Influence of space flight on red blood cells.

Losses of red blood cell mass (RCM) averaging 10-15% have been observed consistently in astronauts after space flight; postflight recovery o … e etiology, biological mechanisms, and potential operational significance are inadequately defined. Weightlessness is probably the primary cause; however, contributory factors may include hypokinesia/hypodynamia, bone loss, muscle atrophy, altered hemodynamics, stress, and metabolic disturbances. Space medical specialists consider other possible influences such …

[Effects of lower body negative pressure in the first and last week during 21 d head-down bed rest on orthostatic tolerance and cardiac function].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the changes of orthostatic tolerance and cardiac function during 21 d head-down tilt (HDT) bed rest and effect of lower body negative pressure (LBNP) in the first and the last weeks in humans. METHOD: Twelve healthy male volunteers were exposed to -6 degrees HDT bed rest for 21 d. Six subjects received -30 mmHg LBNP sessions for 1 h/d from the 1st to the 7th day and from the 15th to the 21st day of the HDT, and the other six who did not receive LBNP served as control. Orthostatic tolerance was assessed by means of standard tilt test. The cardiac pumping function and

Advantages and disadvantages of fludrocortisone or saline load in preventing post-spaceflight orthostatic hypotension.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of saline load to fludrocortisone (florinef) as countermeasures for reduced plasma volume and orthostatic intolerance after spaceflight. Eleven males (ages 30-50 yr) underwent a 3-day ambulatory baseline period followed by 7 days of 6 degrees head-down bedrest, during which cardiopulmonary and arterial baroreflex sensitivity and plasma volume (PV) were determined. During pre-bedrest and 2.5 h after treatment on day 8, PV was also measured and subjects underwent a 15-min unsupported stand test. Treatments consisted of 8 salt tablets (1

3D biofabrication and space: A 'far-fetched dream' or a 'forthcoming reality'?

The long duration space missions across the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) often expose the voyagers to an abrupt zero gravity influence. The severe … oprinting technology can enhance their clinical applicability. Additionally, the regulatory role of weightlessness condition on the underlying cellular signaling pathways governing tissue morphogenesis has been critically discussed. This information will provide future directions on how 3D biofabrication can be used as a plausible tool for healing on-flight chro …

Tandem Walk in Simulated Martian Gravity and Visual Environment.

Astronauts returning from long-duration spaceflights experience visual-vestibular conflicts that causes motion sickness, perceptions that the environment is moving when it is not, and problems with walking and other functional tasks. To evaluate whether astronauts will have similar decrements after they land on Mars following exposure to weightlessness, participants were held by a device that offloads their weight, first entirely (0 G), and then partially (0.38 G) or not at all (1 G). Tandem (heel-to-toe) walk on a medium-density foam surface was used to assess the subject's walking performanc…

However, reduced vestibular stimulations and slower motions in weightlessness, as well as constant references to their timeline and work schedule could also account for the change in the estimation of time by the astronauts in space.

Smooth Muscle Actin as a Criterion for Gravisensitivity of Stomach and Jejunum in Laboratory Rodents.

Smooth muscle tissue (SMT) is one of the main structural components of visceral organs, acting as a key factor in the development of adaptive and pathological conditions. Despite the crucial part of SMT in the gastrointestinal tract activity, the mechanisms of its gravisensitivity are still insufficiently studied. The study evaluated the content of smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) in the membranes of the gastric fundus and jejunum in C57BL/6N mice (30-day space flight), in Mongolian gerbils Meriones unguiculatus (12-day orbital flight) and after anti-orthostatic suspension according to E.R. Visually induced reorientation illusions.

It is known that rotation of a furnished room around the roll axis of erect subjects produces an illusion of 360 degrees self-rotation in many subjects. Exposure of erect subjects to stationary tilted visual frames or rooms produces only up to 20 degrees of illusory tilt. But, in studies using static tilted rooms, subjects remained erect and the body axis was not aligned with the room. We have revealed a new class of disorientation illusions that occur in many subjects when placed in a 90 degrees or 180 degrees tilted room containing polarised objects (familiar objects with tops and bottoms).

Disorientation of animals in microgravity.

Disorientation responses of animals exposed to microgravity produced by parabolic aircraft flights and also in-space experiments were reviewed. Disoriented postures in floating are largely species-dependent. Reflexive lowered tone of gravity-bearing extensor muscles by labyrinthectomy is not seen in mammals (hamster and monkey) and frog, though dorsiflexion of the neck and the trunk is not so remarkable in hamster and monkey as in frog. In weightlessness, fundamental vestibular reflexes may be affected (righting reflex in cat), but coordinated performance can be easily compensated by visual fu…

Microgravity reshapes bacteriophage-host coevolution aboard the International Space Station.

Bacteriophage-host interactions play a fundamental role in shaping microbial ecosystems. While extensively studied on Earth, their behavior in microgravity remains largely unexplored. Here, we report the dynamics between T7 bacteriophage and Escherichia coli in microgravity aboard the International Space Station (ISS). Phage activity was initially delayed in microgravity but ultimately successful. We identified de novo mutations in both phage and bacteria that enhanced fitness in microgravity. Deep mutational scanning of the phage receptor binding domain revealed striking differences in the nu

A systematic mapping review of studies reporting the effects of spaceflight on cardiovascular outcomes.

This systematic review aimed to characterize the landscape of cardiovascular research in the context of spaceflight and its Earth-based analogs. In collaboration with subject matter experts from the Ames Life Science Data Archive Analysis Working Group, we developed targeted search terms for spaceflight-related exposures and specific cardiovascular outcomes. A team of librarians translated these terms into structured search strategies across Ovid Medline, Embase, and CINAHL, yielding 18,837 records after deduplication. Screening was completed in collaboration with citizen scientists from the S

Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS): expert consensus on diagnosis and management.

Spaceflight-associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS) is a disorder primarily characterised by changes in the eye and optic nerve, but changes in brain features are also noted after spaceflight. SANS is caused by exposure to prolonged microgravity and at least one feature of SANS has been reported in 81% of National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) astronauts. Early clinical features of SANS are observed in almost all individuals undergoing spaceflight, with the condition exacerbated by the duration of spaceflight. Knowledge of the features of SANS and the aetiology has rapidly grown

Thymus ad astra, or spaceflight-induced thymic involution.

Spaceflight imposes a constellation of physiological challenges-cosmic radiation, microgravity, disrupted circadian rhythms, and psychosocial stress-that critically compromise astronaut health. Among the most vulnerable organs is the thymus, a cornerstone of immune system functionality, tasked with generating naive T cells essential for adaptive immunity. The thymus is particularly sensitive to spaceflight conditions, as its role in maintaining immune homeostasis is tightly regulated by a balance of systemic and local factors easily disrupted in space. Cosmic radiation, an omnipresent hazard b

From aging to space: A comparative biology of skeletal muscle degeneration.

Sarcopenia, the progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass and function with age, represents a major clinical concern, particularly in the context of disuse and unloading conditions such as simulated microgravity. This review explores the molecular, cellular, and physiological responses of skeletal muscle to simulated microgravity and compares them with those observed during aging-associated sarcopenia. A central focus is placed on impaired excitation-contraction coupling, altered calcium homeostasis, and dysregulation of signalling pathways critical for muscle maintenance. Simulated microgravit

Aging and putative frailty biomarkers are altered by spaceflight.

Human space exploration poses inherent risks to astronauts' health, leading to molecular changes that can significantly impact their well-being. These alterations encompass genomic instability, mitochondrial dysfunction, increased inflammation, homeostatic dysregulation, and various epigenomic changes. Remarkably, these changes bear similarities to those observed during the aging process on Earth. However, our understanding of the connection between these molecular shifts and disease development in space remains limited. Frailty syndrome, a clinical syndrome associated with biological aging, h

Simulated Microgravity Accelerates Alloy Corrosion by Aspergillus sp. via the Enhanced Production of Organic Acids.

Metal corrosion caused by Aspergillus sp. was shown to be significantly enhanced on a space station, but its mechanism is still unknown. To simulate this on earth, the corrosion capability of A. carbonarius on five metal sheets was investigated under simulated microgravity. Also, the effect of metal ions on growth and organic acid production was determined. Results showed that A. carbonarius could corrode all five types of metal, including Ti alloy, aluminum alloy, iron, and aluminum and copper sheet, and the corrosion was intensified under simulated microgravity. Energy dispersive X-ray spect
