-like structural depositions that remained undissolved even after acid conditioning. The hybrid layer between the adhesive resin and surface-demineralized dentin was found to be 0.3 to 3 microns, much thinner than that routinely found in either normal dentin or cariously affected dentin. The hybrid layer was thinnest at the occlusal walls of the cavity wher
