Gingival recession in 15-year old pupils.

In a clinical examination of 174 15-year old pupils approximately 62 per cent showed some degree of gingival recession on the labial surfaces of maxillary teeth. The number of affected teeth per individual was low, one tooth in about 35 per cent and teeth in 25 per cent of the individuals. First molars and first premolars were the teeth most often affected. The majority of the defects were not extensive, i.e. the gingival margin was situated at the cemento-enamel junction. The number of cases affected by recession was lower in individuals using an "unspecific" toothbrushing technique compared …

Periodontal disease and diet in domestic pets.

Periodontal disease is the most common oral condition seen in domestic pets. In addition to the discomfort caused in the affected animal, th … the accumulation of dental deposits and consequently on disease development and progression. Daily toothbrushing remains the single most effective means of removing plaque, thus preventing periodontal disease. On the basis of current knowledge, the best way to maintain healthy periodontal tissues in our pets is frequent toothbrushing. The use of a dental hygie …

Tooth brushing versus routine oral care impact on ventilator-associated pneumonia in PICU: a clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a frequent and serious infection among mechanically ventilated children in pediatric intensive care units (PICUs), with oral colonization playing a key role in its pathogenesis. Effective oral hygiene measures are therefore crucial to reduce VAP incidence and improve clinical outcomes. This study aimed to compare the incidence of VAP in PICU patients receiving routine oral care versus toothbrushing with chlorhexidine, and to evaluate the impact on mechanical ventilation duration, PICU stay, and mortality with secondary outcomes including mic…

Risk of gastrointestinal illness due to Campylobacter exposure in urban waterways for unsheltered persons experiencing homelessness.

As the population of persons experiencing homelessness (PEHs) continues to grow in urban areas, including Las Vegas in Southern Nevada, it b … antitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA), we evaluated three exposure scenarios: direct bathing, toothbrushing, and hand-to-mouth contact following hand submersion. The median probability of illness for a single toothbrushing (5 %) or bathing event (5 %) exceeded the adopted risk threshold of 3.2 %, with estimated median annual risks reaching 36 % under mont …

Age-stratified associations of oral hygiene care with dental caries and periodontitis: cross-sectional analysis of seventh Korea national health and nutrition examination survey.

OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study aimed to demonstrate the association between oral hygiene care behaviors specifically toothbrushing frequency (TBF), interproximal cleaning, and electric toothbrush use and tooth caries or periodontitis, stratified by age. METHODS: Representative data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey during 2016-2018 (KNHANES VII) was used to evaluate the association between oral hygiene behaviors and tooth caries or periodontitis as stratified by three age groups (14 or 20-39 years, 40-59 years, and 60 years or over). Caries and periodonti…

Oral prophylactic procedures and gingival health among Nigerian school children.

Various researchers have advocated the use of chewing sticks in community oral health programmes because they are readily available, cheaper than the toothbrush and paste, and are found to possess antiplaque properties. Oral health education is essential for enlightenment on good oral health maintenance. The study was thus aimed at educating children on how to maintain a good oral health (including the efficient use of various oral hygiene implements) and noting the impact on their gingival health. 120 school children with no gingival disease, aged 12 to 14 years, participated in the study. CONCLUSIONS: Adjunctive devices significantly improve interproximal plaque control compared to toothbrushing alone. Under the conditions of this experimental model, the combinations that included string floss demonstrated the highest efficacy for physical plaque removal. How to deal with morning bad breath: A randomized, crossover clinical trial.

CONTEXT: The absence of a protocol for the treatment of halitosis has led us to compare mouthrinses with mechanical oral hygiene procedures for treating morning breath by employing a hand-held sulfide monitor. AIMS: To compare the efficacy of five modalities of treatment for controlling morning halitosis in subjects with no dental or periodontal disease. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: This is a five-period, randomized, crossover clinical trial. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty volunteers were randomly assigned to the trial. Testing involved the use of a conventional tongue scraper, a tongue scraper join

Prevention and therapeutic approaches to gingival inflammation.

The most important preventive and therapeutic effort to reduce inflammation is to remove the dental plaque thoroughly. Oral self-care is thus of crucial importance to achieve and maintain oral health. There is a scarcity of scientific evidence on the most effective models for behavioural change aimed to improve oral hygiene. There is a need for randomized-controlled trials, based on behavioural sciences and performed with great methodological rigour, to investigate the usefulness of these proposed behavioural changes. Oral hygiene regimens for patients with natural teeth as well as dental impl

Effectiveness of CPP-ACP and fluoridated toothpastes in preserving enamel microhardness after erosion and abrasion challenges at different time intervals.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of fluoridated (1450 ppm F⁻) and CPP-ACP (MI Paste) toothpastes applied after different time points following erosive-abrasive challenge on the perseverance of enamel hardness.  MATERIALS AND METHODS:  Enamel specimens were subjected to an erosive-abrasive model using erosive beverage and toothbrushing simulation. The erosive challenge was achieved by soaking the specimens in Coca-Cola for 2 min. Distilled water was used as a control. Then, the specimens were subjected to brushing using fluoridated and CPP-ACP dentifrices applied via a brushing simulation …

Exploring and enhancing the accessibility of children's oral health resources (called HABIT) for high risk communities.

BACKGROUND: Within the city of Bradford in West Yorkshire, South Asian and Eastern European communities have an increased risk of childhood tooth decay, especially among families with Limited English Proficiency. Tooth decay is preventable, with national guidelines advocating home-based behaviours (toothbrushing with fluoride toothpaste and reducing sugar intake). In England, Health Visitors have opportunities to undertake oral health conversations during universal visits for children aged 0-24 months. The HABIT (Health visitors delivering Advice in Britain on Infant Toothbrushing) interventio…

Determinants of self-assessed gingival health among adolescents.

The purpose of the present cross-sectional study was to assess the extent of agreement between clinical and self-assessed gingival health and to investigate possible factors associated with the amount of self-assessed gingival bleeding. A study group comprising students enrolled in grade 7 or 8 in Helsinki, Finland (n = 172), performed a self-assessment based on two tests: the amount of bleeding after toothbrushing and after interproximal tooth cleaning with toothpicks. Clinical examinations based on bleeding on probing (BOP%) were carried out by four local community dentists. The highest obse…

A Theory-Based Digital Intervention to Improve Maternal Oral Health Behaviors for Young Children: Quasi-Experimental Study.

Oral and hand hygiene practices among adolescents aged 12-17 years in 72 countries: a cross-sectional study using global school-based student health survey data (2010-2019).

BACKGROUND: Oral and hand hygiene constitute fundamental determinants of adolescent health. However, globally comparable estimates of these behaviours remain limited. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of toothbrushing and handwashing practices among adolescents aged 12-17 years and to quantify disparities by sex, age, geographical region, and national income level. METHODS: We used nationally representative data from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) collected between 2010 and 2019, covering 244,040 adolescents from 72 countries. Toothbrushing frequency was categorised as…
