A waste audit on different nebulization practices to treat respiratory conditions in the ICU.

BACKGROUND: Aerosolized medications are frequently administered through nebulization to treat respiratory conditions. Vibrating mesh nebulizers (VMN) are preferred over junction emission technology (JET) nebulizers (JN) in providing effective treatment. They potentially differ in environmental impact due to differences in product and medicine waste. AIM: To quantify waste related to nebulization by JN and VMN to determine the most sustainable nebulization option in the ICU. METHODS: A waste audit was performed in the ICU of Erasmus University Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The f

[Hygienic aspects of the impact of solid waste disposal sites on the habitat].

The "Dmitrovsky" solid garbage (SG) ground is one of the largest enterprises of this kind in the Moscow Region. A total of 200,000-750,000 tons of solid garbage (91%) and industrial waste products (9%) annually come to the ground. A total of 5,500,000 tons of garbage and waste products have been accumulated since it was put into operation. From the accumulated SG deposits, iron, manganese, beryllium, titanium, barium, boron, petroleum products enter the surface and underground waters, methane, carbon oxide, ammonia, toluene, xylene, hydrogen sulfide, cresol, phenol come into the atmospheric ai…

Cerebrospinal Fluid-Mediated Brain Clearance: Insights from Human Studies.

Clearance of waste products from brain metabolism and by-products of brain injury is a fundamental aspect of normal brain function. Impaired clearance may cause accumulation of proteins and other substances that are harmful to the brain. Abnormal protein aggregation due to clearance failure is a hallmark of neurodegenerative and dementia diseases. Cerebral clearance processes rely on multiple mechanisms; in recent years, it has become increasingly evident that brain fluids, primarily by the exchange of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and interstitial fluid, are essential for removing cerebral waste …

Covalent-Organic Framework-Manipulated Multi-Reactant Activation Enables Polystyrene Electrodegradation in Tandem With Over-Oxidation Product Upgrading.

Polystyrene (PS) waste is exceptionally difficult to chemically degrade under environmental conditions, and the high-value utilization of low-value C1 products generated during the process has never been achieved. Herein, we constructed a metalloporphyrin-anthracene sp2 covalent-organic framework (COF) electrocatalyst, TAPP-FeIII-An, which displays high structural stability and outstanding capability in activating O2 and multi-reactants. This enables it to effectively electro-degrade PS into high-value benzoyl products (yield, 23.2%, Mw residue 0.3%) and re-convert 20% of C1 products into high

The geochemically-analogous process of metal recovery from second-hand resources via mechanochemistry: An atom-economic case study and its implications.

In the context of recycling metal to embrace the sustainability challenge, this work proposes a geochemically-analogous process of metal recovery through mechanochemistry for the first time, to avoid the limitations of on-going methods and to establish an innovative technology philosophy. This work systematically investigates this geochemically-analogous process, to keep it green and to generalize it further. Copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs), a typical copper-rich waste, is chosen as a case study in this work. Nearly 98% of the copper in the WPCBs can be recycled in th

Oil products and high-performance carbon materials from biomass-plastic co-liquefaction for sodium-ion capacitors.

The increasing accumulation of agricultural residues and plastic waste is widely recognised as a critical waste management challenge, while simultaneously offering opportunities for integrated resource recovery. This study proposes a zero-waste valorisation pathway that converts these waste streams such as cotton gin trash (CGT), sugarcane trash (ST), and rice husk (RH) together with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) into value-added fuels and materials via supercritical ethanol co-liquefaction. This process not only converted the mixed feedstock into energy-dense oil products (yields ∼23-25 wt%

Cryoprecipitate utilisation, shortages and institutional policies in the United States: A survey of practices and policies.

BACKGROUND: Since the COVID-19 pandemic, demand for blood products has remained high, while donations have declined. Institutional policies guiding the use of these products may affect their availability, utilisation and waste. We surveyed blood banks (BBs) in the United States (U.S.) to assess policies and practices related to cryoprecipitate compatibility and to characterise experiences with administration, shortages and waste. METHODS: An 11-question online survey was distributed to U.S. BBs via Qualtrics. Responses were exported to Excel and analysed using descriptive statistics. Variable

A strategic recovery of value-added monomer from polycarbonate waste through catalytic pyrolysis on ultra-high porous MgO.

The huge generation of plastic waste has become significant environmental problem. For environmentally sustainable plastic waste management, thermochemical recycling of widely used plastic waste such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyethylene terephthalate have vigorously studied. However, development of proper recycling process for other types of plastic waste is required. In this study, a thermo-catalytic treatment was applied for recovery of value-added monomers and gaseous products from polycarbonate (PC). The systematic study investigating the relationships between pyro

Environmental sustainability of nutrition support in a hospital setting: An observational study of waste reduction and management.

AIMS: Healthcare systems contribute significantly to the global environmental footprint, and hospital food services have been identified as having a significant impact. However, existing sustainability studies auditing the food supply chain in the hospital setting have excluded nutrition support. This study aims to quantify the waste associated with oral, enteral, and parenteral nutrition support in a major tertiary-referral hospital and to identify ways to improve waste management. METHODS: This observational audit investigated the types of waste and waste disposal methods associated with nu

A review on sustainable management of hazardous, non-hazardous, and chemo-waste in the pharmaceutical sector and its correlation with UNSDGs 3, 6, 9, and 11-15.

The pharmaceutical industry significantly contributes to healthcare advancements and the global economy, generating approximately $50 billion annually. However, it also produces around 200,000 tons of pharmaceutical waste per year, including active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and chemical by-products, which pose serious environmental and health risks. India, a major pharmaceutical producer, exports 40% of the world's generic drugs but struggles to manage an estimated 50,000 tons of pharmaceutical waste annually. Current waste management practices remain insufficient, with only 30% of pha

Adjustable Upcycling of Polyethylene Terephthalate to Biodegradable Polymer Monomers by Mn-Catalyzed Solvent Switching Strategy.

Waste plastics represent a new resource for the chemical industry. In this study, we demonstrate a solvent-switching strategy to upcycle waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) into monomer terephthalic acid (TPA) and key bulk feedstocks for biodegradable polymers, such as lactic acid (LA) or glycolic acid (GA). PET undergoes rapid and mild depolymerization into its monomers TPA and ethylene glycol (EG) under the catalysis of a manganese complex. When methanol (MeOH) is used as the solvent, it undergoes selective dehydrogenative coupling with in situ generated EG, efficiently yielding TPA and L

Valorizing the Unexplored Filtration Waste of Brewing Industry for Green Silver Nanocomposite Synthesis.

The brewing industry generates a substantial amount of by-products rich in polyphenols, carbohydrates, sugars, sulfates, nitrogen compounds, organic carbon, and several elements, including chlorine, magnesium, and phosphorus. Although limited quantities of these by-products are used in fertilizers and composts, a large amount is discarded as waste. Therefore, it is crucial to identify different ways of valorizing the by-products. Research regarding the valorization of the brewery by-products is still in its nascent stage; therefore, it still has high potential. Herein, we report the valorizati

Analysis: the impact of needle, syringe, and lancet disposal on the community.

There are over 7.5 billion needles and syringes used outside of the health care system each year by individuals with diabetes, migraines, allergies, infertility, arthritis, HIV, hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, psoriasis, or other conditions. Disposal of needles, syringes, lancets, and other medical products are not regulated in the home, while these same products used in health care facilities are strictly regulated. Home-generated medical waste is routinely placed into curbside trash, placing sanitation workers and custodial personnel at personal risk of a needle-stick injury. Th

A rapid method for the determination of brominated flame retardant concentrations in plastics and textiles entering the waste stream.

Due to new European legislation, products going to waste are subject to 'low persistent organic pollutant concentration limits'. Concentrations of restricted brominated flame retardants in waste products must be determined. A rapid extraction and clean-up method was developed for determination of brominated flame retardants in various plastics and textiles. The optimised method used vortexing and ultrasonication in dichloromethane followed by sulfuric acid clean-up to determine target compounds. Poly-brominated diphenyl ethers were determined by gas chromatography with mass spectrometry and he…

Survey of cataract surgeons' and nurses' attitudes toward operating room waste.

In an online survey of more than 1300 cataract surgeons and nurses, 93% believed that operating room waste is excessive and should be reduced; 78% believed that we should reuse more supplies; 90% were concerned about global warming; and 87% wanted medical societies to advocate for reducing the surgical carbon footprint. The most commonly cited reasons for excessive waste were regulatory and manufacturer restrictions on reuse or multiple use of devices, supplies, and pharmaceuticals. More than 90% believed that profit, liability reduction, and failure to consider carbon footprint drive manufact

Waste-derived and recycled shape-memory polymers and composites: feedstocks, processing, performance, and circularity challenges.

Shape-memory polymers and polymer composites can recover a programmed shape in response to external stimuli and have been investigated for applications including actuators, sensors, adaptive structures, and 4D printing. The majority of well-established systems use virgin petrochemical feedstocks, which has prompted interest in waste-derived and recycled alternatives. This review examines waste-derived and recycled shape-memory polymers and polymer composites prepared from plastic waste, agricultural residues, industrial by-products, e-waste, and waste cooking oil. Feedstocks are distinguished

NO reduction via reburning of MSW pyrolysis volatiles in cement precalciners.

Cement co-processing of municipal solid waste (MSW) has been widely recognized as a promising waste management strategy. Given the substantial NOx emissions from cement industries and the well-established NOx reduction potential of hydrocarbon reburning, this study proposed a novel approach using MSW pyrolysis volatiles as a reburning fuel in cement precalciners, enabling both waste valorization and emission reduction. To confirm the applicability of this approach, the effects of pyrolysis parameters, reaction temperature, gas compositions, and cement raw meal were experimentally investigated

Microbiological degradation of pesticides in yard waste composting.

Changes in public opinion and legislation have led to the general recognition that solid waste treatment practices must be changed. Solid-waste disposal by landfill is becoming increasingly expensive and regulated and no longer represents a long-term option in view of limited land space and environmental problems. Yard waste, a significant component of municipal solid waste, has previously not been separated from the municipal solid-waste stream. The treatment of municipal solid waste including yard waste must urgently be addressed because disposal via landfill will be prohibited by legislatio
