Distribution of Fos-Like Immunoreactivity, Catecholaminergic and Serotoninergic Neurons Activated by the Laryngeal Chemoreflex in the Medulla Oblongata of Rats.

The laryngeal chemoreflex (LCR) induces apnea, glottis closure, bradycardia and hypertension in young and maturing mammals. We examined the distribution of medullary nuclei that are activated by the LCR and used immunofluorescent detection of Fos protein as a cellular marker for neuronal activation to establish that the medullary catecholaminergic and serotoninergic neurons participate in the modulation of the LCR. The LCR was elicited by the infusion of KCl-HCl solution into the laryngeal lumen of adult rats in the experimental group, whereas the control group received the same surgery but no

High-resolution fMRI detects neuromodulation of individual brainstem nuclei by electrical tongue stimulation in balance-impaired individuals.

High-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) can be used to precisely identify blood oxygen level dependent (BOLD) activation of small structures within the brainstem not accessible with standard fMRI. A previous study identified a region within the pons exhibiting sustained neuromodulation due to electrical tongue stimulation, but was unable to precisely identify the neuronal structure involved. For this study, high-resolution images of neural activity induced by optic flow were acquired in nine healthy controls and nine individuals with balance dysfunction before and after in

Differential expression of GABAA and glycine receptors in ALS-resistant vs. ALS-vulnerable motoneurons: possible implications for selective vulnerability of motoneurons.

Summary Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating motoneuronal degenerative disease, which is inevitably fatal in adults. ALS is characterized by an extensive loss of motoneurons in the cerebrospinal axis, except for those motoneurons that control eye movements and bladder contraction. The reason for this selectivity is not known. Systematic differences have been found in the organization of excitatory synaptic transmission in ALS-resistant vs. ALS-susceptible motor nuclei. However, although motoneurons express high levels of glycine receptors (GlyR) and GABA(A) receptors (GABA(A)R)

Topographic organization of descending projection neurons to the spinal cord of the goldfish, Carassius auratus.

Several neurons from different nuclei give rise to descending spinal tracts and project to various levels in the spinal cord of goldfish, Carassius auratus. These were visualized by retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) administered to the bilaterally transected spinal cord at 6 levels, corresponding to 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th and 25th segments of the vertebral column. As many as 16 brain nuclei or neuronal aggregations and the Mauthner cells project posteriorly up to the 20th spinal segment. Restricted neurons of the dorsolateral area in the nucleus preopticus magnocellulari

Nitric oxide synthase activation in nTS is essential to NMDA receptor dependent encoding of the cough reflex.

Polymodal vagal afferent nerves terminating in the mucosa of the large conducting airways play essential roles in regulating cough. These cough receptors project bilaterally from the nodose ganglia, are activated by protons and by mechanical stimulation, and terminate centrally in the medial (SolM) solitary tract nuclei (nTS). Although many vagal afferent nerves utilize non-NMDA type glutamate receptors exclusively for transmission centrally, cough receptor signaling requires NMDA receptor activation. We hypothesized that nTS nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activation and a cGMP transduction casca

White matter volume loss drives cortical reshaping after thalamic infarcts.

OBJECTIVE: The integration of somatosensory, ocular motor and vestibular signals is necessary for self-location in space and goal-directed action. We aimed to detect remote changes in the cerebral cortex after thalamic infarcts to reveal the thalamo-cortical connections necessary for multisensory processing and ocular motor control. METHODS: Thirteen patients with unilateral ischemic thalamic infarcts presenting with vestibular, somatosensory, and ocular motor symptoms were examined longitudinally in the acute phase and after six months. Voxel- and surface-based morphometry were used to detec

Activation of the VpdmVGLUT1-VPM pathway contributes to anxiety-like behaviors induced by malocclusion.

Occlusal disharmony has a negative impact on emotion. The mesencephalic trigeminal nucleus (Vme) neurons are the primary afferent nuclei that convey proprioceptive information from proprioceptors and low-threshold mechanoreceptors in the periodontal ligament and jaw muscles in the cranio-oro-facial regions. The dorsomedial part of the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus (Vpdm) and the ventral posteromedial nucleus (VPM) of thalamus have been proven to be crucial relay stations in ascending pathway of proprioception. The VPM sends numerous projections to primary somatosensory areas (SI), which

Neural Pathways of Craniofacial Muscle Pain: Implications for Novel Treatments.

Craniofacial muscle pain is highly prevalent in temporomandibular disorders but is difficult to treat. Enhanced understanding of neurobiology unique to craniofacial muscle pain should lead to the development of novel mechanism-based treatments. Herein, we review recent studies to summarize neural pathways of craniofacial muscle pain. Nociceptive afferents in craniofacial muscles are predominantly peptidergic afferents enriched with TRPV1. Signals from peripheral glutamate receptors converge onto TRPV1, leading to mechanical hyperalgesia. Further studies are needed to clarify whether hyperalges

Mapping of mitochondrial ferritin in the brainstem of Macaca fascicularis.

Mitochondrial ferritin (FtMt), a recently-studied iron storage protein, which we suspect is an important defense against oxidative stress in neurons and elsewhere. The 242-amino acid FtMt precursor protein is cleaved to mature protein (of molecular weight about 22-kDa) in the mitochondrial matrix. Compared with the ubiquitously expressed traditional ferritin (H-ferritin and L-ferritin), FtMt has been found in fewer locations including the testis, heart and brain. Previous studies have reported that the expression of FtMt in mouse and human brain is predominantly localized to neurons and partly

Emetic reflex arc revealed by expression of the immediate-early gene c-fos in the cat.

The organization of the central neuronal circuitry that produces vomiting was explored by mapping the distribution of c-fos protein (Fos)-like immunoreactivity (FLI) as a monitor of functional activity. The brainstem and spinal cord were examined in cats administered multiple emetic drugs (cisplatin, lobeline, protoveratrine, naloxone, apomorphine) or control saline injections. Some animals were decerebrated, paralyzed, and artificially ventilated to avoid possible Fos expression induced by sensory feedback or fluid depletion during vomiting. Fictive vomiting was identified in these animals by

Neural Mechanisms and Brain Alterations in Orofacial Pain: A Narrative Review of Human Neuroimaging.

Orofacial pain is a complex and multifactorial condition that affects quality of life and presents important diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Advances in neuroimaging techniques have enabled the investigation of nervous system alterations associated with pain perception and modulation. This review synthesizes current evidence on structural, functional, and neurochemical brain alterations identified through magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in individuals with acute and chronic orofacial pain conditions. A comprehensive literature search of PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus identified MRI

[Function-controlled neurosurgery. Neurophysiologic and neuropsychological monitoring during surgery of the nervous system].

Neuromonitoring of neural structures has become increasingly common during surgery near cortical areas representing sensorimotor and language function (epilepsia, tumors), in the brain stem and the spinal cord (tumors), near cranial nerves (cerebellopontine angle tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm), and in the cauda equina (tumors, tethered spinal cord). The technical spectrum to monitor these operations includes electrical cortical stimulation to evoke sensorimotor phenomena and language disturbances, electroneurography and -myography of the cauda equina, motor cranial nerves and

T reticular interneurons: a class of serially repeating cells in the zebrafish hindbrain.

We describe a class of reticular neurons, named T interneurons after the branching pattern of their axons, in young larvae of the zebrafish Brachydanio rerio. The cells were identified by filling them with HRP from application sites within the CNS. A serially repeating set of about ten such neurons is present in a longitudinal column on each side of the caudal hindbrain. The T axons project across the midline, and branches course both rostrally and caudally within the medial longitudinal fascicle (mlf). The cells receive synaptic input from the Mauthner neurons, from unidentified axons in the

Impaired trigeminal nociceptive processing in patients with trigeminal neuralgia.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia (TN) usually leads to paroxysms of short lasting but very severe pain. Between the attacks the patient is usually asymptomatic, but a constant dull background pain may persist in some cases. The mechanisms associated with the development of this chronic pain are not well understood. OBJECTIVE: To determine trigeminal nociceptive fiber impairment in patients with TN comparing symptomatic and nonsymptomatic sides using the nociceptive blink reflex (nBR) and pain-related evoked potentials (PREP) and to identify possible central mechanisms of pain chronicity. A case of intractable facial pain secondary to metastatic lung cancer.

Persistent idiopathic facial pain, once called atypical facial pain, rarely anticipates the detection of a lung carcinoma. Thirty-six cases of intractable facial pain secondary to lung neoplasm are described in the literature. The onset of facial pain usually precedes the onset of symptoms and signs due to lung cancer by several months and therefore it should be considered, when present, as a possible marker for an early diagnosis of tumour. We report a case of intractable facial pain associated with metastatic lung cancer in a non-smoker.

Comparative study of the neuronal plasticity along the neuraxis of the vibrissal sensory system of adult rat following unilateral infraorbital nerve damage and subsequent regeneration.

The aim of the present study was to examine the physiological consequences of a unilateral infraorbital nerve lesion and its regeneration at different levels of the somatosensory neuraxis. In animals whose right infraorbital nerve had been crushed, a large unresponsive area was found in the main brainstem trigeminal nucleus (Pr5). Responses evoked by ipsilateral vibrissal deflection in the middle of Pr5 reappeared only on days 22-35 after the nerve had been transected, whereas recovery from the nerve crush took only 7-9 days. However, no sign of short-term neuronal plasticity was observed in P

Activation of microglial GLP-1R in the trigeminal nucleus caudalis suppresses central sensitization of chronic migraine after recurrent nitroglycerin stimulation.

BACKGROUND: Central sensitization is considered a critical pathogenic mechanism of chronic migraine (CM). Activation of microglia in the trigeminal nucleus caudalis (TNC) contributes to this progression. Microglial glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) activation can alleviate pain; however, whether it is involved in the mechanism of CM has not been determined. Thus, this study aims to investigate the precise role of GLP-1R in the central sensitization of CM. METHODS: Repeated nitroglycerin injection-treated mice were used as a CM animal model in the experiment. To identify the distributi

Possible neural network mediating jaw opening during prey-catching behavior of the frog.

The prey-catching behavior of the frog is a complex, well-timed sequence of stimulus response chain of movements. After visual analysis of the prey, a size dependent program is selected in the motor pattern generator of the brainstem. Besides this predetermined feeding program, various direct and indirect sensory inputs provide flexible adjustment for the optimal contraction of the executive muscles. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether trigeminal primary afferents establish direct contacts with the jaw opening motoneurons innervated by the facial nerve. The experiments were
