Although small retinal bleeding has been evaluated as a complication of filtering surgery, long-standing retinal bleeding is rare. We report 3 rare cases of young patients with massive retinal hemorrhages following trabeculectomy with 5-fluorouracil or mitomycin C. The effect of injecting sodium hyaluronate (Healon) before fistulization in trabeculectomy was investigated in a prospective, randomized study of 107 consecutive eyes. 27 patients (52 eyes) with congenital glaucoma, aged 45 days to 6 years, were performed external route trabeculotomy in combination with trabeculectomy. In the follow-up of 23 patients (45 eyes) for 4 to 48 months, the IOP was controlled in 93.4%. The operation was safe with little complication.
