Locomotion-dependent use of geometric and body cues in humans mapping 3D space.

The ability to represent locations across multiple dimensions of space is a core function of cognitive maps. While the influence of boundary-dependent environmental geometry on spatial representations has been extensively studied in 2D spaces, less is known about the role of boundaries for volumetric spatial memory. Research in humans and other animals has demonstrated distinct processing of the vertical and horizontal spatial dimensions, likely related to species-specific modes of locomotion. Here, we investigate whether different locomotion modes, flying and walking, affect the use of vertic

Multilevel nanoimprint lithography with a binary mould for plasmonic colour printing.

Pigment-free colouration based on plasmonic resonances has recently attracted considerable attention for potential in manufacturing and othe … size of the structure during the nanoimprinting process. Furthermore, to show full control over the vertical dimension, we show that a fixed gap size can be produced by introducing complementary microcavities in the vicinity of the nanostructures on the original mould. This demonstrates a simple method for obtaining an additional degree of freedom in NIL not only fo …

rTMS over the human medial parietal cortex impairs online reaching corrections.

Indirect correlational evidence suggests that the posteromedial sector of the human parietal cortex (area hV6A) is involved in reaching corrections. We interfered with hV6A functions using repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) while healthy participants performed reaching movements and in-flight adjustments of the hand trajectory in presence of unexpected target shifts. rTMS over hV6A specifically altered action reprogramming, causing deviations of the shifted trajectories, particularly along the vertical dimension (i.e., distance). This study provides evidence of the functional …

Locomotor action sequences impact the scale of representation in hippocampus and posterior parietal cortex.

The hippocampus and posterior parietal cortex are implicated in both episodic memory and encoding of position in an environment. In the present study, we examine the impact of locomotor behaviors associated with movement in both the horizontal and vertical dimensions on population activity patterns in these two brain structures. We utilized a five-looped, squared spiral track containing stair segments, ramp segments, and flat segments. In addition to encoding locations along the full route, posterior parietal cortex population activity demonstrates strong pattern recurrence for similar action …

[Occlusal reconstruction of a patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia].

Prosthodontic treatment for patient with hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (HED) is difficult to manage because of the loss of occlusal vertical dimension, abnormal alveolar ridge and anodontia A 20-year-old case with HED was reported. The patient was treated with occlusal reconstruction by a maxillary fixed prosthesis and mandibular telescopic prosthesis. At one-year's follow-up, dentures were well used and occlusal function of the patient returned to normal.

Bone dimensional changes after flapless immediate implant placement with and without bone grafting: Randomized clinical trial.

INTRODUCTION: Immediate implant in postextraction sockets requires managing the postextraction alveolar resorption. This randomized clinical trial examined vertical and horizontal changes 1-year following flapless immediate implant with and without xenograft at sites with thin labial plate. METHODS: Forty patients with hopeless teeth in maxillary esthetic zone were randomly assigned to receiving either one immediate implant without bone graft (control) or with bone graft (intervention). Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans were obtained pre-extraction and 1-year postoperatively to measu

Simultaneous Septal Perforation Repair with Septorhinoplasty: A 31-Year Experience.

Septal perforation repair and septorhinoplasty (SRP) each present unique surgical challenges. However, in many instances, these procedures m … imary or revision SRP via an open approach without compromising the perforation repair outcome. The vertical dimension of a septal perforation and presence of mucosa above and below a perforation are important considerations for the difficulty of a perforation closure, as septal mucosa is recruited from these locations in our technique of four-quadrant intranasal bi …

Association Between Variations In Sella Turcica Dimensions And Morphology And Skeletal Malocclusions.

BACKGROUND: The growth of sella turcica is completed early in life, therefore it can be used as a stable landmark for the prediction of future skeletal malocclusions. This early diagnosis may help in planning less complicated treatment modalities. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the relationship between sella turcica dimensions and morphology with various skeletal patterns. METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted using the pre-treatment cephalograms of 180 subjects aged 13-19 years. The subjects were divided into two groups based on skeletal patterns. The dimensions of sella tu

Radiological evaluation of facial types in mouth breathing children: a retrospective study.

Mouth breathing is a condition often associated with a long face, half-open mouth and increased anterior facial height. We performed conventional lateral and frontal cephalograms of eighty-nine children with nasal and mouth breathing and independently measured Total Facial Height using the analysis technique of Ricketts, and the Morphologic Facial Index employing the technique of Avila. It was concluded that dolicofacial following mesofacial were the most frequent patterns found in mouth-breathing children and this suggests that both analyses can be used independently.

Prosthodontic treatment of the edentulous adult cleft palate patient.

Clefts of the upper lip and plate are relatively common, yet dental treatment of these patients is still very poor and many grow up suffering dental neglect. Dental practitioners should become involved in the treatment team as dental needs are present from birth to death. Adult cleft patients often need tooth replacement with obturation of any residual clefts. They are best treated with tooth-supported removable appliances including partial and complete overdentures, thus preservation of their natural dentition is desirable. Edentulous cleft palate patients present with restorative difficultie

Adjustment of localized alveolar ridge defects by soft tissue transplantation to improve mucogingival esthetics: a proposal for clinical classification and an evaluation of procedures.

Esthetically correct treatment of a localized alveolar ridge defect is a frequent prosthetic challenge. Such defects can be overcome not only by a variety of prosthetic means, but also by several periodontal surgical techniques, notably soft tissue augmentations. Preoperative classification of the localized alveolar ridge defect can be greatly useful in evaluating the prognosis and technical difficulties involved. A semiquantitative classification, dependent on the severity of vertical and horizontal dimensional loss, is proposed to supplement the recognized qualitative classification of a rid

Craniofacial growth in bilateral cleft lip and palate patients following secondary premaxillary setback.

Data of an experimental group of bilateral cleft lip and palate patients (BCLP) who had undergone premaxillary setback at a mean age of 10.2 years were compared with a control group of standard cephalometric values for the white population, and with cephalometric data of BCLP patients from the Oslo Cleft Lip and Palate Archive who did not have premaxillary setback. Cephalometric lateral skull radiographs were taken at a mean age of 16.6 years when most facial growth is completed. Overall, the most marked difference between the two cleft samples was a slightly more concave profile in the experi
