BACKGROUND: Workplace violence is a serious and problematic phenomenon in health care settings. Research shows that health care workers are at the highest risk of such violence. The aim of this study was to address the frequency of physical violence against Iranian health personnel, their response to such violence, as well as the contributing factors to physical violence.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2011, in which 6500 out of 57,000 health personnel working in some teaching hospitals were selected using multi-stage random sampling. Data were collected using…

Physical violence against nurses has become an endemic problem affecting nurses in all settings. The purpose of this study was to describe acts of physical violence against emergency nurses perceived as stressful using a qualitative descriptive design with a national sample of emergency nurses. The guiding conceptual model for the study was the Ecological Occupational Health Model of Workplace Assault. Narrative accounts of physical violence were analyzed using a constant comparative analysis method. Key findings included risks related to employee, workplace, and aggressor factors, and descrip

BACKGROUND: Intensive care units constitute one of the most stressful working environments for healthcare workers, and workplace violence represents a significant occupational risk in these units. Violence is not limited to physical harm alone; it negatively impacts nurses' psychosocial well-being, performance and the quality of care.
AIM: This study aims to examine experiences of workplace violence conceptualised as 'invisible wounds' in intensive care units using a mixed methods approach with a sample of intensive care nurses.
STUDY DESIGN: This study used a mixed methods design, combining…

UNLABELLED: The objective of this study was to investigate emergency nurses experiences and perceptions of violence from patients and visitors in US emergency departments (EDs).
BACKGROUND: The ED is a particularly vulnerable setting for workplace violence, and because of a lack of standardized measurement and reporting mechanisms for violence in healthcare settings, data are scarce.
METHODS: Registered nurses members (n=3,465) of the Emergency Nurses Association participated in this cross-sectional study by completing a 69-item survey.

Psychiatric nurses are frequent victims of workplace violence, much of which is perpetrated by patients. In a review of literature on prevalence, perpetrators, and impact of violence on psychiatric nurses, we note that workplace violence is a virtually normative experience for the nurse, rather than a rare occurrence. Verbal violence and sexual harassment, like physical violence, are common experiences; in contrast to physical violence, these are often initiated by co-workers. The emotional impact of violence on psychiatric nurses is studied less often than frequency of exposure; we discuss hy…

INTRODUCTION: The ward atmosphere in closed psychiatric wards significantly influences nurses' well-being and quality of care. However, the formation mechanisms of ward atmosphere perceptions remain underexplored, and previous research has largely overlooked individual heterogeneity in how nurses perceive different dimensions of the ward environment. This study aims to identify distinct profiles of ward atmosphere among psychiatric nurses in closed wards and examine the predictive effects of physical environmental factors and workplace violence on profile membership.

Violence in emergency medical services (EMS) presents a critical issue, yet data on its extent and on effective preventative measures are lacking. We aim to explore violence experiences and opportunities for prevention from the actor-centered perspective of EMS workers in Bavaria, Germany. We conducted a questionnaire-based online survey of EMS workers (September 2023-January 2024), comprising standardized items and open questions on experiences and perceptions of workplace violence. In this context, we collected data on requested preventive measures. Mixed-methods analysis was applied, includ…

Little is known about how patterns of workplace bullying contribute to the negative effects of lifetime violence. Analysis of longitudinal data from a study of women's health after separating from an abusive partner revealed that 76% of 229 women had experienced workplace bullying. Workplace bullying was associated with child sexual abuse, adult sexual assault, and ongoing partner abuse. Timing was critical, with those experiencing past workplace bullying having poorer health and fewer personal and social resources than those experiencing none, ongoing, or past and ongoing bullying. Lifetime s
