We report a case of Fasciola hepatica liver abscesses in a 67-year-old female returning from a trip to Vietnam. She has been suffering from a fever, right abdominal pain for 4 days, and major eosinophilia. Radiologic investigations showed multiple hypodense confluent abscesses in the right lobe of the liver, complicated by occlusive thrombosis of the right branch of the portal vein. The serological investigation of helminth-elicited eosinophilia showed only a positive serology for F. hepatica. Despite repeated negative stool examinations for any intestinal pathogen, the diagnosis was establish

Fascioliasis is a zoonotic disease that can sometimes affect humans. It presents with non-specific signs and symptoms which makes it difficult to establish an early definitive diagnosis. This can be particularly true in non-endemic countries where a high degree of suspicion is needed to make the diagnosis. Another confounding factor is that many of the initial complains and findings are very similar to those of malignancy. We report a case of an otherwise healthy 47 year-old male presenting with abdominal pain, night-time sweating, anorexia, weight loss and loose stools that had several hepati

Two separate field trials involving naturally infected cattle were carried out on two farms known to have a history of Fasciola hepatica infection. On the first farm, 15 animals per group were allocated as follows: G1, triclabendazole (TCBZ) four times a year; G2, TCBZ twice a year (May and September); G3, untreated control. All groups grazed together and after 3.5 years the animals were slaughtered and their livers examined by federal meat inspectors who condemned 100% of livers in G3 and 8.3% in G2 owing to the presence of lesions of fasciolosis. In G1 no livers were condemned. Significant d…

A new case of human infection due to Fasciola hepatica is reported in the Venezuelan parasitological literature. The patient is an 81-year-old female asymptomatic, with an eosinophilia of 21% and critrosedimentation rate of 26 mm/h and was found during a routine check up. These values were normal at the time of treatment (4 months later), as were several tests of hepatic function, blood chemistry and peripheral blood haematological values. The number of eggs of the parasite were between 90 and 130/g of facees. The patient was successfully treated with the human formulation of trielabendazole a

Fasciola hepatica is highly prevalent in the highlands of Peru. School-age children have the greatest risk of infection. Mass treatment of at-risk populations has been proposed to control the infection and prevent complications. However, the decreasing effectiveness of triclabendazole raises concerns regarding this strategy. Previous studies reported aggregation of Fasciola infection among family members. This study aimed to determine the risk of fascioliasis among household members living with Fasciola-infected children identified through school-based testing. We conducted a cross-sectional s…

BACKGROUND: Fasciola hepatica (F. hepatica) (liver fluke) is a parasitic trematode that infects humans through the consumption of contaminat … dy of literature on F. hepatica infection to facilitate timely diagnosis and empiric treatment with triclabendazole or nitazoxanide, as these are effective and reduce unnecessary interventions.

PURPOSE: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the computed tomography (CT) findings of Fasciola hepatica infestations on initial and follow-up imagings after treatment, and also to describe the role of CT during diagnosis.
METHODS: In this retrospective study, patients with a diagnosis of fascioliasis by clinical and laboratory examination who underwent initial and follow-up contrast-enhanced abdominal CT scans after treatment (a single oral dose of 10mg/kg Triclabendazole) were included. The CT scans were evaluated regarding liver and spleen sizes, portal and splenic vein diameters, involved …

Liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) infection is an increasing threat to livestock production resulting in serious economic losses to the beef, dairy and sheep industries in Australia and globally. Triclabendazole (TCBZ) is the main drug used to control liver fluke infections in Australia and the widespread emergence of TCBZ resistance in cattle and sheep threatens liver fluke control. Alternative control measures to lower exposure of livestock to fluke infection would be useful to help preserve the usefulness of current chemical flukicides. Environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling methodology and associ…

Fasciola hepatica is a trematode parasite that causes fasciolosis in animals and humans. Fasciolosis is usually treated with triclabendazole, although drug-resistant parasites have been described in several geographical locations. An alternative to drug treatment would be the use of a vaccine, although vaccination studies that have been performed mainly in ruminants over the last 30 years, show high variability in the achieved protection and are not yet ready for commercialisation. Since F. hepatica exhibits a high degree of genomic polymorphism, variation in vaccine efficacy could be attribut…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Fasciola hepatica is a rare zoonotic parasite that infects the liver of many mammals including humans. The aim of this stud … atica was performed on the blood samples from all patients. Seropositive patients were treated with triclabendazole.
RESULTS: F. hepatica was detected by ELISA in 89 (5.6%) of the 1,600 patients, but eggs were identified on the stool examination in only 29 (1.8%) patients. The prevalence of F. hepatica was higher in females (7.2%) than in males (4.2%) and was hi …

Helminth infections, caused by cestodes, nematodes, and trematodes, continue to be a major constraint on animal health, livestock productivity, and global parasite control. While conventional anthelmintics such as benzimidazoles, macrocyclic lactones, levamisole, praziquantel, and triclabendazole are highly effective, their extensive use has driven resistance development, revealed stage-specific efficacy limitations, and raised concerns regarding environmental residues. These limitations have renewed interest in plant-derived anthelmintic agents as potential pharmacological leads and complemen…
