BACKGROUND: Cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI) is a frequent and burdensome problem that is still insufficiently understood and managed. We investigated subjective and objective measures of CRCI, as recommended by the International Cancer and Cognition Task Force (ICCTF) in cancer patients prior to systemic or radiation therapy with respect to potential influencing or associated psychosocial, demographic, or lifestyle factors.
METHODS: Female patients with breast or gynecological tumors (n = 239, mean age = 55.5, SD = 11.6) prior to any systemic or radiation therapy completed validate

BACKGROUND: To examine the association between orthostatic hypotension (OH) and cognitive function in middle-aged adults.
METHODS: Participants were 12,702 men and women from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study. OH was defined as decrease in systolic blood pressure (BP) by > or =20 mm Hg or diastolic BP by > or =10 mm Hg upon standing. At the 2nd and the 4th follow-up examinations, cognitive function was assessed using the Delayed Word Recall Test, Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST) and Word Fluency Test (WFT).
RESULTS: After age adjustment, those with OH were more likely to be

BACKGROUND: Educational attainment is a key protective factor against late-life cognitive decline, yet whether its cognitive returns are heightened in resource-deprived rural environments remains controversial. We investigated whether rural-urban residency moderates the association between education and cognitive function among older Chinese adults.
METHODS: Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS; N = 15,646), cognitive function was operationalized via episodic memory (word recall, 0-20). Hierarchical ordinary least squares (OLS) and linear mixed-effects mo

BACKGROUND: Dyslexia-a learning disorder characterized by difficulty in word-level reading skills-can negatively impact nursing students' practice, which can, in turn, affect patient safety. Individuals with dyslexia are often stigmatized. There is a need to explore dyslexia awareness among nursing students and its relationship with stigma in Saudi Arabia.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the dyslexia awareness levels among nursing students and its relation to stigma.
METHODS: A quantitative cross-sectional study was conducted on 154 nursing students at King Abdulaziz University, Saudi

Dyslexia is characterized by a deficit in language processing which mainly affects word decoding and spelling skills. In addition, children with dyslexia also show problems in mathematics. However, for the latter, the underlying structural correlates have not been investigated. Sixteen children with dyslexia (mean age 9.8 years [0.39]) and 24 typically developing children (mean age 9.9 years [0.29]) group matched for age, gender, IQ, and handedness underwent 3 T MR diffusion tensor imaging as well as cognitive testing. Tract-Based Spatial Statistics were performed to correlate behavioral data

While our previous work suggests that the midazolam-induced memory impairment results from the inhibition of new association formation, little is known about the neural correlates underlying these effects beyond the effects of GABA agonists on the brain. We used arterial spin-labeling perfusion MRI to measure cerebral blood flow changes associated with the effects of midazolam on ability to learn arbitrary word-pairs. Using a double-blind, within-subject cross-over design, subjects studied word-pairs for a later cued-recall test while they were scanned. Lists of different word-pairs were studi

BACKGROUND: Neurocognitive deficits have been well documented in patients with schizophrenia. Research has shown that a significant proportion of patients with schizophrenia have co-morbid obsessive-compulsive symptoms/disorder (OCS/OCD). However, the impact of OCS/OCD on various neurocognitive domains in patients with schizophrenia is less understood.
METHODS: 40 patients with schizophrenia and comorbid OCD (Group-I) were matched with 39 patients with schizophrenia without OCD (Group-II) and were assessed on Trail making test A and B (TMT-A/B), Controlled Oral Word Association test (COWA), S

Wernicke's area has been assumed since the 1800s to be the primary region supporting word and sentence comprehension. However, in 2015 and 2019, Mesulam and colleagues raised what they termed the 'Wernicke conundrum', noting widespread variability in the anatomical definition of this area and presenting data from primary progressive aphasia that challenged this classical assumption. To resolve the conundrum, they posited a 'double disconnection' hypothesis: that word and sentence comprehension deficits in stroke-based aphasia result from disconnection of anterior temporal and inferior frontal

The region containing ROBO1 (Chromosome 3p12.3) has been implicated as a susceptibility gene for reading disorder and language deficit by translocation and linkage data. No association studies have yet been reported supporting any candidate gene. Here we report the first association of this gene with language deficits, specifically with phonological buffer deficits (a phenotype implicated in language acquisition, Specific Language Impairment and Speech Sound Disorder) and dyslexia (reading and spelling ability traits) in an unselected sample of adolescent twins and their siblings. BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has emerged as an established treatment for severe aortic stenosis in elderly patients. Periprocedural cerebral embolic events are common and may contribute to subtle neurocognitive changes. Conventional neurocognitive assessments are time-consuming and resource-intensive, limiting their routine use. Digitalized, app-based testing with AI-assisted recording may offer a feasible alternative. This study aimed to evaluate the use of app-based cognitive screening with AI-assisted recording in elderly TAVI patients and, building on prior pi

Purpose Patient education materials (PEMs) enhance healthcare access and inclusivity, particularly for individuals without clinical backgrounds. However, many PEMs exceed recommended readability levels. This study evaluated whether artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted editing using ChatGPT-4o (OpenAI, San Francisco, CA, USA) could improve the readability of endourology PEMs related to prostate cancer, nephrolithiasis, bladder cancer, and kidney cysts. Methods Twenty-one publicly available PEMs from the American Urological Association (AUA) were analyzed. Each document was uploaded into ChatGP

Neurocognitive deficits in fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome (FXTAS) involve attentional control, working memory, executive functioning, and declarative and procedural learning. To date, no studies comparing FXTAS with other dementias have been done. We characterize the dementia in FXTAS, comparing it with Alzheimer's disease. Retrospective chart review of 68 adults (50 men, 18 women) with FXTAS. 20 men with FXTAS dementia were matched by age, gender, and education to patients with mild Alzheimer's dementia (AD). Neuropsychological measures were compared between the two groups: Bosto

This study investigated whether specific academic deficits were associated with attention-deficit disorder (ADD) subtypes. Twenty students (ages 8-12) with attention-deficit disorder with hyperactivity (ADD/H) were compared to 20 students with attention-deficit disorder without hyperactivity (ADD/noH). Group differences were compared using a MANCOVA, and paired t tests were used to compare within-group differences. Dependent variables for the within-group differences were four achievement subtest scores from the Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery-Revised: Letter-Word Identification, P

INTRODUCTION: Reading disorders in Parkinson's disease (PD) are poorly evaluated due to the lack of validated tests to screen for them. They are often attributed to hand tremors associated with the disease. In this study, we evaluated the "alouette test" validated for dyslexia screening, in PD by comparing the results to healthy patients.
METHODS: The "alouette test" was conducted on a fixed surface to avoid errors related to tremor. A fixation and tracking test were then performed. All the tests were filmed to be analyzed later by 2 examiners blinded to the neurological diagnosis.
RESULTS:

Event-related potential (ERP) studies of the human brain have shown that object categories can be reliably distinguished as early as 130-170 ms on the surface of occipito-temporal cortex, peaking at the level of the N170 component. Consistent with this finding, neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies suggest major functional distinctions within the human object recognition system, particularly in hemispheric advantage, between the processing of words (left), faces (right), and objects (bilateral). Given these observations, our aim was to (1) characterize the differential response propertie

Memory is subject to dynamic changes, sometimes giving rise to the formation of false memories due to biased processes of consolidation or retrieval. Sleep is known to benefit memory consolidation through an active reorganization of representations whereas acute sleep deprivation impairs retrieval functions. Here, we investigated whether sleep after learning and sleep deprivation at retrieval enhance the generation of false memories in a free recall test. According to the Deese, Roediger, McDermott (DRM) false memory paradigm, subjects learned lists of semantically associated words (e.g., "nig
