No Check We Won't Write: A Report on the High Cost of Sex Offender Incarceration.

Child sexual abuse is a preventable public health problem that is addressed primarily via reactive criminal justice efforts. In this report, we focus on the cost of incarcerating adults convicted of sex crimes against children in the United States. Specifically, we summarize publicly available information on U.S. state and federal prison and sex offender civil commitment costs. Wherever possible, we used government data sources to inform cost estimates. Results indicate the annual cost to incarcerate adults convicted of sex crimes against children in the United States approaches $5.4 billion.

[Issues of diagnostic and therapeutic use of transcranial magnetic stimulation in patients with writing cramp].

OBJECTIVE: To study diagnostic and therapeutic values of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in writing cramp (WC). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twelve right-handed patients with WC were enrolled in the study. All patients underwent low-frequency repetitive TMS (rTMS) of the premotor cortex of contralateral to affected hand hemisphere. The clinical efficacy was assessed using the Writer's Cramp Rating Scale (WCRS) and the Medical Outcomes Study-Short Form (MOS-SF-36). Before and after last rTMS session, motor mapping of Abductor pollicis brevis muscle (APB) was performed using navigated TMS (nTM…

Reading and writing difficulties in third- and sixth-grade students: a cross-sectional survey.

BACKGROUND: In Southern Italy and, specifically, in the region of Campania, many surveys show that the average of students with reading difficulties is much higher than in northern Italy and abroad. On the other hand, specific learning disorders (SLDs) in Campania are much less certified. Since there are no etiological reasons that can explain this apparent inconsistency, an objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the extent of reading/writing difficulties in students from a province of Campania and then to assess the ability of teachers to identify such difficulties in their s…

Effects of Learning Strategy Training on the Writing Performance of College Students with Asperger's Syndrome.

Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are increasingly entering institutions of higher education. However, many are not prepared for the academic and social demands of postsecondary environments. Although studies have evaluated academic and social interventions for children and adolescents with ASD, little research exists on the college population. The current study utilized a multiple baseline across participants design to evaluate the effectiveness of a writing learning strategy on the writing performance of three college students with ASD. Results indicated that the quality of wr…

Writing tremor secondary to ischemic stroke: a report on a case with a remarkable response to topiramate.

UNLABELLED: Writing tremor (WT) is a task-specific tremor that occurs only or mostly while writing with the dominant hand. Secondary cases are extremely uncommon. We report on a patient who, after developing a WT after an ischemic stroke, had a remarkable response to topiramate (TPM). CASE: A 65-year-old right-handed man with a history of arterial hypertension, dyslipidemia, and coronary heart disease presented dizziness and headache followed by a loss of consciousness and then a right hemiparesis. He regained his strength on the fifth day. Fourteen days after stroke, he developed a WT as wel…

Sensitive Training Through Body Awareness to Improve the Writing of Patients with Writer's Cramp.

The aim of this article is to evaluate if body awareness is important to improve the writing ability before using the splints. Twelve patients with writer's cramp were evaluated by a specialist in movement disorders. The Burke-Fahn-Marsden Scale (BFM), the Jedynak Protocol and the Analog Pain Scale were used. The rehabilitation training was administered over an eight-week period, in two phases of four weeks each, twice a week. Each session would last 60 minutes. A significant improvement was shown, not only in the motor, but also in the pain perception, through the BFM scale, the Jedynak Proto…

Case writing as a vehicle for promoting cultural competency: a retrospective, descriptive qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: A variety of approaches are available that provide cultural competency education for practicing physicians. There is, however, still a need for additional, innovative approaches that address continuing education and professional improvement regarding cultural competency for physicians after their training. OBJECTIVE: To assess the potential impact on established clinicians of writing an extended case narrative on cultural competency. METHODS: We conducted structured interviews of physician contributors (n = 14) to a book of cases on cultural competency. Authors were invited to co…

Reaching and writing movements: sensitive and reliable tools to measure genetic dystonia in children.

The aim of this study was to provide a quantitative assessment of pure dystonia in a group of children. Kinematic and muscular characteristics of unconstrained movements of the upper limb, reaching and writing, were investigated. During reaching, the distinguishing factors of dystonic movement were reduced velocity, loss of muscular activation focalization, and impairment of rest-movement modulation. Muscular parameters were able to linearly discriminate the different levels of severity. These results support the hypothesis that basal ganglia dysfunction is responsible for compromising the mot…

Neurocognitive stability in Asperger syndrome, ADHD, and reading and writing disorder: a pilot study.

Boys with Asperger syndrome (n=20), attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (n=20), and reading and writing disorder (n=20) were followed up and retested on several neuropsychological measures 1 to 2 years after initial assessments. Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III) Full Scale, Verbal, and Performance IQ scores remained stable for all diagnostic groups. Kaufman factors and 'fluid' and 'crystallized' abilities were also stable measures. Subtest stability over time, was slightly more variable. There was a tendency for the group with Asperger syndrome to deteriorate over time w…

Generative AI in K-12 creative writing instruction: A systematic review and narrative synthesis.

Generative AI is rapidly entering writing instruction in public education; however, a systematic, quality-appraised synthesis of its effects on K-12 students' creative writing is lacking. This review synthesises and critically appraises the empirical evidence, using a scaffolding-versus-substitution framework to distinguish AI-assisted performance from the development of students' own writing. We searched seven databases without language restrictions for 2020-2026, following PRISMA 2020. Risk of bias and methodological quality were assessed with ROBINS-I, RoB 2 and CASP, the certainty of evide…

Knowledge about writing influences reading: Dynamic visual information about letter production facilitates letter identification.

How are reading and writing related? In this study, we address the relationship between letter identification and letter production, uncovering a link in which production information can be used to identify letters presented dynamically. By testing an individual with a deficit in letter identification, we identified a benefit which would be masked by ceiling effects in unimpaired readers. In Experiment 1 we found that letter stimuli defined by the direction of dot motion (tiny dots within letter move leftward, background dots move rightward) provided no advantage over static letters. In Experi…

Writing Process Products in Intermediate-Grade Children With and Without Language-Based Learning Disabilities.

PURPOSE: Difficulties with written expression are an important consideration in the assessment and treatment of school-age children. This study evaluated how intermediate-grade children with and without written language difficulties fared on a writing task housed within the Hayes and Berninger (2014) writing process framework. METHOD: Sixty-four children completed a writing task whereby they planned, wrote, and revised a narrative story across 3 days. Children had extended time to produce an outline, first draft, and final copy of their story. Language transcription approaches were used to ob…

Multicolor Fluorescence Writing Based on Host-Guest Interactions and Force-Induced Fluorescence-Color Memory.

A new strategy is reported for multicolor fluorescence writing on thin solid films with mechanical forces. This concept is illustrated by the use of a green-fluorescent pentiptycene derivative 1, which forms variably colored fluorescent exciplexes: a change from yellow to red was observed with anilines, and fluorescence quenching (a change to black) occurred in the presence of benzoquinone. Mechanical forces, such as grinding and shearing, induced a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transition in both the pristine and guest-adsorbed solids that led to a change in the fluorescence color (mechanofl…

Peripheral dysgraphia: dissociations of lowercase from uppercase letters and of print from cursive writing.

Clinical analyses of patients with acquired dysgraphia provide unique opportunities to understand the cognitive and neural organization of written language production. We report J.B., a 50-year-old woman with peripheral dysgraphia who had prominent dissociations in her ability to write in lowercase versus uppercase and print versus cursive. We gave J.B. a series of tasks that evaluated her skills at writing uppercase and lowercase print and cursive, spelling aloud and in writing, writing numbers and symbols, and visual letter recognition and imagery. She was impaired in printing letters, with …

Acquired dyslexia in three writing systems: study of a Portuguese-Japanese bilingual aphasic patient.

The Japanese language is represented by two different codes: syllabic and logographic while Portuguese employs an alphabetic writing system. Studies on bilingual Portuguese-Japanese individuals with acquired dyslexia therefore allow an investigation of the interaction between reading strategies and characteristics of three different writing codes. The aim of this study was to examine the differential impact of an acquired brain lesion on the reading of the logographic, syllabic and alphabetic writing systems of a bilingual Portuguese-Japanese aphasic patient (PF). Results showed impaired readi…

Bilateral mirror writing movements (mirror dystonia) in a patient with writer's cramp: functional correlates.

A recent prospective analysis on writer's cramp showed that up to 44.6% of patients in a series of 65 presented mirror dystonia, defined as involuntary movements of the resting hand, abnormal posture, tremor, and jerks occurring while writing with the opposite hand. A clinical case is presented, with videotape evidence of right-handed writer's cramp, with mirror movements elicited while writing using either hand. Functional magnetic resonance imaging studies are compared both to those of a normal patient and to those from a patient with writer's cramp but lacking mirror dystonia. Widespread bi…
