Percutaneous tube cystostomy and vesicular irrigation for treatment of obstructive urolithiasis in a goat.

Treatment of a 3-month-old male goat with obstructive urolithiasis by means of percutaneous tube cystostomy and vesicular irrigation with a chemolysis solution is described. The cystostomy tube was inserted percutaneously with ultrasonographic guidance. Patency of the urethra was reestablished with no clinical evidence of urethral stricture or recurrence of obstruction during the following 12 months. Results in this goat suggest that percutaneous tube cystostomy may be an economical alternative to surgical cystostomy tube placement. Chemical dissolution of calcium phosphate uroliths with a com

[A case of urolithiasis due to vitamin D intoxication in a patient with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism].

We report a case of urolithiasis in a patient with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism treated with vitamin D therapy. A 30-year-old woman with idiopathic hypoparathyroidism, who had been treated with vitamin D therapy with 2-4 micrograms/day of alpha-calcidol for 9 years, was admitted for recurrence of bilateral renal stones and progressing left hydronephrosis. Laboratory data revealed normal serum calcium level and remarkable hypercalciuria. The dose of oral administration of alpha-calcidol was reduced to 1 microgram/day and 2 mg/day of trichlormethiazide was started. Now her serum calcium concent

Magnesium status in idiopathic calcium urolithiasis--an orientational study in younger males.

With the aim of revealing a possible magnesium (Mg) deficiency in the aetiology of idiopathic recurrent calcium urolithiasis we studied the Mg content of red blood cells, serum total, protein-bound, ionised and complexed fractions of Mg, and urinary Mg after an overnight fast. The two study groups comprised 12 male recurrent calcium urolithiasis patients and 12 healthy male controls (mean age 31 and 29 years, respectively). In recurrent calcium urolithiasis, serum albumin and Mg of erythrocytes were significantly decreased, as was serum total and protein-bound Mg, whereas serum ultrafiltrable,

[A case of bilateral infection-induced urolithiasis in a bed-ridden elderly female].

A 79-year-old bedridden female in whom bilateral small renal calculi were pointed nine months previously, presented with a high fever and non-specific abdominal symptoms. A diagnosis of bilateral renal and ureteral stones causing hydronephroureters with severe infection was made. She was referred to the urology department and treated with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL). Persistent urinary tract infection caused by urease-producing bacteria, often seen in the bedridden elderly contributes to form infection-induced renal calculi. Such calculi are sometimes found in bilateral kidney

The frusemide test: simple screening test for renal acidification defect in urolithiasis.

Urinary pH was first labelled as a risk factor for patients with recurrent calcium stone disease of the renal tract in 1978. The standard diagnostic test for patients with a history of stones, who appear to have urinary acidification defects is the ammonium chloride test. However, the performance of this test results in significant morbidity, particularly nausea and vomiting, and as a result there is little enthusiasm for screening for such defects. We describe a screening test that may be used to determine which patients require more definitive testing. It involves an oral dose of frusemide (

Urolithiasis in a patient ingesting pure silica: a scanning electron microscopy study.

A patient who repeatedly produced urinary calculi, had consumed about 3 g of cristobalite (SiO2) per day for many years. Investigations using scanning electron microscopy revealed minute particles containing silicon in the core of the stone as well as in urine sediment. A mechanism similar to that proposed for the effect of silicon-containing drugs against gastric ulcer, may play a role in this formation of silicon-containing urinary stones.

Prevalence of renal urolithiasis in a large, captive white-tailed deer herd.

Prevalence of renal urolithiasis in a large, captive white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) herd was examined over a two-year period of time. In 1973, 1.3% of 225 deer examined had calculi in the renal pelvis and 4.4% had kidney lesions, either independent or in combination with the calculi. In 1974, prevalence increased and 5.9% of 354 deer had calculi and 6.5% had kidney lesions. Calculi and lesions affected all sex and age-classes. Involvement was both unilateral and bilateral with 23.8% having stones in both kidneys and 30.4% having lesions in both kidneys. Lesions and calculi occurred

Small Ureteral Access Sheath in Treating Paediatric Urolithiasis: A Single Centre Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Urolithiasis is not commonly encountered in the pediatric population. The adoption of ureteral access sheaths (UAS) facilitates the passage to the pediatric ureter and limits the harm and ureteral injury. However, the debate continues regarding whether or not to use UAS in children. OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and outcomes of using UAS in the treatment of pediatric renal and ureteral stones. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective cohort study of 14 pediatric patients who underwent flexible ureteroscopy (fURS) with the use of UAS for symptomatic renal and ureteric stones. RES

Xanthine urolithiasis causing bilateral ureteral obstruction in a 10-month-old cat.

Xanthine urolithiasis was diagnosed in a 10-month-old intact female domestic shorthair cat presented with acute renal failure due to bilateral ureteral obstruction. Ultrasonography revealed the presence of multiple uroliths in both kidneys and ureters that were not detectable on previous survey radiographs. Medical management failed and ureteral obstruction persisted with no evidence of stone migration into the bladder. Bilateral ureterotomy with urolith removal was performed in order to relieve the obstruction. The cat recovered from surgery, and blood urea nitrogen and creatinine values decr

Exposure to topiramate may not increase the risk of urolithiasis: A nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although topiramate is mechanistically linked to an increased risk of urolithiasis, real-world evidence remains conflicting. This study aimed to evaluate the risk of a first-time episode of urolithiasis associated with topiramate exposure in the Korean population. METHODS: Using the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort, we identified participants from the 2015 national health screening. After excluding individuals with a prior diagnosis of urolithiasis, we performed 1:4 propensity score matching between patients with and without topiramate ex

Dietary determinants of acid load in a population with urolithiasis from Yucatán, Mexico.

Dietary acid load (DAL) is a factor that predisposes individuals to the development of urolithiasis (UL). A cross-sectional study was conducted including individuals with UL (n = 53). We estimated DAL using the net endogenous acid production (NEAP) (90.6 [68.8-110] mEq/d), potential renal acid load (PRAL) (13 [0.07-20] mEq/d), and net renal acid excretion (NAE) (45 [30-55.3] mEq/d) indices in individuals with UL. Compared with females, male participants had higher NEAP, PRAL and NAE (p < 0.05). NEAP was associated with potassium, magnesium and lipid intake, body weight (BW), waist circumferenc

From contraception to urolithiasis: Migration of a contraceptive device into the urinary bladder lumen.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are widely used and generally safe contraceptives, though rare complications such as migration into adjacent organs may occur. We present a 34-year-old woman with suprapubic pain, dysuria, intermittent hematuria, and fatigue. Ultrasound revealed a bladder foreign body, further confirmed by multislice CT as an IUD. Cystoscopy demonstrated partial bladder wall embedding with stone encrustation. The device was successfully removed transurethrally. This case highlights the importance of considering IUD migration in women presenting with unexplained urinary tract symptom

Do urologists actually comply with the ALARA principle in pediatric urolithiasis management?

The purpose of the study was to determine the urologists' knowledge of ionizing radiation and the frequency of CT scan utilization for pediatric patients with urolithiasis. The second aim is to examine the factors that affect the choice of the CT imaging method in these patients. We sent a quantitative online questionnaire to urologists and pediatric urologists in various regions and practice settings of Turkey via a web survey database in June 2022. The survey consisted of 22 items in a multiple-choice or yes/no format and was divided into three sections: participant characteristics, knowledg

[Mitochondrial diseases and urolithiasis: Is there an association? Literature review about 2 cases].

UNLABELLED: Urolithiasis corresponds to the formation of stones in the urinary tract. It is a multifactorial metabolic disorder; its formation is related to oxidative stress and inflammatory processes. The mitochondria, for its part, is an intracellular organelle that plays a role in the regulation of intracellular oxidative stress and intracellular calcium homeostasis, both processes related to urolithiasis. Mitochondrial diseases are diverse pathologies that compromise different organs, including the urinary system. MATERIALS: Two cases of patients with mitochondrial diseases under study ar

The Impact of Ureteral Access Sheaths on Radiation Exposure in the Ureterorenoscopic Treatment of Urolithiasis.

INTRODUCTION: Ureteral access sheaths (UASs) are widely used in the endoscopic treatment of urolithiasis. In modern medicine, radiation exposure from diagnostics and therapy is increasing; however, the impact of UAS on procedure duration, fluoroscopy time, and radiation exposure is still uncertain. METHODS: This retrospective study included 1,026 patients who received ureterorenoscopic treatment for nephrolithiasis between 2016 and 2018 at a large academic center. Patients were dichotomized according to the use of UAS, and propensity-score matching was performed based on age, BMI, and stone s
