Over 7 million people worldwide die annually from erratic heart rhythms (cardiac arrhythmias), and many more are disabled. Yet there is no imaging modality to identify patients at risk, provide accurate diagnosis and guide therapy. Standard diagnostic techniques such as the electrocardiogram (ECG) provide only low-resolution projections of cardiac electrical activity on the body surface. Here we demonstrate the successful application in humans of a new imaging modality called electrocardiographic imaging (ECGI), which noninvasively images cardiac electrical activity in the heart. In ECGI, a mu

Prevention of recurrences of atrial fibrillation, slowing the ventricular rate during atrial fibrillation, and the acute management of atrioventricular junctional reentrant supraventricular tachycardia (paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia) often require treatment with antiarrhythmic drugs. These drugs comprise a pharmacodynamically and pharmacokinetically heterogeneous group of agents whose individual properties determine correct use, contraindications and side effects. Stabilisation of sinus rhythm can be achieved with class IA and class IC sodium channel blocking drugs as well as with th

Concerns about the safety and efficacy of class IC antiarrhythmic agents have arisen as a result of the recent CAST data. We reviewed records of 175 consecutive patients treated with flecainide between July 1, 1988 and July 5, 1989. One hundred ten patients with normal or mildly impaired left ventricular function and symptomatic supraventricular arrhythmias were identified. Follow-up data were obtained on 102 patients for a mean of 14 months. The average duration of flecainide therapy was 13 months. Tachyarrhythmias treated included atrial fibrillation/flutter, atrioventricular reentry, and at

Six patients with spontaneous angina associated with transient ST segment elevation had a multistate maximal exercise (bicycle) test. In 5 patients, typical electrocardiographic changes were recorded during exercise, namely ST segment elevation often accompanied by an increase in the voltage of the R wave and a widening of the QRS complex. Four of these patients developed severe rhythm disturbances: ventricular tachycardia (2 cases) and ventricular flutter (1 case) were the reason for early interruption of the test in 3 patients, while 1 patient had a short run of ventricular tachycardia after…

The effects of stimulating the right atrial ventral ganglionated plexus on ventricular performance during atrial tachycardia was studied in 8 lightly sedated (pentobarbital, 2.5 mg/kg intravenously) dogs with sterile pericarditis. Atrial arrhythmias were induced by electrical stimulation (10 V, 4 ms, 100 Hz) of the right atrium through previously inserted temporary bipolar pacemaker wires. Various types of supraventricular tachycardias were produced. Atrial fibrillation was produced in 3 dogs, atrial tachycardia in all 8 dogs, different atrioventricular nodal ectopic rhythms in 6 dogs, and atr

BACKGROUND: The risk of major adverse cardiovascular events is substantially increased following a stroke. Although exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation has been shown to improve prognosis following cardiac events, it is not part of routine care for people following a stroke. We, therefore, investigated the association between cardiac rehabilitation and major adverse cardiovascular events for people following a stroke. Following a stroke, individuals have an increased risk of new-onset cardiovascular complications. However, the incidence and long-term clinical consequence of newly diagnosed c

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation and heart failure are common coexisting conditions requiring hospitalisation for heart failure and death. Pulmonary vein isolation is a well-established option for symptomatic atrial fibrillation and for atrial fibrillation concomitant with heart failure with reduced left ventricular ejection fraction. Recently, pulmonary vein isolation using cryoballoon showed non-inferiority to radiofrequency ablation with respect to the treatment of patients with drug-refractory paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. However, the effectiveness of acute-phase rhythm control by semi-u

Cardiac involvement is a well-recognized component of Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), typically manifesting later in childhood as progressive cardiomyopathy and arrhythmias. Early cardiac presentations, particularly in the neonatal period, are exceedingly rare. We report a neonate who presented with atrial flutter in the absence of structural heart disease or ventricular dysfunction. The patient underwent successful cardioversion, and initial cardiac evaluation, including echocardiography, was unremarkable. However, markedly elevated creatine kinase levels prompted further investigation. A

BACKGROUND: Amiodarone belongs to Class-III anti-arrhythmic drugs. It is one of the most effective anti-arrhythmic drugs used to treat or prevent several types of arrhythmias including atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, ventricular tachycardia, and wide complex tachycardia, but unfortunately carries a high toxicity profile. Also, side effects of amiodarone involving various organs can be life-threatening.
MATERIALS & METHODS: This was an observational study carried out for six months i.e from April to September. The study included patients who are on amiodarone for greater than or equal to

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular events have been reported in the setting of coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19). It has been hypothesized that systemic inflammation may aggravate arrhythmias or trigger new-onset conduction abnormalities. However, the specific type and distribution of electrocardiographic disturbances in COVID-19 as well as their influence on mortality remain to be fully characterized.
METHODS: Electrocardiograms (ECGs) were obtained from 186 COVID-19-positive patients at a large tertiary care hospital in Northern Nevada. The following arrhythmias were identified by cardiologists: si

Between 1984 and 1988, 21 patients underwent catheter ablation for drug refractory arrhythmias. Nine patients presented atrial flutter, atrial fibrillation or atrial tachycardia, nine had supraventricular tachycardia (one AV nodal reentrant tachycardia, one reciprocating tachycardia due to concealed accessory pathway and seven WPW syndrome). Three had ventricular tachycardia. Fourteen patients were treated with direct current shock ablation (DC) and seven patients with radiofrequency ablation (RF). Eight patients underwent ablation of the His bundle. In six patients permanent AV block could be

An asymptomatic nine-year-old Dobermann Pinscher underwent a screening for dilated cardiomyopathy. Echocardiography revealed left ventricular eccentric hypertrophy and systolic dysfunction; the rest of the echocardiographic parameters were within normal limits. Holter monitoring demonstrated sinus rhythm as the dominant cardiac rhythm during the first hours of the recording. Then, during a period of physiologically enhanced vagal tone (sleep), spontaneous development of atrial flutter (AFL) associated with variable ventricular response was documented. Alternation between AFL and paroxysmal atr

BACKGROUND Atrial flutter is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Standard treatment involves rate and rhythm control medications, with ablation procedures reserved for more persistent cases. While ablation is generally successful, it carries risks, such as complete heart block, as in this case. CASE REPORT A 73-year-old woman presented for ablation of recurrent atypical atrial flutter. Electro-anatomic mapping demonstrated counterclockwise mitral annular flutter. An anterior ablation line was initially created from the right superior pulmonary vein to the mitral valve annulus.

The prevalence of congenital heart disease (CHD) in adult patients has risen with advances in diagnostic and surgical techniques. Surgical modifications and hemodynamic changes increase the susceptibility to arrhythmias, impacting morbidity and mortality rates, with arrhythmias being the leading cause of hospitalizations and sudden deaths. Patients with CHD commonly experience both supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, with each CHD type associated with different arrhythmia patterns. Macroreentrant atrial tachycardias, particularly cavotricuspid isthmus-dependent flutter, are frequentl

Electrocardiographic abnormalities had been reported, in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage, with variable percentage from 2% to 91%, according to several studies. The most common changes are T wave inversion, ST segment elevation or depression, QT prolongation, U waves, atrial flutter and fibrillation, ventricular fibrillation, supraventricular tachycardia, premature atrial and ventricular contractions. These findings occur within the first forty-eight hours after the onset of the symptoms; they usually are benign and transient. In a small percentage of cases generally in severe ESA, the E

OBJECTIVES: Most ICUs use protocolized magnesium supplementation, yet the clinical effect of this practice is unknown.
DESIGN: Pseudo-randomized retrospective study comparing patients who were and were not assigned to receive magnesium supplementation, using a protocol where supplementation occurs when serum levels are less than or equal to 0.95 mmol/L (2.31 mg/dL). Primary outcome was atrial fibrillation or flutter within 24 hours. Secondary outcomes were tachyarrhythmia (supraventricular tachycardia or ventricular arrhythmia) and death within 24 hours.
SETTING: ICUs with a shared magnesium

A seven-year-old female neutered Parson Russel terrier was referred for syncopal episodes. An electrocardiogram revealed paroxysmal atrial flutter followed by periods of sinus arrest, suggesting sick sinus syndrome. Echocardiography showed severe biventricular wall thickening (hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) phenotype) with no signs of fixed or dynamic left ventricular outflow tract obstruction. Blood pressure, abdominal ultrasound, serum total thyroxin and thyroid-stimulating hormone, and insulin-like growth factor-1 were all within normal limits. Cardiac troponin I was elevated (1.7 ng/mL,

Cavotricuspid isthmus (CTI) linear ablation has been established as the treatment for typical atrial flutter. Recently, ablation index (AI) has emerged as a novel marker for estimating ablation lesions. We investigated the relationship between CTI depth and ablation parameters on the procedural results of typical atrial flutter ablation. A total of 107 patients who underwent CTI ablation were retrospectively enrolled in this study. All patients underwent computed tomography before catheter ablation. From the receiver-operating curve, the best cut-off value of CTI depth was < 4.1 mm to predict
