Time of day, time of sleep, and time on task effects on sleepiness and cognitive performance of bus drivers.

PURPOSE: Optimal cognitive performance might prevent vehicle accidents. Identifying time-related circadian and homeostatic parameters having an impact on cognitive performance of drivers may be crucial to optimize drivers' performance. METHODS: In this prospective study conducted on bus drivers, two drivers alternated driving during a 24-h round trip and were accompanied by an interviewer. Each driver was tested using Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) and the reversed digit span Wechsler Working Memory test before the start of his shift and then every 6 h during a "work/driving" day. Magnetic seizure therapy for treatment-resistant depression.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic seizure therapy (MST) is a potential alternative to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Reports to date on use of MST for patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) are limited. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of MST in comparison with sham-MST, antidepressant, and other forms of electric or magnetic treatment for adults with TRD. SEARCH METHODS: In March 2020, we searched a wide range of international electronic sources for published, unpublished, and ongoing studies. We handsearched the reference lists of all included studies and relevant systematic reviews an

Dysbindin gene variability is associated with cognitive abnormalities in first-episode non-affective psychosis.

INTRODUCTION: Dystrobrevin-binding protein 1 gene (dysbindin or DTNBP1) has been associated with schizophrenia and cognitive performance. Its expression in areas implicated in cognition such as the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, as well as its role in dopaminergic and glutamatergic system, has been replicated by several studies. The main aim of this study was to examine the association between DTNBP1 variability and cognitive performance in a sample of 238 patients with a first episode of a non-affective psychosis. METHODS: Patients, and a comparison sample of 47 healthy subjects, completed

Association of retinal arteriolar dilatation with lower verbal memory: the Edinburgh Type 2 Diabetes Study.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Retinal vascular calibre changes may reflect early subclinical microvascular disease in diabetes. Because of the considerable homology between retinal and cerebral microcirculation, we examined whether retinal vascular calibre, as a proxy of cerebral microvascular disease, was associated with cognitive function in older people with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of 954 people aged 60-75 years with type 2 diabetes from the population-based Edinburgh Type 2 Diabetes Study was performed. Participants underwent standard seven-field binocular digital retinal

Working memory and visual discrimination distraction tasks improve cold pressor pain tolerance in children.

OBJECTIVE: Distraction is a well-established pain management technique for children experiencing acute pain, although the mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of distraction are not well understood. It has been postulated that engagement of executive functions, such as working memory, may be a critical factor in attenuating pain via distraction. To test this hypothesis, we compared a 1-back task requiring engagement of working memory with a simple visual discrimination task demanding focused attention, but lower cognitive load (0-back). METHOD: Seventy-nine children (6-12 years old) underw

Prolonged reversible amnesia: a case report.

A 55-year-old woman sustained an acute amnesia that lasted for 8 days. The results of a cerebral magnetic resonance imaging scan and an electroencephalogram were normal. A Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised (WMS-R) test performed 6 days after the event showed global impairment in every domain, except for attention/concentration. A single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) scan taken 8 days after the event showed hypoperfusion in the left temporal and frontal areas. The results of a follow-up SPECT scan on the 40th day after the episode were normal. A second WMS-R test showed some improveme

Altered mismatch response of inferior parietal lobule in amnestic mild cognitive impairment: A magnetoencephalographic study.

BACKGROUND: Mismatch negativity (MMN) reflects the functional integrity of sensory memory function. With the advantages of independence of individual's focused attention and behavioral cooperation, this neurophysiological signal is particularly suitable for investigating elderly with cognitive decline such as amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). However, the existing results remain substantially inconsistent whether these patients show deficits of MMN. In order to reconcile the previous disputes, the present study used magnetoencephalography combined with distributed source imaging metho

Development of a Brief Screen to Detect Cognitive Impairment in Older Adults: The QuickSort.

BACKGROUND: Sorting tests detect cognitive decline in older adults who have a neurodegenerative disorder, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Although equally effective at detecting impairment as other cognitive screens (e.g. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE)), sorting tests are not commonly used in this context. This study examines the QuickSort, which is a new brief sorting test that is designed to screen older adults for cognitive impairment. DESIGN: Observational cohort study. SETTING: General community and inpatients, Australia. PARTICIPANTS: Older (≥60 years) community-dwe

Altered amygdala and hippocampus function in adolescents with hypercortisolemia: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study of Cushing syndrome.

Chronic elevations of endogenous cortisol levels have been shown to alter medial temporal cortical structures and to be accompanied by declarative memory impairments and depressive symptoms in human adults. These effects of elevated endogenous levels of cortisol have not been directly studied in adolescents. Because adolescents with Cushing syndrome show endogenous elevations in cortisol, they represent a unique natural model to study the effects of prolonged hypercortisolemia on brain function, and memory and affective processes during this developmental stage. Using functional magnetic reson

Left hemisphere strategies in visual recognition, topographical orientation and time planning.

Right hemisphere lesions are known to impair, in many cases, visual recognition and visuospatial orientation. We report here on the compensatory strategies used by a patient whose posterior part of the right hemisphere was either destroyed or visually deafferented. She presented a slight appreceptive agnosia, memory disorders, and severe topographical disorientation. Her strategy relied on detail-by-detail analysis of buildings for recognition and on identification of landmarks and memorization of their sequences for finding routes. Time planning was impaired; the patient was unable to use a b
