GAX-collagen in the human vocal fold.

A report is presented of the first histological study of GAX-collagen injected into the human vocal cord. The study concerns a specimen from an arytenoidectomy performed 28 months after injection. As it had already been the case in the animal, the excellent integration of GAX-collagen with the host-tissues has been noted, as well as the stability of the result more than 2 years later. It also appeared that colonization of GAX-collagen by the host cells is less rapid than for the ZCI. While inflammatory reaction is weak in the region of the GAX-collagen, there is to be seen some atrophy and fib

Androgens modulate song effort and aggression in Neotropical singing mice.

Androgens are an important class of steroid hormones involved in modulating the expression and evolution of male secondary sex characters. Vocalizations used in the context of aggression and mate attraction are among the most elaborate and diverse androgen-dependent animal displays as reflected in a rich tradition of studies on bird song and anuran calls. Male Alston's singing mice (Scotinomys teguina) commonly emit trilled songs that appear to function in male-male aggression. In this study, we experimentally manipulated androgens in singing mice to assess their role in modulating aggression

Comparison of concentric needle versus hooked-wire electrodes in the canine larynx.

BACKGROUND: The use of a specific electrode type in laryngeal electromyography has not been standardized. Laryngeal electromyography is usually performed with hooked-wire electrodes or concentric needle electrodes. Hooked-wire electrodes have the advantage of allowing laryngeal movement with ease and comfort, whereas the concentric needle electrodes have benefits from a technical aspect and may be advanced, withdrawn, or redirected during attempts to appropriately place the electrode. OBJECTIVES: This study examines whether hooked-wire electrodes permit more stable recordings than standard co

Fentanyl causes naloxone-resistant vocal cord closure: A platform for testing opioid overdose treatments.

BACKGROUND: High doses of the synthetic opioid fentanyl cause rapid and sustained vocal cord closure (VCC) leading to airway obstruction that prevents overdose victims from breathing. This airway effect is not caused by morphine-derived opiates (e.g. heroin), is distinct from respiratory depression, resistant to naloxone, and can be lethal. However, VCC has not been previously included in animal models of opioid overdose. METHODS: Video laryngoscopy was used to monitor vocal cord movement in anesthetized Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats were administered saline, fentanyl (5, 25, or 50 μg/kg) or morp

Effects of dietary phytase and sex on behavioral responses in castrated male and female piglets.

This study investigated whether adding phytase to the diet of castrated male and female piglets modulates behavior and if the response differs between sexes. The experiment involved 126 piglets, weaned at 21 days of age, with an average weight of 6.53 ± 1.29 kg. Six treatments were employed, with seven replications and three animals per pen. The treatments were PC: positive control diet - adequate nutritional levels and without phytase; NC: negative control diet - reduced levels of nutrients and metabolizable energy, and without phytase; negative control diets with 500; 1.000; 1.500 and 2.000

Neurobehavioral assessment of BMEDA by modified Irwin test in Sprague-Dawley rats.

The neurobehavioral assessment of N,N-bis(2-mercapatoethly)-N',N'-diethylenediamine (BMEDA), which can form a chelate with rhenium-188 (188Re) to produce the 188Re-BMEDA-liposome, was evaluated. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential neurobehavioral changes by using the functional observational battery observation procedures when intravenous injection of BMEDA to Sprague-Dawley rats. Rats were administered BMEDA at dose levels of 1, 2, and 5 mg/kg. No mortalities were observed. There are some observations related to BMEDA treatment found in the 5 mg/kg dose group at 10 min pos

Compound Motor Action Potential Measures Acute Changes in Laryngeal Innervation.

OBJECTIVE: Vocal fold paralysis is caused by injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN). Current clinical measures of laryngeal innervation are often nonquantitative. Compound motor action potentials (CMAP) measure motor innervation. The goal of this study was to determine whether CMAP can quantify laryngeal innervation following acute nerve injury. STUDY DESIGN: Animal study. METHODS: Twelve canine hemilaryngeal preparations were used. The RLN was serially stimulated with increasing intensities until the nerve was maximally stimulated. The CMAP amplitude was measured for each intensity s

Pre-clinical evaluation of a minimally invasive laryngeal pacemaker system in mini-pig.

Microlaryngoscopic enlargement techniques have been the standard treatment for bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP) for decades. Laryngeal pacing is a promising alternative treatment based on the electrostimulation of the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle. This paper reports on the results of a pre-clinical study aiming to evaluate this method. Eight Göttingen mini-pigs were implanted with a laryngeal pacemaker (LP) implant prototype and with two LP electrodes, one in each PCA muscle. The 6-week follow-up included endoscopic stimulation controls in general anaesthesia and radiographic con

Effects of perinatal octylphenol on ultrasound vocalization, behavior and reproductive physiology in rats.

A rodent diet containing paraffin wax was designed to administer the environmental estrogen octylphenol (OP) to nonpregnant, pregnant and lactating rats. The estrogenic activity of OP via this diet was first confirmed in ovariectomized adult animals: 20 mg OP/kg/day increased the mitoses in the vaginal epithelium, and 60 mg OP/kg/day stimulated mitoses in the uterine luminal epithelium. The effects on a variety of reproductive and nonreproductive parameters were then investigated in the offspring of dams fed OP (100-250 mg/kg/day during gestation and lactation). A number of modest reproductive

Stimulation electromyography as a method of intraoperative identification of the recurrent laryngeal nerve in thyroid surgery.

INTRODUCTION: The iatrogenic injury of the recurrent laryngeal nerve during thyroid surgery still represents a major problem because of the great physiologic and psychologic trauma to the patients. The incidence of this complication ranges between 1% and 15% depending on the thyroid pathology and type of surgery. AIM: To evaluate the potential of stimulation electromyography as a method of intraoperative prophylaxis of iatrogenic injuries of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Intraoperative monitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve based on stimulation electromyography, w

The expiration reflex from the vocal folds.

The authors present their 30 years' experience with expiration reflex. The reflex can be elicited from vocal folds by mechanical, chemical or electrical stimulation of the superior laryngeal nerve of man and laboratory animals, except mice and rats. It manifests itself by a short, forcible expiratory effort without a preceding inspiration which is indispensable for cough effort. The role of expiration reflex is to prevent penetration of foreign bodies into airways, expelling phlegm and detritus from subglottal area. The initial inspiration before expiration is undesired and could lead to inspi

Different endogenous analgesia systems are activated by noxious stimulation of different body regions.

Noxious pinch of the neck and the base of the tail can produce equipotent analgesia as measured by the tail flick method. However, noxious stimulation of the neck can suppress pain responsiveness both at the site of stimulation and at sites remote from the stimulated area while noxious stimulation of the tail produces analgesia only at sites remote from the stimulated area. Thus, neck pinched animals are immobile and completely unresponsive to the noxious pinch whereas pinch to the base of the tail, which results in tail flick suppression, causes vocalization and well organized biting behavior

Ferret Behavior Medicine.

Domestic ferrets (Mustela putorius furo) are common zoologic companion animals and display specific body language and vocalizations. Social interactions, play behavior, and resting periods are important keystone in domestic ferret behavior. Specific housing and environmental enrichment are recommended to preserve the expression of normal behavior and physiology in ferrets. Presence of abnormal behaviors, including aggression, urination and defecation outside the litter box, stereotypies, and absence of play behavior, should be carefully monitored by veterinarians and ferret owners to assess fe

Evolution of vocal learning and spoken language.

Although language, and therefore spoken language or speech, is often considered unique to humans, the past several decades have seen a surge in nonhuman animal studies that inform us about human spoken language. Here, I present a modern, evolution-based synthesis of these studies, from behavioral to molecular levels of analyses. Among the key concepts drawn are that components of spoken language are continuous between species, and that the vocal learning component is the most specialized and rarest and evolved by brain pathway duplication from an ancient motor learning pathway. These concepts

Incidence, clinical signs, and videofluoroscopic swallow study abnormalities associated with airway penetration and aspiration in 100 dogs.

BACKGROUND: Videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) utilizing penetration-aspiration (P-A) scoring assesses airway protection in people. On VFSS, penetration (ingesta or secretions immediately cranial to the vocal folds) and aspiration (material caudal to the vocal folds) are associated with increased risk of lung injury in people. Penetration-aspiration (P-A) scoring has been validated in animal models, but the incidence of P-A, clinical signs (CS), and dysphagic disorders associated with P-A in dogs are unknown. OBJECTIVES: Using VFSS, identify the incidence of P-A, compare CS between dogs

Sperm collection by transrectal ultrasound-guided massage of the accessory sex glands is less stressful than electroejaculation without altering sperm characteristics in conscious goat bucks.

In anesthetized non-domestic ruminants transrectal ultrasound-guided massage of the accessory sex glands (TUMASG) is an alternative method to collect semen slightly less stressful than electroejaculation (EE). However, some sperm characteristics are better when semen is collected with EE than with TUMASG. As anesthesia reduces the response to stressors, the advantages of TUMASG may be reduced in anesthetized animals, and thus, TUMASG may be even more advantageous in conscious animals. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to compare the stress response and the characteristics of the sper

D-Cycloserine ameliorates social alterations that result from prenatal exposure to valproic acid.

Prenatal exposure to valproic acid (VPA) alters rodent social interactions in a dose-dependent way: exposure to a high dose of VPA (>500 mg/kg) mid-gestation decreases social interactions whereas a moderate dose of VPA (350 mg/kg) increases peer-directed social behavior. The moderate dose also decreases expression of the mRNA for serine in amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex. In this study, we examined whether d-cycloserine could ameliorate VPA-induced alterations in ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), social interactions, and locomotor activity. Pregnant Sprague Dawley rats were given intraperinto

Humpback whales match song production to dive patterns.

Understanding the function and origin of a complex animal display requires a holistic study of its performance. For example, movement is linked to sound production1,2,3,4,5,6 by enhancing or biomechanically facilitating displays,7,8 exploiting additional sensory channels,9,10 or affecting signal development and perception.1,11,12 Among animal displays, humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) song is remarkable for its hierarchical structure, syntax, and cultural transmission,13,14,15,16,17,18,19 but it has been challenging to study the whole performance. The role of ultrasonic vocalizations in rat laryngological investigations.

Rat ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs) have traditionally been used in psychosocial and psychobiological studies to understand emotion, social behavior, cognition, and associative learning. However, recent studies have expanded the goal of USVs to include the study of the laryngeal system and the effects of disease processes on vocal sensorimotor control. Without the foundational understanding of the goals of this area of laryngological research, fundamental differences in study objectives between psychobehavioral and laryngological studies can easily be missed, leading to misconceptions and misi

Nonlinear vocal phenomena in African penguin begging calls: occurrence, significance and potential applications.

African penguins (Spheniscus demersus) extensively use high-frequency food solicitation signals (begging calls) to request food from parents. We studied the occurrence of nonlinear vocal phenomena (NLP) in begging calls in 91 hand-reared penguin chicks at the Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds. For each chick, we recorded the begging calls daily, from the hatching of wild abandoned eggs to the release of the chicks into the wild approximately three months later. We found that most (70%) of begging calls contain NLP. The most frequently observed are sidebands (54.
