Climate change and respiratory disease: clinical guidance for healthcare professionals.

UNLABELLED: Climate change is one of the major public health emergencies with already unprecedented impacts on our planet, environment and health. Climate change has already resulted in substantial increases in temperatures globally and more frequent and extreme weather in terms of heatwaves, droughts, dust storms, wildfires, rainstorms and flooding, with prolonged and altered allergen and microbial exposure as well as the introduction of new allergens to certain areas. All these exposures may have a major burden on patients with respiratory conditions, which will pose increasing challenges fo…

Environmental Risk Factors for Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome.

Several environmental exposures increase susceptibility to the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Specifically, chronic exposure to ambient air pollution, cigarette smoke, and alcohol "prime" the lung via epithelial injury, endothelial dysfunction, and immunomodulatory mechanisms, increasing the risk and severity of ARDS following an array of acute insults. Future research of these pathways may reveal therapeutic targets. Relevant emerging threats, such as electronic cigarettes and vaping, wildfire smoke, and the environmental hazards associated with climate change, may also be associ

Affective integration in climate change communication: recency effects and negativity bias in responses to climate picture sequences.

This research explored climate pictures as affect-eliciting stimuli, and how the affective experiences can have an impact on pro-environmental intentions. In an online within-subject design experiment (N = 464), participants engaged in twelve experimental trials, each containing one picture of a wildfire, one of a forest, and one depicting a pro-environmental action, presented in various orders. Following each trial, participants rated their affective experiences and pro-environmental intentions. The results indicated that affective valence (positive-negative experience) was sensitive to the p

Weathering the ride: Associations of heat, smoke, precipitation, and ozone with bus ridership in Colorado.

Weather and climate variability increasingly shape urban travel behavior, yet the short-term temporal dynamics and contextual modifiers of weather-transit relationships remain poorly understood. We analyzed system-wide hourly bus ridership in the Denver metropolitan area from June 2022 through September 2023 using fixed-effects negative binomial distributed lag nonlinear models with lags up to 24 h. Nonlinear exposure-response and lag-response functions were specified for hourly Universal Thermal Climate Index (UTCI) and precipitation, with additional indicators for daily ozone exceedance and

[The prion hypothesis and the human prion diseases].

Our understanding of the pathogenesis of the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE) has made terrific headway over the past 40 years and some scientists are even of the opinion that this group of diseases belongs to the neurodegenerative syndromes best understood. On the other hand, the investigation of TSE has led to a multitude of unexpected and surprising results and consequently has initiated impassioned discussions among scientists. Although the human forms of TSE are very rare, the wildfire-like spread of the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) raises the pressing question as

Climate change: a critical time for respiratory health.

Climate change has consistently been shown to result from human activity. The rise in average global temperature, driven by greenhouse gas emissions, has increased the frequency of extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, hurricanes, wildfires, and heat waves, as well as increasing airborne allergens and air pollution levels. These consequences have direct and indirect impacts on human health, particularly affecting individuals with cardiorespiratory disease. This review analyzed the main mechanisms whereby climate change impacts human health, with a focus on respiratory effects. Urgen…

Environmental factors and stroke: Risk and prevention.

Stroke is a leading cause of death and adult disability globally. In addition to traditional risk factors, environmental risk factors have emerged over the recent past and are becoming increasingly important. The disproportionate rise of stroke incidence in low- and middle-income countries has been attributed, at least in part, to environmental factors. This narrative review provides details on the interplay between the environment and health generally and stroke specifically, covering topics including air pollution, atmospheric brown clouds, desert dust storms, giant wildfires, chemical conta…

IoT-Enabled Wireless Sensor Networks for Air Pollution Monitoring with Extended Fractional-Order Kalman Filtering.

This paper presents the development of high-performance wireless sensor networks for local monitoring of air pollution. The proposed system, enabled by the Internet of Things (IoT), is based on low-cost sensors collocated in a redundant configuration for collecting and transferring air quality data. Reliability and accuracy of the monitoring system are enhanced by using extended fractional-order Kalman filtering (EFKF) for data assimilation and recovery of the missing information. Its effectiveness is verified through monitoring particulate matters at a suburban site during the wildfire season

Coccidioidomycosis: a growing global concern.

Coccidioidomycosis (CM) has been a recognized disease for about 130 years. The organisms (Coccidioides spp. fungi) inhabit desert soil in the southwestern USA, Mexico, and parts of Central and South America. Natural events such as dust storms, wildfires or outdoor activities including construction and gardening can disrupt the fungal arthroconidia, which easily become airborne and inhaled by the host. Approximately 60% of those exposed to arthroconidia are asymptomatic and do not require medical attention, but 30% show signs of pulmonary infection with symptoms ranging from a flu-like illness …

The global burden of climate-sensitive health impacts: a systematic review of mortality, morbidity, and economic costs.

Rising greenhouse gas emissions are intensifying heatwaves, wildfires, extreme rainfall, and sea-level rise, reshaping global health outcomes. However, the full multisystem burden remains insufficiently synthesized. This systematic review quantifies global climate-sensitive health impacts, identifies vulnerable populations, and evaluates adaptation strategies. We searched seven databases and grey literature (2000-2025), including studies linking climate exposures to health outcomes. Dual screening, risk-of-bias assessment (ROBINS-I, ROB 2), meta-analysis, meta-regression, and GRADE certainty g…

Cows as canaries: The effects of ambient air pollution exposure on milk production and somatic cell count in dairy cows.

Exposure to air pollution, including criteria pollutants such as fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3), has been associated with morbidity and mortality in mammals. As a genetically homogenous population that is closely monitored for health, dairy cattle present a unique opportunity to assess the association between changes in air pollution and mammalian health. Milk yield decreases in the summer if temperature and humidity, measured by the Temperature Humidity Index (THI). As O3 levels increase with warmer temperatures, and summer PM2.5 may increase with wildfire smoke, dairy cows ma

The private well water climate impact index: Characterization of community-level climate-related hazards and vulnerability in the continental United States.

BACKGROUND: Private wells use groundwater as their source and their drinking water quality is unregulated in the United States at the federal level. Due to the lack of water quality regulations, those reliant on private wells have the responsibility of ensuring that the water is safe to drink. Where extreme weather is projected to increase with climate change, contamination due to climate-related hazards adds further layers of complexity for those relying on private wells. We sought to characterize community-level climate-related hazards and vulnerability for persons dependent on private wells
