The international journal of tuberculosis and lung disease : the official journal of the International Union against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease2003eng
SETTING: The public health tuberculosis control program covering Seattle, Washington, and its surrounding suburban areas.
OBJECTIVE: To describe a tool of potential usefulness in the assessment of transmission of tuberculosis in contact investigations of groups, such as co-workers or schoolmates of an infectious case, with a low prior probability of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI).
DESIGN: Tuberculin skin test (TST) readings in mm of the group being tested were graphed and compared with the known frequency distributions of TST readings of populations with and without LTBI, the latter in

Twenty-three of 103 adult rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) entering NIH holding facilities with no history of measles vaccination or infection, no titer to rubeola virus, a minimum of four negative results of intrapalpebral tuberculosis tests, and negative for Herpesvirus simiae and type D retroviruses were selected to evaluate the adequacy of commonly used quarantine/conditioning protocol procedures. One month after sensitization by subcutaneous inoculation with 100 mg of killed Mycobacterium tuberculosis in oil, an intrapalpebral tuberculosis test was administered in the right eyelid. All an

We studied the prevalence of tuberculin reactivity and anergy in 360 elderly patients residing in two municipal chronic disease hospitals. Eighty-five (26%) of the 323 patients tested had a positive reaction to a stage 1 tuberculin test and 12 (6%) of the 207 stage 1 tuberculin-negative patients exhibited a booster response to a stage 2 tuberculin test. Thirty percent of the same 207 patients had no response to an anergy panel of skin test antigens that included candida, mumps, and trichophyton. Nonresponders to tuberculin and the anergy panel had significantly higher one-year mortality rates …

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We investigated the agreement between the QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-Gold) test and the tuberculin skin test (TST) in the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), compared with healthy controls, in Korea.
METHODS: We recruited 64 patients with RA and 79 healthy controls at two university hospitals in South Korea. The participants underwent both the QFT-Gold test and the TST simultaneously between August 2006 and February 2009. All patients were diagnosed using the classification criteria for RA revised in 1987 by the American Colleg

BACKGROUND: HIV-infected children are at high risk of developing tuberculosis after infection by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Emphasis is placed on tuberculin skin testing (TST) for diagnosing tuberculosis in children; however, its value in HIV-infected children is controversial.
OBJECTIVES: To determine whether concurrent antigen testing and/or CD4+ lymphocyte counts help in the interpretation of the TST in children with tuberculosis.
METHODS: Children eligible for the study were diagnosed as having tuberculosis on clinical criteria. CD4+ lymphocyte counts and delayed-type hypersensitivity (

Current WHO-recommended diagnostic tools for tuberculosis infection (TBI) have well-known limitations and viable alternatives are urgently needed. We compared the diagnostic performance and accuracy of the novel QIAreach QuantiFERON-TB assay (QIAreach; index) to the QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus assay (QFT-Plus; reference). The sample included 261 adults (≥ 18 years) recruited at community-based TB case finding events. Of these, 226 underwent Tuberculin Skin Tests and 200 returned for interpretation (TST; comparator). QIAreach processing and TST reading were completed at lower-level healthcare faci

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: To compare tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon gamma release assay (IGRA) in the screening of LTBI among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in an endemic area for tuberculosis, to evaluate the need for repeating tests during anti-TNFα, therapy, and to check whether the results may be affected by immunosuppression.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study of 110 IBD patients and 64 controls was conducted in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The TST was administered after the Quantiferon(®)-TB Gold In-tube test was performed.
RESULTS: TST and IGRA agreement was poor regard

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon γ release assay are currently used as diagnostic tools to detect latent tuberculosis (TB) infection; however, there are inconsistencies about the degree of agreement between the tests. We aimed to evaluate the concordance rate between the two tests in household contacts of a country with intermediate TB burden, where most people were vaccinated.
METHODS: We recruited household contacts who spent > 8 hours daily with patients with microbiologically confirmed active pulmonary TB, and received both TST and T-SPOT.TB (Oxford Immunotec

AIM: The tuberculin skin test (TST) is used to diagnose tuberculosis; however, the influence of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors on the test is unclear. This study investigated whether therapy with TNF inhibitors suppresses the TST reaction due to immunosuppression or whether the TST reaction increases due to reactivation of latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.
METHOD: Ninety-one patients with rheumatoid arthritis receiving TNF inhibitors (40 using infliximab and 51 using etanercept) were studied. The TST was performed before starting TNF inhibitors (T1) and more than 1 year aft

Results of tuberculin skin test (TST) surveys among different populations have been reported in many studies as a method for detecting primary Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection. Combining these results provides reliable estimates of primary latent tuberculosis (TB) infection for health policymakers. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of latent TB infection in general and high-risk populations in Iran. National and international databanks were searched using specific keywords. After restricting the search strategy, duplicates exclusion, reviewing titles, abstracts and full texts, and

BACKGROUND: Patients with prior positive tuberculin skin test (TST) results may benefit from prophylaxis after repeat exposure to infectious tuberculosis (TB).
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate factors associated with active TB disease among persons with prior positive TST results named as contacts of persons with infectious TB.
DESIGN: Population-based retrospective cohort study.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 2,933 contacts with prior positive TST results recently exposed to infectious TB identified in New York City's TB registry during the period from January 1, 1997 through December 31, 2003.

Tuberculosis morbidity rates in Poland have been gradually decreasing. Nevertheless, there are approximately 8 thousand cases being registered annually, which includes almost 3 thousand massively infectious patients. In the last 3 years, around 100 cases/year have been reported among children below 14 years of age. Infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis should be considered in all patients who present symptoms suggesting tuberculosis, have had recent contact with a person suffering from lung tuberculosis or are planned to undergo an immunosuppressive treatment. HIV infected patients are als

SETTING: A 950 bed teaching hospital in Switzerland.
AIM: To describe the result of a contact investigation among health care workers (HCW) and patients after exposure to a physician with smear-positive pulmonary tuberculosis in a hospital setting using standard tuberculin skin tests (TST) and Interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA).
METHOD: HCW with a negative or unknown TST at hiring had a TST two weeks after the last contact with the index case (T0), repeated six weeks later if negative (T6). All exposed HCW had a T-SPOT.TB at T0 and T6. Exposed patients had a TST six weeks after the last c

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether Interferon-γ release assays (IGRAs) reduce the number of people considered for tuberculosis (TB) preventive treatment without increasing subsequent active disease.
METHODS: Longitudinal studies with both tuberculin skin test (TST) and IGRAs were identified through a PubMed search. Reductions in diagnosis of TB infection and increases in incident TB in people considered not infected, using IGRAs either instead of TST or as a confirmatory test (two-step approach), were assessed.
RESULTS: In comparison with TST alone, the pooled reductions in diagnosis of TB infect

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: We undertook this study to compare the performance of tuberculin skin test (TST) and QuantiFERON-TB-Gold In-tube assay (QFT-IT) to identify latent TB infection (LTBI) among close contacts of pulmonary TB cases.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in north central Mexico. Thirty nine TB index cases diagnosed between 2008 and 2010 and 123 corresponding close contacts were interviewed regarding their exposure time to the index case prior to TB diagnosis and relevant sociodemographic factors. TST (induration ≥5 and ≥10 mm) and QFT-IT (≥0.35 IU/mL) were tested to de

There is paucity of data on the usefulness of Interferon (IFN)-γ release assays in the diagnosis of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in children. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concordance between tuberculin skin test (TST) and QuantiFERON®-TB Gold in-tube (QFT-GIT) test, when used in contact screening to diagnose LTBI in asymptomatic children. We also aimed to determine if there is any correlation between age and the IFN-γ response to the mitogen. Children assessed at Leicester Royal Infirmary and Glenfield hospital (Leicester, United Kingdom) as part of tuberculosis contact sc

We aimed to evaluate tuberculin skin test (TST) and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) test results for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in patients with rheumatologic diseases prior to anti-TNFα therapy. Ninety patients were evaluated in the study at the Departments of Chest Diseases and Rheumatology for anti-TNFα therapy for their rheumatologic diseases. Tuberculin skin test was performed (Mantoux method) and peripheral blood samples were collected for IFN-γ assay (QuantiFeron TB-Gold In Tube) before the anti-TNFα therapy. Of 90 patients, TST positivity was detected in 56 (62.2%) patients, while I
