BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Unstable burst fractures of the thoracolumbar spine may be treated surgically. Vertebral body replacements (VBRs) give anterior column support and, when used with supplemental fixation, impart rigidity to the injured segments. Although some VBRs are expandable, device congruity to the vertebral end plates is imprecise and may lead to stress risers and device subsidence.
PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to compare the rigidity of a VBR that self-adjusts to the adjacent vertebral end plates versus structural bone allograft and with an unsupported anterior column in a…

UNLABELLED: The body of the vertebra can be affected in the majority of the conditions involving the lumbar spine. Multiple references, both books and periodicals, have been reviewed, and the anatomical factors responsible for the vertebral body integrity in the lumbar spine have been included under the following important areas, namely, morphology, development, genetics, microscopic examination using histology, structural architecture, blood supply, neuromuscular control, and biomechanics.
INTRODUCTION: The anatomy provides a three-dimensional frame work to support the interaction between th…

The objective of this study was to determine the expression, distribution in the column, and overall frequency of sagittal clefting of the vertebral body in the skeletons of two Canadian Inuit groups. One group, referred to as Thule-Historic, lived along the coast northwest of Hudson Bay, while the other, known as the Sadlermiut, were limited to Southampton Island and Coats Island north of Hudson Bay. The Thule-Historic people are thought to be the ancestors of the present-day Inuit of this region, whereas the much smaller, relatively isolated Sadlermiut became extinct during the winter of 190…

Previous studies have implied that increases in loading rate resulted in changes in vertebral mechanical properties and these changes were causative factors in the different fracture types seen with high-speed events. Thus many researchers have explored the vertebral body response under various loading rate conditions. No other study has investigated the role of the endplate in high-speed vertebral injuries. The current study determined changes in the endplate and vertebral body strength with increases in displacement rate. The endplate and vertebral body failure loads in individual lumbar ver…

Percutaneous vertebroplasty, a minimally invasive interventional radiological procedure, has recently been used effectively for the treatment of symptomatic vertebral body compression fractures. Primary indications for vertebroplasty include osteoporotic compression fracture, osteolytic vertebral metastasis and myeloma, and vertebral hemangioma. We present a case and extend the indication of percutaneous vertebroplasty in a patient with a vertebral body compression fracture secondary to osteogenesis imperfecta.

STUDY DESIGN: This case report describes a patient with massive intramuscular and paravertebral arteriovenous malformations with destruction of vertebral bodies.
OBJECTIVES: To demonstrate successful interbody fusion of the involved vertebral bodies after embolization for arteriovenous malformation.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Although arteriovenous malformations in the spinal cord are well documented in the literature, arteriovenous malformation in the paravertebral and iliopsoas muscles with destruction of vertebral bodies is an extremely rare clinical condition.
METHODS: After careful in

To calculate canal compromise and decrease of midsagittal diameter caused by retropulsion of fragments into the spinal canal we analyzed the pre- and postoperative computed tomographies of 32 patients with unstable thoracolumbar burst fractures treated by USS (universal spine system). Our intention was to examine the efficiency of ultrasound guided repositioning of the dispaced fragments which was performed in all 32 cases. We found a clear postoperative enlargement of canal area (ASP preoperatively 55%, postop. 80%) and midsagittal diameter (MSD preop. 58%, postop. 78%). 10 of 13 patients pre

Attention is drawn to line shadows occurring occasionally in the x-ray image above the base plates of the vertebral bodies. These line shadows can be interpreted correctly only in the tomogram. This shows that there are indentations in the area of the base plates or that these indentations, if already present, are deeper than was to be expected on studying the x-ray. The tomographically detected or particularly deep indentations are due to excess strain being exerted on the presently still unstable juvenile vertebral column.

The potentialities of vertebral body section roentgenography have recently been enlarged to include the direct study of soft tissues within the vertebral canal. The writers report a series of observations on the pathology of disc protrusion, spinal stenosis and cicatricial stenosis following laminectomy, carried out by means of a third generation scanner, the Somatom SF. This apparatus makes it possible to integrate the data furnished by traditional radiological investigations and by scanners of previous generations, thus demonstrating new aspects of the pathology of the lumbar nerve roots.

PURPOSE: Vertebral Body Tethering (VBT) yields improving postoperative results. However, tether breakage remains a common complication, especially in thoracolumbar (TL) curves, and can negatively impact the outcome. The pathomechanism behind TL tether breakages is not well understood, yet this knowledge is essential for improving surgical planning. Therefore, the study aimed to investigate the timing and location of tether breakage in double-row (TL) revision cases.
MATERIAL: This study performed a descriptive analysis of consecutively explanted double-row implants in TL VBT patients who unde…

BACKGROUND: Fusion into the lumbar spine with lower instrumented vertebra (LIV) of L2 and below can result in increased mobility or hypermobility of the unfused segments, potentially contributing to early disk and joint wear and subsequent degenerative arthritis. Vertebral body tethering (VBT) is a motion-preserving surgery for scoliosis, but no data is available about its effect on disk motion for the uninstrumented segments distal to the LIV. We hypothesize that VBT preserves the coronal arc of motion distal to the LIV in AIS patients without the development of hypermobility which has been o…

BACKGROUND: Osteochondromas are common benign bone tumors, but spinal involvement is rare (<4%), with vertebral body origin being exceptionally uncommon. Neurological symptoms are typically mild and unilateral, making presentations mimicking incomplete cauda equina syndrome (CES) exceedingly rare.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old Indian male presented with progressive lower back pain, followed by bilateral lower limb weakness and saddle anesthesia. There was no history of trauma, radiation, malignancy, or inflammatory disease. Neurological examination revealed flaccid paraplegia, areflexia, a…

UNLABELLED: This retrospective study compared the efficacy of anabolic agents (romosozumab and teriparatide) with that of alendronate in preventing subsequent vertebral body fractures (SVBFs) after balloon kyphoplasty (BKP). All anabolic agents significantly reduced SVBFs. Romosozumab was most effective in increasing bone mineral density (BMD) and completely suppressed distant vertebral body fractures.
INTRODUCTION: To determine optimal anti-osteoporosis medications, we compared romosozumab and teriparatide to alendronate as a control from perioperative BKP to the 1st postoperative year for t…

PURPOSE: In this 6-year study we identified factors associated with spontaneous vertebral body reshaping in glucocorticoid (GC)-treated children with leukemia, rheumatic disorders, and nephrotic syndrome.
METHODS: Subjects were 79 children (mean age 7.4 years) who had vertebral fracture (VF) evaluation on lateral spine radiographs at least 1 year after VF detection. VF were graded using the modified Genant semiquantitative method and fracture burden for individuals was quantified using the spinal deformity index (SDI; sum of grades from T4 to L4).
RESULTS: Sixty-five children (82.3%) underwe…
