RATIONALE: The standard drugs used to treat tuberculosis are rifampicin and isoniazid. These agents are usually safe and inexpensive for short-term use in treatment of latent tuberculosis infection, but sometimes cause adverse renal effects, including minimal change disease (MCD).
PATIENT CONCERNS: Here, we report a 51-year-old woman with latent tuberculosis infection who developed nephrotic syndrome during treatment with rifampicin and isoniazid for 25 days.
DIAGNOSES: Renal biopsy findings were compatible with MCD, and she had no relevant medical history and was not taking other medication

Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of tuberculosis in animals, has a broad host range, including humans. Historically, public health concerns prompted programs to eradicate tuberculosis from cattle in many nations. Eradication efforts decreased the prevalence of bovine tuberculosis; nevertheless, some countries encountered significant obstacles, not least of which was a wildlife reservoir of M. bovis. Efforts to decrease the size of the affected wildlife populations have neither eliminated disease nor eliminated transmission to cattle. Consequently, the use of a vaccine for wildlife is b

Peliosis hepatis, a condition characterized by the presence of blood-filled lacunar spaces in the liver, has been described primarily in patients on androgenic steroid medication and patients with tuberculosis. It has never been reported as a complication of the use of oral contraceptives, except in association with and localized in contraceptive-induced hepatic tumors. The present report concerns a 43-yr-old woman with generalized peliosis hepatis that developed during long-term use of oral contraceptives. Extensive examination did not reveal a hepatic tumor. Liver cirrhosis and portal hypert

BACKGROUND: Studies have demonstrated a link between tuberculosis and hypercoagulable state, with reported rates of 0,6%-10% venous thromboembolism (VTE) in all adults with tuberculosis. The present study aimed to evaluate the current incidence and characteristics of VTE in a large sample of patients with acute tuberculosis.
METHODS: We report a retrospective study about 26 patients who have confirmed tuberculosis complicated with VTE disease.
RESULTS: Sixteen men and ten women were brought together. The mean age was 42.58 years. The thromboembolic complication revealed tuberculosis among 5

Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic and multisystem disorder characterized by recurrent oral and genital ulcers, along with ocular, cutaneous, vascular, gastrointestinal, and neurologic manifestations. The etiology is thought to involve an autoimmune response triggered by infectious or environmental factors in genetically predisposed individuals. Mycobacterium tuberculosis has been proposed as a potential trigger for BD, although this association remains rarely reported. We show a compelling case of a patient with BD diagnostic criteria who subsequently developed mediastinal tuberculous lymphad

Melioidosis caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, an important human pathogen in the tropical regions causes protean and multisystem clinical manifestations. A 50-year-old man on treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis developed a chest wall abscess. With a suspicion of tuberculous cold abscess, pus culture was done and it revealed Burkholderia pseudomallei. He was treated with 10 days of ceftazidime and incision and drainage was done. Wound healed well and he has now completed three months of oral cotrimoxazole eradication therapy and is on follow-up without recurrence. We report this case for th

In an 82-year-old woman, presenting with fever and asthenia, cervical adenopathy was noted. Clinical and radiological investigations were fruitless. Laboratory examinations detected a refractory anemia. The lymph node was excised and showed numerous trichomonads on touch preparations. Histologically, the node showed caseous necrosis and macrophagic reaction. Diagnosis of lymph node infection by Trichomonas tenax was made. Three weeks later, culture of the node showed Mycobacterium tuberculosis and let us conclude co-infection. T tenax is usually regarded as a harmless saprophyte of the oral ca

The aim of the present review is to illustrate the pathogenesis and imaging findings of tuberculosis in specific head and neck regions to avoid pitfalls in diagnosis. It is imperative to be aware of, and provide an early diagnosis for, extra-pulmonary tubercular lesions in the head and neck. A high index of suspicion combined with an appropriate clinical setting serves as an important background to diagnose tubercular lesions in the head and neck region and differentiate them from malignancy and other disease entities. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent irreversible and debilitating com

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the infection of calves with Mycobacterium bovis through oral exposure and transmission of M. bovis from experimentally infected white-tailed deer to uninfected cattle through indirect contact.
ANIMALS: 24 11-month-old, white-tailed deer and 28 6-month-old, crossbred calves.
PROCEDURE: In the oral exposure experiment, doses of 4.3 x 10(6) CFUs (high dose) or 5 x 10(3) CFUs (low dose) of M. bovis were each administered orally to 4 calves; as positive controls, 2 calves received M. bovis (1.7 x 10(5) CFUs) via tonsillar instillation. Calves were euthanatized and exami

Bovine tuberculosis is a zoonotic infectious disease of cattle caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium bovis. In adult cattle, transmission is mainly via the respiratory route, whereas, in young calves, oral infection is also common. Congenital tuberculosis is rare. The purpose of this study was to describe in utero infection of a bovine stillbirth. The fetus was necropsied and tissue samples were processed for histopathology, bacteriology and PCR; a sample of the isolated strain was genotyped using spoligotyping. The whole herd was tuberculin skin tested and the dam's serum was also assessed fo

Granulomatous mastitis is a rare benign condition often seen in young lactating females of reproductive age group. Prepubescent males or elderly women may also be the victim of this infectious disease. Primary infection of the breast may occur through skin abrasions, open wounds or through the lactiferous ducts while secondary spread occurs from an infective focus elsewhere in the body via lymphatic or hematogenous routes. We present a case of breast tuberculosis diagnosed in a 62-year-old man at our institution. The patient presented with a palpable painful mass in the left breast with chroni

Ethambutol is a first-line chemotherapeutic agent, which is commonly used in combination with other drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis. Ethambutol-induced optic neuritis is a serious and rare side effect that is either dose or duration-related and causes progressive painless vision loss, and cecocentral scotomas in the visual field. A rare case of ethambutol-induced optic neuritis was reported in a 52-year-old female who was taking anti-tubercular treatment for pulmonary tuberculosis for five months. She presented with painless diminished vision in both eyes. The patient was diagnosed wit

Tuberculosis remains the leading cause of death by a single infectious agent worldwide, with over 10 million cases annually. Despite global efforts, delayed or missed diagnoses continue to fuel transmission and mortality, particularly in resource-limited settings. This review outlines both the current diagnostic standards - microscopy, culture, and nucleic acid amplification tests - and highlights promising innovations aimed at improving diagnosis of tuberculosis disease. Novel approaches include stool polymerase chain reaction (PCR), CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic r

We present a 16-year-old girl with a history of well-controlled psoriasis, on immunosuppression, who sought evaluation in the emergency department for 4 months of fever, cough and unintentional weight loss. The patient had seen multiple providers who had diagnosed her with community-acquired pneumonia, but she was unimproved after oral antibiotic therapy. On presentation, she was noted to be febrile, tachycardic and chronically ill-appearing. Her chest X-ray showed diffuse opacities and a right upper lobe cavitary lesion concerning for tuberculosis. A subsequent chest CT revealed miliary pulmo

RATIONALE: Tuberculosis preventive therapy (TPT) is essential for global tuberculosis control, yet estimated coverage remains well below global targets. Current World Health Organization (WHO)-recommended regimens require 1-9 months of treatment and are associated with suboptimal completion rates. Long-acting injectable (LAI) formulations offer the potential to improve TPT uptake and completion, with ideal products providing "one-and-done" options via a single administration.
