In view of the rapidly increasing number of AIDS cases reported in Kenya since 1984, a survey was conducted among Kenyatta University undergraduate students during October and November 1988 to gauge their knowledge, attitudes and practices with regard to the disease. A random sample of 344 individuals both men and women was interviewed. The results showed that almost everyone had heard about AIDS and the knowledge was spread evenly across gender. The University of Florida radiosurgical project began in 1986 with the following design criteria: the most accurate radiosurgical device possible, state-of-the-art computer hardware and software for dose planning, and a number of collimators sufficient to treat any lesion homogeneously. This study analyzed the first 100 laparoscopic cholecystectomies performed at a university teaching hospital by a single surgeon. Patients presented with chronic cholecystitis (92), acute cholecystitis (5), acalculus cholecystitis (2), and asymptomatic cholelithiasis (1). Pulmonary tuberculosis in Europe has been decreasing over the last decades. This study evaluates the current importance of extrapulmonary tuberculosis and its trend over the last 10 years. In a University Hospital in Spain, 20% of all bacteriologically confirmed tuberculosis cases were extrapulmonary. The most frequent site was the urinary tract (73.5%). Ziehl-Neelsen staining was positive in 50.6% of the cases. Löwenstein-Jensen cultures became positive, on average, after 4.6 +/- 1.4 weeks. The data presented in this chapter demonstrate that acceptable short-term results can now be achieved for patients receiving a pancreas transplant. We feel that urinary drainage and the use of a whole pancreas with a duodenal segment currently represent the most optimal technical approach. Immunosuppressive therapy using the quadruple induction protocol will prevent early rejection episodes in the majority of patients. One aspect of the current epidemic of venereal diseases is the spread of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV). Formerly confined to the lower echelons of society, it now affects more affluent classes as well. A cluster of four cases was seen in a small college town. Serial LGV complement fixation tests, the most valuable diagnostic tool, may reveal many more cases than reported previously. Early treatment is important. We recommend therapy for all persons sexually exposed to LGV who have any LGV complement fixation test anomaly, whether or not clinical signs develop.
