Rate of sustained virologic response in relation to baseline hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA level and rapid virologic clearance in persons with acute HCV infection.

Treatment of acute hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection leads to a sustained virologic response (SVR) in the vast majority of patients, although the clinical predictors of these favorable responses are not well understood. In chronic infection, the most potent predictor of a SVR is complete viral suppression after 4 weeks of treatment, also known as a rapid virologic response (RVR). However, few patients with HCV genotype 1 infection and high-level viremia ever achieve this benchmark. In 2 separate cohorts of patients with acute HCV infection, we demonstrate that rapid virologic clearance and low

Virological and metabolic outcomes after switching to dolutegravir or rilpivirine in virologically suppressed adults with HIV in Thailand: an open-label, randomised, controlled, non-inferiority trial.

BACKGROUND: Dolutegravir (DTG)-based antiretroviral therapy is widely recommended; however, weight gain and metabolic effects remain a concern. Rilpivirine (RPV) is a potential switch option for virologically suppressed individuals with HIV receiving efavirenz (EFV)-based treatment. We aimed to compare the virological and metabolic outcomes after switching from TDF/FTC/EFV to TDF/3TC/DTG or TDF/FTC plus RPV. METHODS: In this randomised, open-label, parallel-group, non-inferiority trial at Maharat Nakhon Ratchasima Hospital, Thailand, adults with HIV-1 RNA below 50 copies per mL for at least 6

Predictors of virologic outcome among people living with HIV who continue a protease inhibitor-based antiretroviral regimen following virologic failure with no or limited resistance.

BACKGROUND: Treatment management after repeated failure of antiretroviral therapy (ART) is difficult due to resistance and adherence challenges. For people who have failed non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor-(NNRTI-) and protease inhibitor-(PI-) based regimens with no or limited resistance, remaining on PI-based ART is an option. Using data from an ART strategy trial (A5288) in low/middle-income countries which included this option, we explored whether predictors can be identified distinguishing those who experienced further virologic failure from those who achieved and maintained v

A tangible and interactive viral model for enhancing virology education: using hepatitis B virus as a model system.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections continue to pose a significant global health challenge each year, highlighting the critical need for a comprehensive understanding of this hepatotropic DNA virus within the context of virology education. Many undergraduate students, however, struggle to master the complex architecture of HBV, particularly the three-dimensional structure of the Dane particle and the immunological principles underlying the Hepatitis B Panel, when relying solely on traditional two-dimensional representations. To address this educational gap, we developed a tangible, interactive,

Drugs in the environment, viruses in the balance: a review of the untold nexus of pharmaceuticals and virology.

OBJECTIVES: The pervasive contamination of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems by active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) is a well-documented environmental challenge. However, the impact of this pollution on the most abundant biological entities on Earth viruses has remained a critical blind spot. This review provides the first integrated synthesis of the bidirectional nexus between pharmaceutical pollution and environmental virology. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus using search terms related to pharmaceuticals, viruses, and the

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV): A comprehensive review of its virology, epidemiology, clinical features, and advances in diagnosis and prevention.

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a leading viral cause of respiratory infections worldwide, particularly affecting children, elderly adults, and immunocompromised individuals. Since its discovery in 2001, HMPV has been recognized as a significant pathogen responsible for both upper and lower respiratory tract infections, often manifesting as bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and wheezing in infants, as well as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in older adults and immunocompromised patients. Although it shares clinical features with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), HMPV is genetically distinc

Parvovirus B19 serological states and antinuclear antibody positivity: A comparative clinical virology study including EBV and CMV DNAemia.

BACKGROUND: Acute viral infections can mimic systemic autoimmune rheumatic disease (SARD), and concurrent antinuclear antibody (ANA) screening may complicate diagnostic interpretation. Whether Parvovirus B19 (B19V) serological and molecular states differ in their association with ANA positivity remains uncharacterized. METHODS: This retrospective cross-sectional study stratified 205 immunocompetent patients into seven synchronized groups: acute B19V infection, past B19V infection, B19V-DNA+/IgM- profile, atypical B19V, B19V-naive status, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) DNAemia, and cytomegalovirus (

Systems Virology and Human Cytomegalovirus: Using High Throughput Approaches to Identify Novel Host-Virus Interactions During Lytic Infection.

Human Cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a highly prevalent herpesvirus, persistently infecting between 30 and 100% of the population, depending on socio-economic status (Fields et al., 2013). HCMV remains an important clinical pathogen accounting for more than 60% of complications associated with solid organ transplant patients (Kotton, 2013; Kowalsky et al., 2013; Bruminhent and Razonable, 2014). It is also the leading cause of infectious congenital birth defects and has been linked to chronic inflammation and immune aging (Ballard et al., 1979; Griffith et al., 2016; Jergovic et al., 2019). There is

Typhus vaccine developments from the First to the Second World War (on Paul Weindling's 'between bacteriology and virology...').

After the louse transmission of epidemic typhus had been established (1909), a small microorganism (thought to belong to a new genus, Rickettsia) was shown in enormous numbers in the guts of lice that had fed on human typhus victims. Attempts at cultivating this organism on inert media failed; transfer from louse to louse without loss of virulence for the vertebrate host was successful. Some scientists were not convinced of the etiologic role of Rickettsiae, because the presence of this microbe in blood and organs of victims or of experimentally infected animals was difficult to demonstrate. BK Polyomavirus in Renal Transplantation: Virological Notes for Monitoring and Diagnosis.

Polyomavirus-associated nephropathy was first reported over 50 years ago. However, it still represents a cause of renal injury in kidney transplant recipients, particularly in the first two years post-transplantation, with occurrence rates of 1-10%. The role played by immunosuppression in viral reactivation is well acknowledged, and the modulation of its level is the main strategy for clinical management. Viral and immunological evaluation are fundamental for optimizing its diagnostic and therapeutic pathway. In this review, the main features of BK polyomavirus and associated nephropathy in re

Molecular findings and virological assessment of bladder papillomavirus infection in cattle.

Bovine and ovine papillomaviruses (BPVs - OaPVs) are infectious agents that have an important role in bladder carcinogenesis of cattle. In an attempt to better understand territorial prevalence of papillomavirus genotypes and gain insights into their molecular pathway(s), a virological assessment of papillomavirus infection was performed on 52 bladder tumors in cattle using droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR), an improved version of conventional PCR. ddPCR detected and quantified BPV DNA and mRNAs in all tumor samples, showing that these viruses play a determinant role in bovine

Hepatitis B virus-induced hepatocarcinogenesis: A virological and oncological perspective.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a partially double-stranded DNA virus associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The viral integration into the hepatocyte genome, the viral protein-induced oncogenesis, the increased hepatocyte turnover and the chronic inflammatory response towards HBV are all hypothesized mechanisms for the development of HCC. The fact that HBV infection and HCC prevalence show different correlations in various regions of the world indicates that there may be virus-independent phenomena for cancer development in these regions. From this point of view, it is important to review
