Stereopsis in normal domestic cat, Siamese cat, and cat raised with alternating monocular occlusion.

Normal cats, cats raised with alternating monocular occluders, and Siamese cats were tested for stereoscopic vision using a shadow-casting technique that produced line stereograms. Human subjects were tested with the same apparatus. 1. Normal cats had stereoscopic vision, but AO and Siamese cats did not. 2. Normal AO cats, and Siamese cats all had equal visual activity (about 6 feet of arc) and all could make accurate judgments about the depth of real objects. 3. Normal cats could fuse crossed disparities as great as 50 feet of arc and uncrossed disparities as great as 30 feet of arc. 4. Norma

Missed Intraocular Foreign Body Presenting As Siderosis Bulbi: Two Case Reports.

Ocular siderosis bulbi is a rare but significant cause of vision impairment in patients with a retained ferrous intraocular foreign body (IOFB). In this report, we present two cases of ocular manifestations suggestive of siderosis bulbi. Both cases presented with a significant reduction in vision and were found to have a dense cataract, a small healed corneal scar, and siderotic pigments in the anterior chamber. The first case denied any past ocular injury, yet CT scans confirmed the presence of an IOFB. The second case, who had a high suspicion of ocular trauma, did not have a radiologically

Orbital apex syndrome secondary to Sweet syndrome.

Sweet syndrome (SS), or acute febrile neutrophilic dermatosis, is a dermatologic, auto-inflammatory disorder of unclear origin, often accompanied by systemic inflammation affecting various tissues, including the eyes. Common ocular manifestations include conjunctivitis but can extend to other ocular tissues. Orbital apex syndrome (OAS) involves damage to several cranial nerves transversing the orbital apex, leading to ophthalmoplegia and vision loss. This case report describes a rare case of OAS secondary to SS. A woman in her 50s with a history of SS presented with right eye loss of vision an

A Novel Vision-Enhancing Technology for Low-Vision Impairments.

Ocular disorders such as vitreoretinal pathologies are widespread, especially in older adults. In particular, degenerative diseases of the retina such as macular senile degenerations are on the rise and affect millions of people with hundreds of thousands of new cases each year. These diseases can cause profoundly disabling visual impairments, in some cases severely compromising the central and/or the peripheral vision in one or both eyes. In this paper, we present a novel vision aids technology that allows for correcting or attenuating the perception of visual field defects due to ocular path

Surgical repair of an inflammatory macular hole associated with ocular syphilis.

PURPOSE: To describe a case of an inflammatory macular hole associated with ocular syphilis and its successful surgical closure. OBSERVATIONS: A 55-year-old man presented with count fingers vision and was found to have unilateral ocular syphilis with panuveitis and a foveal subretinal lesion. The inflammation quickly resolved with treatment, but he developed a full-thickness macular hole on day 5. A pars plana vitrectomy with membrane peel and intraocular gas was performed three months later. The macular hole was successfully closed, and the patient's vision improved to 20/200 18 months after

Oscillopsia in "inverse latent" infantile nystagmus syndrome.

PURPOSE: A possibly unique individual with infantile nystagmus syndrome presented with incessant oscillopsia but good stereopsis when viewing binocularly; her nystagmus was greatly reduced with left eye occlusion. We have attempted to explain this and to identify an intervention that preserves binocular vision while maximizing perceptual stability. CASE REPORT AND METHODS: Eye movements were recorded and analyzed for duration of foveation (% time when the target was on or near the fovea and the eye was moving at < or = 4 degrees /sec) under different viewing conditions. Changes in foveation w

Ophthalmic evaluation, treatment, and follow-up of two cases of incontinentia pigmenti.

Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) is an X-linked dominant disorder affecting the skin, teeth, eyes, and central nervous system. Ocular changes are common and may lead to severe vision loss. We report on the ocular manifestations in two young girls with IP, with emphasis on the asymmetry of this condition in both eyes and associated retinal problems. The outcomes of laser treatment of the ischemic peripheral retina were good and resulted in stability of vision.

Gravitational Influence on Intraocular Pressure: Implications for Spaceflight and Disease.

Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) describes a series of morphologic and functional ocular changes in astronauts first reported by Mader and colleagues in 2011. SANS is currently clinically defined by the development of optic disc edema during prolonged exposure to the weightless (microgravity) environment, which currently occurs on International Space Station (ISS). However, as improvements in our understanding of the ocular changes emerge, the definition of SANS is expected to evolve. Other ocular SANS signs that arise during and after ISS missions include hyperopic shifts,

Visual changes secondary to initiation of amiodarone: a case report and review involving ocular management in cardiac polypharmacy.

BACKGROUND: Amiodarone is a benzofuran derivative used to treat cardiac arrhythmias. The most-common ocular symptom is colored rings around lights. Common ocular findings include comeal micro-deposits and lens opacities. An amiodarone optic neuropathy has been described. Digoxin is a cardiac glycoside used to treat cardiac arrhythmias and heart failure. It is known to cause dyschromatopsia, visual disturbances, and visual-field defects. Digoxin serum levels and toxicity risks increase with the addition of amiodarone. CASE REPORT: Soon after initiation of amiodarone HCl (200 mg/day), a 76-year

Evaluating the scotopic visual sensitivity of walleye (Sander vitreus) and implications for foraging habitat.

Understanding the physiological limits of visual detection is essential for delineating habitat use in freshwater fishes. Walleye (Sander vitreus), a crepuscular predator with well-documented low-light foraging capabilities, exhibits visual adaptations suited for dim environments. Using electroretinography (ERG), we determined the scotopic spectral sensitivity of adult S. vitreus and modeled their potential visual foraging depth under a range of optical conditions. Peak spectral sensitivity occurred between 500-550 nm, aligning with wavelengths that penetrate mesotrophic systems most effective

Turning the world upside down: reversal-of-vision metamorphopsia in a patient with syncope.

An elderly man with recurrent syncope was admitted with a globe rupture following a syncopal attack. After an initial unremarkable evaluation, the patient reported inversion of the room's wall clock during a bedside evaluation. This symptom is called reversal-of-vision metamorphopsia (RVM) and is a rare visual disturbance that typically results from organic processes localised to the retina and/or posterior cortex of the brain or in some cases is psychogenic in nature. In this case, both the syncope and RVM were caused by impaired circulation in the posterior cortex, and management included an

Visual experience shapes the Bouba-Kiki effect and the size-weight illusion upon sight restoration from congenital blindness.

The Bouba-Kiki effect is the systematic mapping between round/spiky shapes and speech sounds ("Bouba"/"Kiki"). In the size-weight illusion, participants judge the smaller of two equally-weighted objects as being heavier. Here we investigated the contribution of visual experience to the development of these phenomena. We compared three groups: early blind individuals (no visual experience), individuals treated for congenital cataracts years after birth (late visual experience), and typically sighted controls (visual experience from birth). We found that, in cataract-treated participants (tested

Residual vision activation and the brain-eye-vascular triad: Dysregulation, plasticity and restoration in low vision and blindness - a review.

Vision loss due to ocular diseases such as glaucoma, optic neuropathy, macular degeneration, or diabetic retinopathy, are generally considered an exclusive affair of the retina and/or optic nerve. However, the brain, through multiple indirect influences, has also a major impact on functional visual impairment. Such indirect influences include intracerebral pressure, eye movements, top-down modulation (attention, cognition), and emotionally triggered stress hormone release affecting blood vessel dysregulation. Therefore, vision loss should be viewed as the result of multiple interactions within

Effect of levodopa treatment on contrast sensitivity in Parkinson's disease.

We studied contrast sensitivity function in 10 parkinsonian patients before and after levodopa treatment. Pretreatment contrast sensitivity function was abnormal in 16 of the 20 eyes. After treatment, only high-frequency loss was observed in 6 eyes. All other types of deficit disappeared under treatment. These changes of contrast sensitivity function following treatment suggest that dopamine is a functional transmitter in the visual pathways.

On the significance of heterophoria for stereoscopic vision.

This study was undertaken to explain the possible correlation between heterophoria and stereopsis because, in the literature, there are different opinions. The subjects were 806 recruits. They were trained as rangefinder men, of whom a perfect stereopsis is required. The permitted maximal limits of heterophoria were 1 prism diopter (PrD) vertically, of esophoria 5 PrD, and of exophoria 6 PrD. Soldiers wit abnormal stereopsis, myopia, hyperopia more than 1.75, or astigmatism over 0.50 diopters, were omitted. The heterophoria was tested with Herschel's prism to 5 m distance. The stereoscopic vis

Population study of fixation disparity, heterophoria, and vergence.

Data on phorias, vergences, and fixation disparities were gathered for distant and near viewing conditions from a nonclinical, young adult population. Normative values were computed from the data for analysis and comparison. Our study revealed slightly less exophoria at far and near than Morgan's study, together with large base-out vergence readings. We found proportionately more esophores with exo fixation disparity who require base-in prism to neutralize the fixation disparity than Ogle's studies found.
