Longer-term response to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination after allogeneic blood stem cell transplantation.

INTRODUCTION: Recipients of allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (alloHSCT) are at increased risk of COVID-19 and lower vaccine immunogenicity. This study assessed vaccine immunogenicity and safety in these patients. METHODS: We analyzed the serological response after the 2nd and 3rd SARS-CoV-2 vaccination as well as potential factors influencing this response. Data were obtained from internal hospital records. In addition, a questionnaire was used to evaluate the vaccination status, vaccination side effects and the course of expired COVID-19 disease. RESULTS: In total, 114 pa

Factors associated with vaccine adherence among an underserved population: the adult Travellers in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France.

BACKGROUND: A measles epidemic affected the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region from November 2017 to May 2018 with clusters among Travellers. This indicates that measles vaccination rates among Travellers remain lower than in the general population. The objective of this study was to estimate the 'declarative vaccination' against measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) and to propose a conceptual framework to help identify determinants of MMR vaccination uptake among adult Travellers in Nouvelle-Aquitaine in 2019-20. METHODS: A cross-sectional study using random sampling was performed and included 612 adult

Are health education effective to improve herpes zoster vaccine willingness in vulnerable elderly.

BACKGROUND: Compared to other vaccines recommended for the elderly, the effectiveness of health education in improving the willingness to vaccinate the herpes zoster vaccine (HZV) in low-come residents remains unclear. METHODS: We recruited elderly participants from villages in Lingcheng District, and assigned each village to one of three health education interventions: oral health education, brochure-based health education, or video health education. The follow-up surveys were conducted immediately after each intervention. Baseline survey and the fifth follow-up were conducted at the beginni

Gaps in Hepatitis B Vaccination Completion and Sero-Protection for People Who Inject Drugs in Hpakant, Myanmar, 2015-2018.

Hepatitis B vaccination (HBV) is recommended for high-risk groups, such as people who inject drugs (PWIDs). As part of a harm reduction program by a non-governmental organization, hepatitis B screening, vaccination and antibody (HBAb) testing after completion of the vaccination schedule were offered to PWIDS in Myanmar. We determined the proportions of HBV non-completion and sero-unprotection among PWIDs enrolled in the program and their association with socio-demographic and clinical characteristics. We conducted a descriptive study based on routine program data in five selected clinics in Hp

A fatal course of COVID-19 during the Omicron surge: can you estimate your patients' SARS-CoV-2 immune status?

We present a case of an ultimately fatal course of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease-19) in an 81-year-old female patient during the Omicron surge. The patient did not represent the typical patient at risk for severe COVID-19 with significant causes of immunodeficiency. However, she had been skeptical about the vaccination for severe acute respiratory syndrome virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and had refused it. Moreover, there had been no previous COVID-19 episodes. Our case report illustrates that with regard to SARS-CoV-2, immunologically naive patients are still at risk for severe and/or even fatal course

Hepatitis A immunization in HIV-infected haemophilic patients.

Forty-seven HIV-infected haemophilic patients were entered into a hepatitis A vaccination programme. 10 patients (21%) were lgG seropositive for hepatitis A consistent with past exposure. Of the 37 patients offered vaccination, one refused and 31 completed the vaccination course, 17/13 (55%) seroconverted, nine after the second and eight after the third injection, and 14 patients failed to seroconvert. The CD4 lymphocyte counts immediately prior to vaccination were significantly higher in the patients who developed immunity compared to the nonresponders (median CD4 count in the immune group 38

Using the theoretical domains framework to explore reasons for missed opportunities for vaccination among children in Kano, Nigeria: a qualitative study in the pre-implementation phase of a collaborative quality improvement project.

Background: Missed opportunities for vaccination (MOV) have been identified as an important contributor to low childhood immunization coverage. In this study, we explore the reasons for MOV from the perspective of caregivers of children aged 0-23 months attending primary health care (PHC) facilities in Nassarawa Local Government Area (LGA) of Kano State, Nigeria. This was to inform the implementation of a quality improvement program to reduce MOV. Methodology: An exploratory qualitative research was conducted using focus group discussions (FGD) with caregivers of children aged 0-23 months that

Poliomyelitis prevention: revised recommendations for use of inactivated and live oral poliovirus vaccines. American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Infectious Diseases.

Since 1997 when the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued revised guidelines for the prevention of poliomyelitis, substantial progress in global eradication of poliomyelitis has occurred and the use of inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) has increased considerably in the United States with a corresponding decrease in the use of oral poliovirus vaccine (OPV). Surveys indicate that the majority of physicians now routinely immunize children with the sequential IPV-OPV or IPV-only regimens. Nevertheless, vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) continues to occur, albeit infrequent

Determining the Prevalence and Correlates of COVID-19 Booster Vaccine Hesitancy in the Singapore Population Following the Completion of the Primary Vaccination Series.

In response to declining vaccine-induced immunity and the emergence of new COVID-19 variants, COVID-19 booster vaccination programmes have been widely launched in several high-income countries. However, public response has been slow, and scepticism about these programmes is rising in these settings. This study sought to identify the sociodemographic, emotional, and psychological factors associated with COVID-19 booster vaccine hesitancy in Singapore. Derived from a community cohort, 1005 fully vaccinated adults (62.1% female, mean age = 42.6 years) that had not received their COVID-19 booster

Temporal evolution of electrocardiographic anomalies observed in a young woman after COVID-19 vaccine.

Electrocardiographic alterations of ventricular repolarization have already been reported in cases of myocarditis following coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) vaccine, but it is not clear how long they persist. A 21-year-old female presented with chest discomfort and diffuse myalgia a week after receiving the first dose of a messenger RNA (mRNA) COVID-19 vaccine. The 12 leads standard electrocardiogram unveiled negative T waves in anterior and inferior leads, while her troponin-I values resulted in the upper limit. A mild form of post-COVID-19 vaccine myocarditis was diagnosed since the echocar

Prevalence of intentions to receive monkeypox vaccine. A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Immunization, as a preventive strategy against infectious diseases, has consolidated its position as a fundamental pillar in the field of public health. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine the prevalence of the intention to receive the monkeypox (Mpox) vaccine. METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of the available evidence was performed using five databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Embase, and ScienceDirect) with a search strategy until July 24, 2023. Data analysis was performed in R software version 4.2.3. The quality of the included cross-sectional

The Greater Good: Agency and Inoculation in the British Army, 1914-18.

As the First World War progressed, rates of typhoid diminished. This was heralded as a triumph of sanitary improvement and disease protection; yet as to how the British military achieved this remains a contentious issue. Objections arose around the danger of inoculation and the unpleasant and potentially deadly side effects. Between the unaffected and the sufferers of the vaccine's side effects are the unexplored stories of the refusers. Often bizarre, their accounts include stories of unsanctioned cajoling, arrests, suspension of privileges, and even physically forced inoculation. Soldiers co

MMR Vaccination and Hen's Egg Allergy: Bridging the Gap Between Evidence and Clinical Practice.

Background: Measles has re-emerged in recent years as a public health concern in the context of insufficient vaccination coverage. Some children experience significant delays in receiving, or refuse to take, the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccination, often due to concerns related to hen's egg allergy (HEA). Methods: In this study, we retrospectively assessed the safety of MMR vaccination (Priorix®, GlaxoSmithKline, Belgium) in patients with HEA hospitalised at our clinic. Detailed medical histories were collected, along with skin prick tests and measurements of specific IgE against milk

Psychometric validation of the COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy scale for primary and booster doses among university students: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Vaccine hesitancy (VH) continues to impede COVID-19 vaccine coverage. Booster dose uptake lags behind primary dose uptake, especially among younger adults. Unlike most studies that focus on initial stages of VH, the aim of this study was to validate the COVID-19 Vaccine Hesitancy Scale (CVHS) for both primary and booster doses among University of Waterloo (UW) students. METHODS: An online survey was conducted among UW students in Ontario, Canada, between March and May 2024. The CVHS items were adapted for primary and booster doses. Exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory factor analyse

European policies on tuberculosis prevention in healthcare workers: Which role for BCG? A systematic review.

National recommendations regarding the immunization of healthcare workers (HCWs) against tuberculosis differ throughout Europe. We searched multiple sources to identify legal acts, guidelines or papers addressing European national policies on BCG immunization for HCWs. For each policy, we reviewed the criteria used to recommend immunization, their level of evidence, the evidence supporting them and the actions required in cases of refusal. Four legal acts, 15 policies and 6 papers from 14 European countries met the inclusion criteria. Among European national agencies, 5 only recommend the immu

Profiling vaccine attitudes and subsequent uptake in 1·1 million people in England: a nationwide cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Despite highly effective vaccines against SARS-CoV-2, COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy persisted in some populations in England during the pandemic, with rates and motivations for hesitancy varying by demographic group. Addressing the drivers of vaccine hesitancy through targeted interventions in hesitant groups is a public health priority for better and more rapid control of disease spread. We aimed to characterise the determinants and subtypes of vaccine hesitancy and identify more persistent forms of hesitancy via analysis of vaccine uptake in a large cross-sectional cohort with linke

Previsit Screening for Parental Vaccine Hesitancy: A Cluster Randomized Trial.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of vaccine hesitancy screening on childhood vaccine uptake. METHODS: We conducted a cluster randomized controlled trial in pediatric primary care clinics in Washington state. Vaccine-hesitant parents (VHPs) with a healthy newborn receiving health supervision at participating clinics were eligible. VHPs were identified by using a 4-item version of the validated Parent Attitudes About Childhood Vaccines Survey (PACV). Before their child's 2- and 6-month health supervision visits, VHPs at intervention clinics completed the 15-item PACV embedded in a survey conta

Mumps in the Vaccination Age: Global Epidemiology and the Situation in Germany.

Vaccination against mumps virus (MuV) (mostly measles-mumps-rubella) is routinely performed in more than 120 countries and has resulted in a distinct decrease of mumps incidence. However, alteration of mumps epidemiology has been observed in several countries after implementation of the vaccine but is sparsely documented. Moreover, outbreaks have occurred after starting vaccination, even in highly vaccinated populations. In the former German Democratic Republic (DDR) mumps was a notifiable disease but vaccination against mumps was not implemented. In the five eastern German states forming the
