A case of advanced leiomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder is reported in a 25-year old man who, in a short time, experienced a complete 'spontaneous' regression of his fatal illness. He first presented with severe haemoperitoneum resulting from an unresectable bleeding tumour of the urinary bladder. Debulking surgery was performed, followed by salvage chemotherapy. Endometriosis of the urinary tract is uncommon, and the most common site of involvement is urinary bladder. Two cases of endometriosis of urinary bladder are presented. Thirty-one patients with primary or secondary carcinoma in situ of the urinary bladder were followed in an intensive surveillance program to study the untreated natural history of carcinoma in situ. This benign lesion can easily be mistaken for spindle cell sarcoma since it consists of rhabdomyoblast-like elongated strap cells showing infiltrative growth, and whether it is benign or malignant is difficult to determine by microscopic examination. We have reported a case of small cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder in a 65-year-old white man with a smoking history. He had radical cystectomy, but died 6 months after initial diagnosis. We studied the mechanism of adaptation to metabolic alkalosis by the turtle urinary bladder in vitro. Turtles were made alkalotic by administration of oral NaHCO3. Bladders removed from alkalotic turtles had an increased rate of HCO3- secretion in vitro as compared with that of control. Postmortem examination of 21,340 cattle at an Ontario abattoir over a one-year period revealed macroscopic lesions in urinary bladders of 2,296 animals (10.8%). Chronic cystitis, the most frequent finding, was observed in 2,209 cases (10.4%); uroliths were found in 994 (4.7%) of the cattle with chronic cystitis. Other types of urinary bladder lesions included acute cystitis, developmental abnormalities, hyperplasia, neoplasia, emphysema, and a parasitic cystitis.

During the years 1969 to 1983, 61 patients with rupture of the urinary bladder were treated at the Department of Surgery, University of Turku, Finland. The etiology of the injury was accident trauma in 48%, iatrogenic trauma in 28%, minor trauma in association with misuse of alcohol in 21% and other causes in 3% of the cases. In the first three groups the most reliable signs for diagnosing rupture were abdominal pain and tenderness, together with macroscopic or microscopic haematuria. Bladder stones were diagnosed in 22 children and young adults at The Children's Hospital, Boston, from 1969 to 1985. One half of the patients were less than 12 years old (mean, 11.9 years). One or more lithogenic factors were implicated in all but two.
