Characteristics of Filoviridae: Marburg and Ebola viruses.

Filoviruses are enveloped, nonsegmented negative-stranded RNA viruses. The two species, Marburg and Ebola virus, are serologically, biochemically, and genetically distinct. Marburg virus was first isolated during an outbreak in Europe in 1967, and Ebola virus emerged in 1976 as the causative agent of two simultaneous outbreaks in southern Sudan and northern Zaire. Although the main route of infection is known to be person-to-person transmission by intimate contact, the natural reservoir for filoviruses still remains a mystery.

Human papilloma viruses in the human hypopharynx.

The possible association of human papilloma viruses (HPV) with laryngopharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma is under investigation. Recent work suggests regional differences in the prevalence of HPV infection in the hypopharynx. The present study investigates the prevalence of HPV in tissue obtained from a series of piriform fossae. Piriform fossa epithelium was harvested from 12 autopsy cases free of local disease. DNA was obtained by SDS/Proteinase K digestion. Evidence of HPV infection was documented by the polymerase chain reaction using oligonucleotide primers complementary to sequences in t…

Role of viruses in the etiopathogenesis of multiple sclerosis.

Epidemiological studies performed to identify the possible cause of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) suggest that an environmental agent could be involved in its etiopathogenesis. For a long time it has been hypothesized that this agent was a virus, but until now no virus specific to MS has been consistently identified. Animal models indicate that the demyelination of the central nervous system can be induced by certain families of viruses, but the implication of this in the etiopathogenesis of MS has not been clearly demonstrated. Morbilliviruses were the most studied. Research on this subject arose f…

Independent evolution of monkeypox and variola viruses.

[Viruses relevant to the mother-child relationship].

Virus that may infect the mother with serous consequences for the child include rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes simplex, hepatitis B, papilloma and AIDS. They may be transmitted from mother to child before, during or after delivery. Preventive measures include: a) vaccination of females against rubella; b) vaccination and administration of gammaglobulin anti-hepatitis B in newborns from infected mothers and c) cesarean section in pregnant women with genital infection by herpes or papilloma. Early treatment with anti-viral agents may help reduce the intensity of viral infections in the newborn

Sarcoidosis and infections by human lymphotropic viruses.

In sera of 38 patients with sarcoidosis, assayed for antiviral antibody to Rubella, Measles, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), adenovirus, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), different incidence of seropositivity have been found, according to the virus assayed. Interestingly all patients were seropositive to rubella virus with high titres compared to data obtained from normal age matched population. These data indicate that in Sarcoidosis an altered antibody response of post-primary type can be found.

Human viruses in sediments, sludges, and soils.

Recent studies have provided a greater understanding of the movement of viruses in the environment by their attachment to solids. These studies have focused on solids-associated viruses present in wastewater discharged into the ocean and on viruses in sludge and wastewater that may be retained in soil following their land disposal. Such ocean or land disposal of wastewater and sludge may result in a discharge of one or more of 120 human enteric virus pathogens including those causing poliomyelitis, viral hepatitis A and acute gastroenteritis.Solids-associated viruses in effluents discharged in…

Monkeypox virus as a source of whitepox viruses.

Monkeypox virus cloning and isolation of the so-called 'white' clones from white pocks which this virus forms on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) were carried out. The isolated clones were stable and differed considerably from the parental strain. By their properties, they were identical to whitepox viruses formerly isolated from wildlife monkeys and rodents in Equatorial Africa. Besides stable 'white' clones, a number of virus cultures in the process of cloning were obtained which differed in quantitative content of virions, forming on CAM white pocks and pocks with hemorrhages. It appeared…

[Oncogeny of herpes simplex viruses and lupidon].

The part of the herpes simplex virus type 2 in the development of the cervex carcinoma of women is still an open question. After the serological findings that patients with cervix carcinoma have a higher rate of antibodies against type 2 than healthy women, which were initially published with great expectation, the molecular-virological examinations which were meanwhile carried out by several work groups to find traces of the herpes simplex virus type 2 in the carcinoma cells were negative, except some few but not confirmed cases. Hitherto but the results of transformation of embryonic hamster
