The case was 71-year-old woman. She was diagnosed as drug sensitive pulmonary tuberculosis (bII3 by the GAKKAI classification) and the chemotherapy with INH, RFP, EB and PZA was started. Two months later back pain and hemiparesis of both lower limbs appeared and it was diagnosed as caries of the 10th thoracic vertebrae. Because she was confined to bed and impossible to eat orally, the parenteral-hyperalimentaiton therapy was started with the central vein catheter. Howerer, nutritional state, pulmonary tuberculosis lesions and caries symptoms deteriorated. Then percutaneous endoscopic gastrosto

A retrospective study of 26 cases was analyzed to review the sometimes unfamiliar clinical appearance and outcome of Pott's disease. Swiss nationals (46%) were older than patients from Mediterranean or developing countries (mean age, 69 versus 29 years). The number of vertebrae initially involved was 2.2. Localization was lumbar in ten cases, thoracic and lumbar in two, and thoracic or cervical in 14. Abscesses were present in 15 (57%) subjects and appeared during treatment in 20% of these cases. They were twice as frequent in non-Swiss patients. Three patients had surgery because of progressi

BACKGROUND: Spinal tuberculosis most commonly affects the thoracic and thoracolumbar spine, whereas lumbosacral involvement is uncommon and may mimic degenerative lumbar spine disorders, often resulting in delayed diagnosis. This study describes the clinical presentation, radiological characteristics, diagnostic challenges, and short-term management outcomes of patients with lumbosacral spinal tuberculosis.
METHODS: A retrospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary care center between November 2024 and April 2025. A total of 52 patients with suspected infective spinal pathology

Conventional diagnostic methods for tuberculous spondylodiscitis (TS) require tissue biopsy, which can delay diagnosis. Immunodiagnostic approaches, including interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs), have shown potential for improving TS diagnosis. Recent advancements have also identified the potential role of mucosal-associated invariant T (MAIT) cells as biomarkers for TB infection. This study aims to evaluate the diagnostic performance of IGRA using the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube test (QFT-GIT) and MAIT cell analysis for diagnosing TS. Sixty-five patients suspected TS were prospectively en

OBJECTIVE: The identification of spinal tuberculosis subphenotypes is an integral component of precision medicine. However, we lack proper study models to identify subphenotypes in patients with spinal tuberculosis. Here we identified possible subphenotypes of spinal tuberculosis and compared their clinical results.
METHODS: A total of 422 patients with spinal tuberculosis who received surgical treatment were enrolled. Clustering analysis was performed using the K-means clustering algorithm and the routinely available clinical data collected from patients within 24 h after admission. Finally,

BACKGROUND: Among common findings in osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures (OVCFs), the intravertebral cleft (IVC) is usually considered a benign lesion. The current study was aimed to present a rare case of vertebral fracture caused by IVC-related spinal tuberculosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 73-year-old female complained of back pain and weakness in lower limbs for 2 weeks. 3 months ago, after a minor trauma, she got back pain without weakness in lower limbs. Initially, she was diagnosed with a L1 compression fracture and accepted conservative treatment. After an asymptomatic period, she

BACKGROUND: Anterior debridement/bone grafting/posterior instrumentation is a common selection for the treatment of lumbar spinal tuberculosis (LST). To date, no study has focused on the prognostic factors for recovery after this surgery.
METHODS: We included 144 patients who experienced anterior debridement/bone grafting/posterior instrumentation for LST. The recovery rate based on the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score was used to assess recovery. The Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression analysis were used to identify the prognostic factors for recovery postoperatively. For the p

Many studies have been published on the characteristics of spinal tuberculosis, but not yet on the risk factors for complications after complete debridement. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors of postoperative complications in patients with thoracolumbar spinal tuberculosis (TB) after complete debridement. The clinical data of patients with thoracolumbar spinal TB after complete debridement admitted to General Hospital of Ningxia Medical University from January 2013 to December 2021 were included in this retrospective study. Patients were included if they had complete clinical da

BACKGROUND Spinal tuberculosis is difficult to diagnose in patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) because of immunosuppression, atypical clinical manifestations, and the limited sensitivity of conventional microbiological assays. Rapid and accurate pathogen identification is essential to distinguish spinal tuberculosis from other causes of vertebral destruction, including metastatic malignancy and bacterial spondylitis. This report aims to illustrate the diagnostic value of capture-based targeted sequencing for detecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis in extrapulmonary infection when r

Spinal tuberculosis (TB), also known as Pott's spine, remains a significant cause of spinal deformity and neurological compromise, particularly in endemic regions. Surgical correction of chronic deformities is associated with significant risks, including spinal cord injury. Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) has become an essential tool to minimize neurological complications. We report a case of an adolescent boy with longstanding thoracolumbar kyphosis due to spinal TB, where IONM identified true positive motor pathway compromise during deformity correction, despite intraoper

BACKGROUND: Indonesia is the world's second-largest contributor to TB patients. According to prevalence by age, the elderly have the most diagnosed TB. In Indonesia, TB spondylitis affects approximately 5% of TB cases and is a common cause of non-traumatic spinal cord injury (NTSCI). Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a growing public health concern, particularly among the elderly, as many of its populations have sarcopenia. Due to the complete absence of voluntary muscle contraction, SCI is followed by a rapid loss of skeletal muscle mass. SCI has several physical, psychological, social, and economi

Spondylodiscitis is a common but potentially serious form of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis. Very few descriptions are known from Tunisia. We have conducted a retrospective study including 60 cases of spinal tuberculosis, performed over a period of 20 years (1996-2016). The diagnosis was retained on bacteriological, radiological and anatomopathologic evidence. Sixty cases including 31 women and 29 men of spinal tuberculosis were involved. The mean age was 54.4 ± 21.3 years. The delay from onset to diagnosis was 6 months (1-14). Lumbar region was the most common infection site (68%). The magnetic

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis (TB) has long been an important cause of destructive lesions of spine in India. However the scenario is fast changing with atypical presentations and increasing reports of non-tubercular conditions. This poses a great diagnostic dilemma.
AIM: The present study is aimed at evaluating the diagnostic efficacy of percutaneous transpedicular needle biopsy and the correlation of the histology with clinico-radiological features.
METHODS: Forty-one patients diagnosed of TB spine by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were revaluated of their clinical presentations, radiologic

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is uncommon but not rare. Bone and joint involvement constitute about 10% of extrapulmonary TB cases, with the spine being the most frequently affected site. Spinal TB patients typically present with back pain but other constitutional or pulmonary symptoms may be absent, rendering the diagnosis difficult. This case explores challenges in the diagnosis of spinal TB. We report a case of a 39-year-old woman presenting with vague back swelling for many years. Imaging revealed osteomyelitis of the spine but initial studies and cultures were negative for Mycobacteriu
