OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to analyze the functional results of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) range; that is, trismus index, lateral excursion, protrusion, retrusion, occlusion, masticatory efficiency), reestablishment of the anatomic relationship of the TMJ, aesthetics to improve quality of life, and complications in terms of ramus shortening on the affected side, deviation, facial asymmetry, neurologic deficits, and reankylosis.

Patients undergoing radiotherapy for head and neck cancers are prone to a range of dental complications, including mucositis, trismus, xerostomia, radiation caries and osteoradionecrosis. Specific considerations include the preventive, restorative and rehabilitative management of such patients, and the prevention and treatment of complications. This article aims to highlight the current understanding and management of dental needs for patients who have had or will undergo radiotherapy.

Masseter hypertrophy is a rare condition. It is mostly idiopathic with no known cause. It is recognized as an enlargement of one or both masseter muscles. Most patients complain of facial asymmetry; however, symptoms such as trismus, protrusion, and bruxism may also occur. This article reports a case of bilateral masseter hypertrophy with retrognathic mandible in which comprehensive treatment was rendered to the patient by using a combination approach.

A case of eosinophilic myositis of the masseter associated with pseudotumor and trismus is presented. Extensive eosinophilic infiltrates of the masseter are rarely observed in the absence of parasitic infection or the hypereosinophilic syndrome. This case is reported because of the rarity of the phenomenon and its importance to the surgeon from the standpoint of differential diagnosis and treatment. The pathogenesis of the condition and its relation to other lesions of muscle associated with eosinophilic infiltration are discussed.

A case of difficult intubation in a patient with Apert syndrome, who had recently undergone bilateral internal midface distraction, is described. The 14-year-old boy had no antecedent history of such difficulty, despite numerous previous anaesthetics. We suggest that trismus due to temporalis muscle fibrosis, and the altered relationships of the maxilla and mandible following midface advancement, were causal.

Trigeminal involvement in syringomyelia or in a malformation of the occipito-vertebral junction may rarely be the presenting feature of the disorder. Two cases are reported: in the first, recurrent pruritus of the side of the nose due to sensory involvement of CN V was the presenting feature of syringomyelia; in the second, a malformation of the occipito-vertebral junction presented with refractory and painful trismus by irritation of the motor part of the trigeminal nerve.

A six-year-old girl presented with fever, trismus and a very tender, enlarged submandibular mass. CT-scanning showed a right parapharyngeal mass and enlarged cervical nodes in the posterior triangle. Surgical exploration of the area failed to reveal an abscess. Subsequently the clinical criteria for the diagnosis of Kawasaki syndrome were met. This unusual presentation is compared with previously reported cases in the literature.

Pseudoaneurysm of the internal carotid artery (PAICA) is a rare complication of neck space infection. An 8-year-old girl presented with odynophagia (painful swallowing), trismus and left peritonsillar swelling. Abscess was suspected, but aspiration was dry. The PAICA was diagnosed on computed tomography. The aneurysm and involved left internal carotid artery were occluded endovascularly. She has made an uneventful recovery.
