This literature review explored the experiences of workers with on-the-job injuries, and the effect of psychosocial factors on their abilities to return to work. Four common themes were discovered frustration, depression, discrimination, and obstacles in understanding how the workers compensation system works and in obtaining care. Dupuytren's disorder is considered a genetic disorder and therefore not covered under workers' compensation. Personal risk factors include workers of Northern European descent and workers that are older than 50 years. However, new evidence has shown that certain occupational activities may increase the risk of developing this disorder. This article is a review of the literature with a case study. Work-related and personal risk factors are explored, as well as interventions and return to work recommendations.

INTRODUCTION: RTC burden is commonly measured using fatality or hospitalisation statistics. However, non-fatal and less severe injuries contribute substantial economic and human costs, including work absence. In Victoria, Australia, two major compensation systems provide income support to employed people injured in RTCs; workers' compensation (if RTC occurred during work) and an RTC-specific compensation system. Soft tissue injury in the workmans' compensation patient population has been previously poorly understood. Injuries that do not show up easily on radiographs are often undertriaged and undertreated. With the advent of improved imaging techniques, an enhanced understanding of soft tissue injuries has evolved over the past few years. Monetary compensation for occupational hearing loss in the U.S.A. is governed by at least 57 different state and federal systems. Costs of compensation are difficult to estimate. Most U.S. jurisdictions use the 1979 AMA Method, based on pure-tone thresholds, to determine the amount of compensation. Clinical data and epidemiological models can provide useful estimates of the relative contributions of occupational noise exposure, aging, and other causes.
