Deciphering the water quality impacts of COVID-19 human mobility shifts in estuaries surrounding New York City.

The COVID-19 pandemic altered human mobility, particularly in large metropolitan areas. In New York City (NYC), stay-at-home orders and social distancing led to significant decreases in commuting, tourism, and a surge of outward migration. Such changes could result in decreased anthropogenic pressure on local environments. Several studies have linked COVID-19 shutdowns with improvements in water quality. However, the bulk of these studies primarily focused on short-term impacts during shutdown periods, without assessing longer-term impacts as restrictions eased. Here, we examine both concurren…

Compound effect of land reclamation and land-based pollutant input on water quality in Qinzhou Bay, China.

Based on a three-dimensional hydro-biogeochemical model, the compound and individual impacts of two types of human activities, i.e., land reclamation and land-based pollutant input, on coastal water quality were studied. In Qinzhou Bay (QZB), China, a total of 38.90 km2 of tidal flat was reclaimed between 2004 and 2019, and the Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) in the wastewater was reduced by over 40%. However, the Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) was increased by above 40%, and the Dissolved Inorganic Phosphorus (DIP) was increased by about 17%, leading to the continuous deterioration of water …

Improving earthworm quality and complex metal removal from water by adding aquatic plant residues to cattle manure.

Vermicomposting is an economical and environmentally friendly process. However, related knowledge of vermicomposting aquatic plant residues (APRs), earthworm quality, and mechanisms for metal removal from water is still lacking. Nelumbo and Oenanthe javanica residues and their mixture were treated with Eisenia foetida and cattle manure for 45 days. Compared with the control comprising only cattle manure, addition of the APR mixture improved earthworm quality, mainly for low crude ash, high alkaloid compounds and different fat compositions in the Nelumbo residue and the balanced protein proport

Influence of different dispersants on rheological behaviors of coal water slurry prepared from a low quality coal.

To improve the efficiency of the gasification or combustion process of coal water slurry (CWS), it is significant to optimize the rheological properties and increase the solid concentration of CWS. Particularly, preparing CWS from low quality coal remains a peculiarly intriguing subject due to the large reserve and low price of low quality coals in China and very successful industrial applications of CWS all over the world. In this work, refined coal particles were obtained by applying an improved fine particle flotation method on a low quality coal. The refined coal used for CWS preparation h

Iron stability on the inner wall of prepared polyethylene drinking pipe: Effects of multi-water quality factors.

Iron is currently one of the main contaminants of drinking water. The inner walls of drinking pipes can cause iron to release in water chemistry, which alters the water quality, including its chloride, sulfate, bicarbonate, pH, and humic acid (HA) levels. Hence, the goal of this research was to improve our understanding of the multi-water quality factors affecting iron release in polyethylene pipes. An array of bench-scale experiments were conducted exposing model water with different concentrations of chloride, sulfate, bicarbonate, HA, and different pH levels to prepared polyethylene pipes f…

Multiple-endpoints gene alteration-based (MEGA) assay: A toxicogenomics approach for water quality assessment of wastewater effluents.

Wastewater effluents contain a significant number of toxic contaminants, which, even at low concentrations, display a wide variety of toxic actions. In this study, we developed a multiple-endpoints gene alteration-based (MEGA) assay, a real-time PCR-based transcriptomic analysis, to assess the water quality of wastewater effluents for human health risk assessment and management. Twenty-one genes from the human hepatoblastoma cell line (HepG2), covering the basic health-relevant stress responses such as response to xenobiotics, genotoxicity, and cytotoxicity, were selected and incorporated into…

Are harmful algal blooms becoming the greatest inland water quality threat to public health and aquatic ecosystems?

In this Focus article, the authors ask a seemingly simple question: Are harmful algal blooms (HABs) becoming the greatest inland water quality threat to public health and aquatic ecosystems? When HAB events require restrictions on fisheries, recreation, and drinking water uses of inland water bodies significant economic consequences result. Unfortunately, the magnitude, frequency, and duration of HABs in inland waters are poorly understood across spatiotemporal scales and differentially engaged among states, tribes, and territories. Harmful algal bloom impacts are not as predictable as those f…

Synthesis of high-quality water-soluble near-infrared-emitting CdTe quantum dots capped with 3-mercaptobutyric acid.

Highly fluorescent CdTe quantum dots (QDs) with emission in red to near-infrared (NIR) wavelength were successfully prepared by using 3-mercaptobutyric acid (3MBA) as capping agent. The maximum of quantum yield (QY) could reach up to 82% for QDs with emission peak at 686 nm and FWHM of 66 nm at optimal conditions. The QY of these QDs could maintain above 65% in the 650-750 nm region and QDs with emission over 800 nm were still strong fluorescent (28-41%). These optical properties of CdTe quantum dots are among the best results prepared by the state-of-the-art methods, suggesting their promisin

Water quality disruptions following an extreme flood: Microbial and geochemical responses to the 2024 DANA in a Mediterranean wetland.

In late October 2024, an extreme Isolated Depression at High Levels (DANA) caused widespread flooding and the failure of wastewater treatment and sewerage systems across several municipalities in the Valencia region (Spain). A six-month monitoring program was conducted in Albufera Natural Park and the Poyo and Picassent gullies. Microbiological fecal indicators (Escherichia coli, somatic coliphages, and viral markers) showed an immediate response to the flooding, indicating substantial inputs of untreated wastewater. Although most indicators declined over time, several remained above pre-event

Water quality trends in river catchments draining to the Great Barrier Reef: an analysis of ∼40 years of data.

Analysis of water quality trends in river catchments provides critical insights into the influence of climate, landscape/land use change and management drivers thereby informing evidence-based policy interventions. Long-term water quality datasets from nine monitoring sites across the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) catchment of northeastern Australia were carefully curated and analysed using Generalised Additive Mixed Models (GAMMs) to identify both long-term (∼linear) and episodic (non-linear) trends in dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and suspended sediment (SS) concentrations. The GAMMs approac…

A dynamic framework for assessing water quality resilience in urban rivers and its application to low-impact development.

Urban rivers are facing severe water quality fluctuations and prolonged recovery challenges due to stormwater runoff pollution amid rapid urbanization and climate change. This study proposes a dynamic water quality resilience assessment framework by coupling the Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) with a completely mixed river model. Grounded in system performance curve theory, the framework integrates a failure index with nonlinear penalty coefficients to quantify exceedance magnitude, duration, and the full response-recovery trajectory, from resistance and absorption to restoration, thereby …

Remote sensing and in situ observations of harmful algal blooms in dongzhang reservoir: implications for water quality management.

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) cause significant ecological damage and public health issues in freshwater reservoirs globally. While in situ sampling is essential for monitoring HABs, it is often costly and time-consuming. Remote sensing offers a rapid and cost-effective alternative for detecting HABs. This study integrates Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery with in-situ observations to monitor HABs in Dongzhang Reservoir, Fujian, China. We analyzed the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and Normalized Difference Chlorophyll Index (NDCI) to monitor chlorophyll-a concentrations in this dynamic w

Statistical evaluation of trends of water quality monitoring parameters relevant to cyanobacterial blooms in the urban tropical reservoir.

The accelerated growth of cyanobacteria in water bodies is a global critical environmental issue caused by continuous discharges of effluents into the environment that are rich in phosphorus and nitrogen. So, cyanobacteria have found propitious conditions for proliferation, provoking significant ecological imbalances. Cyanobacteria produce cyanotoxins, which are harmful to life, and compounds like 2-methylisoborneol and geosmin that affect water's taste and odor. This study analyzed a long-term database of important environmental parameters from a tropical reservoir in São Paulo State, Brazil.

The impact of combined sewer outflows on urban water quality: Spatio-temporal patterns of fecal coliform in indianapolis.

Many urban waterways with older stormwater drainage systems receive a significant amount of untreated or poorly treated waste from Combined Sewer Outflow (CSO) systems during precipitation events. The input of effluent waste from CSO to urban water streams during storm events often leads to elevated fecal coliform, specifically Escherichia Coli (E. Coli) in these waterways. The aim of the study is to examine fecal coliform concentration, water chemistry, and water quality parameters to better understand spatio-temporal patterns of fecal coliform associated with CSO events in three waterways fr…
