A study was conducted in a screen printing plant to determine the exposure of workers to isophorone and other organic solvents. One hundred twenty-four charcoal tube samples were collected from both workers breathing zones and various workplace areas. Sampling times were 50-90 minutes. Maximum mean TWACs of isophorone and cyclohexanone were 23 +/- 5.4 ppm and 28 +/- 5 ppm, respectively, at the breathing zones of printing press workers. Respiratory disease is a leading cause of morbidity in people with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and also occurs in the golden retriever muscular dystrophy (GRMD) model. We have previously shown that adult GRMD dogs have elevated expiratory flow as measured non-invasively during tidal breathing. This abnormality likely results from increased chest and diaphragmatic recoil associated with fibrosis and remodeling. OBJECTIVE: To utilize low-cost and simple methods to assess airway and lung inflammation biomarkers related to air pollution.
METHODS: A total of 87 male, non-smoking, healthy subjects working as street traffic-controllers or office-workers were examined to determine carbon monoxide in exhaled breath and to measure the pH in nasal lavage fluid and exhaled breath condensate. Air pollution exposure was measured by particulate matter concentration, and data were obtained from fixed monitoring stations (8-h work intervals per day, during the 5 consecutive days prior to the study).

In the present work we propose a new nonlinear coupled 1D model to describe lung ventilation and the transport and diffusion of both oxygen and carbon dioxide in the bronchial tree through the blood. Personal air exposures and exhaled breath concentrations of 20 volatile organic compounds were measured for 198 smokers and 322 non-smokers in 5 U.S. cities (1980-84). Smokers showed significantly increased breath concentrations of six hydrocarbons: benzene, styrene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, m + p-xylene, and octane. Homes with smokers had higher indoor air concentrations of the same compounds than homes without smokers during fall and winter. Passive smokers exposed at work had significantly higher levels of benzene and other aromatics in their breath than unexposed non-smokers.

Pituitary adenylate cyclase-activating peptide (PACAP) is an important mediator of the stress response and is crucial in maintaining breathing in neonates. BACKGROUND: Reverse triggering (RT) is a dyssynchrony defined by a respiratory muscle contraction following a passive mechanical insufflation. It is potentially harmful for the lung and the diaphragm, but its detection is challenging. Magnitude of effort generated by RT is currently unknown.
