[Ultrasonography in liver echinococcosis (author's transl)].

The presence of daughter cysts within the original cyst is a typical feature of cystic echinococcus disease. Due to this, a reliable (preoperative) diagnosis by ultrasonography alone can be made when demonstrating these daughter cysts - as shown in 2 exemplary cases, verified by serology and histology.

[Lung Ultrasonography in Intensive Care Medicine].

Lung Ultrasound (LUS) has emerged in recent years as an extremely valuable diagnostic and monitoring tool, and as an increasingly standardized procedure in intensive care medicine. It provides rapid, radiation-free, bedside (POCUS: point-of-care ultrasound) diagnostics for thoracic diseases. Pathological Findings: LUS enables the detection of pathological lung findings such as pleural effusion, pneumothorax, consolidations including atelectasis and pneumonic infiltrates, as well as interstitial syndromes in the context of ARDS. In cases presenting with the key symptom of dyspnea, LUS helps to

Anorectal malformation and contrast-enhanced ultrasonography.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography in the diagnosis of anorectal malformations. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In 24 months, 5 patients aged 13 days-22 months were assessed by means of 6 colosonographies (colostograms or contrast-enhanced ultrasound enemas) as a result of suspected rectourethral fistula (3 boys) or rectovestibular fistula (2 girls). An ultrasound device with a dedicated software for contrast visualization, a multifrequency probe, and second-generation ultrasound contrast were employed. The results were confirmed using contrast-enhanced radiology in 4 p…

Lung ultrasonography underdiagnoses clinically significant pneumothorax.

BACKGROUND: Ultrasonography for trauma is an integral part of the Advanced Trauma Life Support algorithm and supported extensively in the literature. The reliability of chest ultrasonography as a screening examination for pneumothorax during initial trauma evaluation is unclear. We performed a prospective study where we hypothesized that chest ultrasonography would have low sensitivity for detecting clinically significant pneumothorax. METHODS: A prospective observational analysis of patients with blunt chest trauma at a level 1 trauma center was performed. Patients included had supine chest …

Intraoperative transfontanelle ultrasonography for pediatric patients.

Cerebral blood flow (CBF) plays a vital role in delivering cerebral oxygen, and the accurate assessment of CBF is crucial for the intraoperative management of critically ill infants. Although the direct measurement of CBF is challenging, CBF velocity (CBFV) can be assessed using transcranial Doppler. Recent advances in point-of-care ultrasound have introduced brain ultrasound as a feasible intraoperative option, in which transfontanelle ultrasonography (TFU) has been applied to measure the CBFV through the anterior fontanelle. However, the intraoperative application of TFU in pediatric patient…

Untreated ALCAPA diagnosed in gestational ultrasonography.

ALCAPA is a rare congenital anomaly that presents with left ventricular (LV) dysfunction and mitral valve regurgitation. The mortality rate is roughly 90% if the intracoronary collateral isn't significantly augmented. Malignant arrhythmias resulting in sudden death are common, affecting nearly 90% of patients with a mean age of 35 years. Especially during pregnancy, untreated ALCAPA can lead to high mortality and complications. Pregnant women with congenital heart disease have high risks for both themselves and their fetuses. Therefore, screening for congenital heart disease is very important

Thoracic UltrasONOgraphy Reporting: The TUONO Study.

Lung ultrasound (LUS) is a validated technique for the prompt diagnosis and bedside monitoring of critically ill patients due to its availability, safety profile, and cost-effectiveness. The aim of this work is to detect similarities and differences among LUS reports performed in ICUs and to provide a common ground for an integrated report form. We collected all LUS reports during an index week in 21 ICUs from the GiViTI network. First, we considered signs, chest areas, and terminology reported. Then, we compared different report structures and categorized them as structured reports (SRs), pro

Pediatric emergency gastrointestinal ultrasonography: pearls & pitfalls.

Ultrasonography is an essential tool in pediatric imaging, particularly in the emergency setting. Although ultrasound is often the favored initial modality for abdominal imaging in children, it is highly operator-dependent and therefore prone to misinterpretation which can lead to false positive or negative exams, or even incorrect diagnoses. Conditions discussed in this series include ileocolic intussusception, hypertrophic pyloric stenosis, appendicitis, and ingested foreign bodies. We will review diagnostic criteria, highlight crucial findings, and illustrate commonly-encountered difficulti…

Ultrasonography in pediatric Budd-Chiari syndrome.

Budd-Chiari syndrome is a vascular pathology of the liver, commonly seen in adults and uncommon in children. Most children with Budd-Chiari syndrome present with ascites, and an etiology is found in only about 50%. Ultrasonography (US) with color Doppler is the main modality used in the diagnosis. US imaging additionally guides radiologic interventions and follow-up after recanalization or shunt procedure. In this pictorial review, we illustrate the findings in pediatric Budd-Chiari syndrome as seen on B-mode and color Doppler US and describe the role of US in guiding percutaneous radiologic i…

Clinical ultrasonography in systemic autoimmune diseases.

Clinical ultrasonography should be considered a complementary examination that can change clinical practice, as well as a tool to add to the medical history. Systemic autoimmune diseases (SAD) can involve numerous structures and organs. Ultrasonography has broad applied utility in detecting complications such as the presence of free intraabdominal, pleural and pericardial fluid in polyserositis, left ventricular systolic dysfunction in myocarditis and deep vein thrombosis in antiphospholipid syndrome. Specifically for SAD, ultrasonography helps examine the salivary glands in Sjögren's syndrome…

Endoscopic ultrasonography - emerging applications in hepatology.

The inspection of the liver is a valuable part of the upper endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) studies, regardless of the primary indication for the examination. The detailed images of the liver segments provided by EUS allows the use of this technique in the study of parenchymal liver disease and even in the diagnosis and classification of focal liver lesions. EUS has also emerged as an important tool in understanding the complex collateral circulation in patients with portal hypertension and their clinical and prognostic value. Recently, EUS-guided portal vein catheterization has been performe…

Postpartum ultrasound: postpartum assessment using ultrasonography.

Postpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is a potential cause of maternal mortality, and obstetricians must be prepared to rapidly diagnose and treat this condition. Optimal treatment is dependent upon the underlying cause of haemorrhage. Ultrasonography is the most helpful tool for prompt diagnosis of PPH aetiology and obstetricians must have a strong understanding of postpartum ultrasonography. In our previous report, we demonstrated the utility of ultrasonography using the focused assessment with sonography for obstetrics (FASO) technique (a modified version of FAST) as the primary postpartum obstetric…

Ultrasonography for neonatal brachial plexus palsy.

Ultrasonography has previously been reported for use in the evaluation of compressive or traumatic peripheral nerve pathology and for its utility in preoperative mapping. However, these studies were not performed in infants, and they were not focused on the brachial plexus. The authors report a case in which ultrasonography was used to improve operative management of neonatal brachial plexus palsy (NBPP). An infant boy was born at term, complicated by right-sided shoulder dystocia. Initial clinical evaluation revealed proximal arm weakness consistent with an upper trunk injury. Unlike MRI or C…

Ultrasonography in severe carpal tunnel syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: In up to 30% of patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS), the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the median nerve may not be enlarged. We hypothesize that this could be the result of secondary atrophy of the nerve in severe CTS. The aim of this study was to measure the ultrasonographic CSA of the median nerve at the wrist in patients with severe CTS. METHODS: In 14 consecutive patients with clinically and electrophysiologically defined severe CTS, the CSA of the median nerve was measured and compared with that of control subjects. RESULTS: CSA of the median nerve exceeded the uppe
