"It's not you, it's me": identity disturbance as the main contributor to interpersonal problems in pathological narcissism.

BACKGROUND: Core impairments in self and other functioning typify individuals with personality disorder. While interpersonal dysfunction is a known element of narcissistic disorders, empirical research investigating intrapersonal elements is lacking. The aim of this study was to investigate the internal representations of individuals with grandiose and vulnerable features, as manifested through their attachment styles, and the specific role of identity disturbance in explaining the relationship between pathological narcissism and maladaptive interpersonal functioning. METHODS: A sample of 270

The relationship between mood disorders, personality disorder and suicidality in adolescence: does general personality disturbance play a significant role in predicting suicidal behavior?

INTRODUCTION: Current research points to the importance personality pathology and Major Depression e as relevant psycopathological risk factors for understanding suicidal risk in adolescence. Literature has mainly focused on the role of BPD, however current orientations in personality pathological functioning suggest that BPD may be the representative of a general personality disturbance, a factor of vulnerability underlying diverse psychopathological variants and aspects of maladaptive functioning. However, recent studies seem to have neglected the contributions that other specific personalit

Maternal interpersonal problems and attachment security in adolescent offspring.

BACKGROUND: Research on parent-level factors linked to adolescent attachment security would inform interventions to prevent or reduce youth psychopathology and other negative outcomes. The current study examined one relevant parent-level variable: maternal interpersonal problems. Interpersonal problems, a key characteristic of personality pathology, are well described by the interpersonal circumplex (IPC) and have been shown to be associated with maladaptive adult attachment in close/romantic relationships; however, studies have not examined relationships with offspring attachment. Therefore,

Maladaptive personality traits as predictors of prosocial and trusting behavior in two economic games.

BACKGROUND: Dimensional models of personality disorders postulate interpersonal dysfunction as the core feature of personality pathology, and describe maladaptive personality traits that characterize the specific pattern of dysfunction that is experienced. Herein, we examined whether maladaptive traits predict prosocial and trusting behavior, both of which are highly relevant behaviors for interpersonal functioning. Specifically, we examined antagonism as a predictor of prosocial behavior in a dictator game, and suspiciousness as a predictor of trust in the faith game. MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Suicidal ideation, self-injury, aggressive behavior and substance use during intensive trauma-focused treatment with exposure-based components in adolescent and young adult PTSD patients.

BACKGROUND: Multiple traumata such as child sexual and/or physical abuse often result in complex psychopathologies and a range of associated dysfunctional behaviors. Although evidence-based interventions exist, some therapists are concerned that trauma-focused psychotherapy with exposure-based elements may lead to the deterioration of associated dysfunctional behaviors in adolescents and young adults. Therefore, we examined the course of suicidal ideation, self-injury, aggressive behavior and substance use in a group of abuse-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) patients during phase-b

Psychometric evaluation of the Estonian version of the Semi-structured Interview for Personality Functioning DSM-5 (STiP-5.1).

BACKGROUND: The DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders introduced a dimensional perspective on personality disorders. The model assesses functioning in four domains: Identity, Self-Direction, Empathy, and Intimacy. This study evaluates the psychometric properties of the Semi-Structured Interview for Personality Functioning DSM-5 (STiP-5.1) in Estonian. METHOD: The sample consists of 131 participants: 58 from the general population and 73 from a mixed clinical sample that is further divided into a mood and anxiety disorder sample and personality disorder sample. Examining emotion regulation in binge-eating disorder.

BACKGROUND: Inefficient mechanisms of emotional regulation appear essential in understanding the development and maintenance of binge-eating disorder (BED). Previous research focused mainly on a very limited emotion regulation strategies in BED, such as rumination, suppression, and positive reappraisal. Therefore, the aim of the study was to assess a wider range of emotional regulation strategies (i.e. acceptance, refocusing on planning, positive refocusing, positive reappraisal, putting into perspective, self-blame, other-blame, rumination, and catastrophizing), as well as associations betwee

Third-wave interventions for eating disorders in adolescence - systematic review with meta-analysis.

CONTEXT: Third-wave therapies have demonstrated efficacy as a treatment option for EDs in adulthood. Data on the suitability for EDs in adolescence are lacking. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the efficacy of third-wave interventions to reduce ED symptoms in adolescents in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and uncontrolled studies. DATA SOURCES: We systematically reviewed the databases PubMed (1976-January 2021), PsycINFO (1943-January 2021), and the Cochrane database (1995-January 2021) for English-language articles on third-wave therapies. Schema modes and their associations with emotion regulation, mindfulness, and self-compassion among patients with personality disorders.

BACKGROUND: The current study's goal was to examine the multivariate patterns of associations between schema modes and emotion regulation mechanisms in personality disorders. Schema modes are either integrated or dissociative states of mind, including intense emotional states, efforts to regulate emotions, or self-reflective evaluative thought processes. Exploring the multivariate patterns of a shared relationship between schema modes and emotion regulation strategies may lead to a better understanding of their associations and a deeper understanding of the latent personality profiles that org

Interpersonal emotion regulation and its relationship with the Big Five personality traits across two age groups: adolescents and adults.

BACKGROUND: Interpersonal emotion regulation (IER) refers to the use of social interactions to manage emotional experiences and plays an important role in psychological functioning across the lifespan. Although personality traits are known to influence emotion regulation, less is known about age-related differences in the use of IER strategies and how these strategies are associated with the Big Five personality traits among adolescents and adults. This study aimed to compare IER strategies between these two age groups and to examine their associations with personality traits within each group

Psychometric properties of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale- Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0) in women with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

BACKGROUND: Women with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are also often diagnosed with personality disorders, yet research on reliable and valid assessments of personality pathology in this population has been limited. METHODS: In this study, the psychometric properties of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale- Brief Form - 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0) were examined in a sample of 171 adult women with ADHD. RESULTS: A two-factor structure was identified, with one factor, LPF-self, comprised of six items, reflecting impairment in self functioning; the second factor, LPF-interpersonal,

How specific are affective and attachment instability to adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury? A comparison with adolescents with major depression.

BACKGROUND: Affective and interpersonal instability are suggested to underlie adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, previous research has not directly compared adolescents with NSSI to those with psychiatric conditions that are often, but not always, correlated with NSSI. We explored the specificity of affective and interpersonal instability to adolescent NSSI compared to depression. METHODS: Based on a clinical sample of 70 adolescents (56 female and 14 male), we compared a group with NSSI (n = 50) with a clinical comparison group diagnosed with major depression and no engageme

Dissociative symptoms during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic situation in mental health patients.

BACKGROUND: Dissociative symptoms arise in reaction to significant stress and are common in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). METHODS: We longitudinally investigated the course of dissociative symptoms in psychiatric patients over the first year of the SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) pandemic situation (04/2020-05/2021). The group was separated into patients with relevant symptoms of PTSD at study start (Group 1: PTSDG) and those without (Group 2: noPTSDG), and we also employed a control group (Group 3: CG). Dissociative symptoms were tracked using the "Frage

A laboratory task to assess epistemic mistrust: behavioral evidence for mediation between childhood trauma and borderline personality features in young adults.

BACKGROUND: Disruptions in epistemic trust have been recognised as key sequelae of trauma and as markers of vulnerability to borderline personality pathology. However, prior research has relied primarily on self-reports and lacks behavioural measures of epistemic stance. The present pre-registered studies introduce a novel behavioural task-the Balloon Analogue Risk Task for Epistemic Trust (BART-ET)-and examine its associations with borderline personality features, trauma history, and psychological distress. METHODS: Two cross-sectional studies were conducted with a combined sample of 273 you

Validating the Italian version of the Level of Personality Functioning Scale - Brief Form 2.0 (LPFS-BF 2.0): internal structure, temporal stability and construct validity.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary models of personality assessment emphasize a dimensional rather than a categorical framework for measuring an individual's level of personality functioning. This viewpoint has also been incorporated into official diagnostic manuals, such as the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD). Assessment instruments for personality functioning according to the AMPD are increasingly being developed and used, but controversies remain regarding the two-factor (vs. one-factor) structure and psychometric properties of such instruments in different countries. Clinical profiles of adolescent personality pathology: a latent structure examination of the Semi-Structured Interview for Personality Functioning DSM-5 (STiP-5.1) in a help-seeking sample.

BACKGROUND: Despite the introduction of dimensional conceptualisations of personality functioning in the latest classification systems, such as Criterion A of the Alternative Model of Personality Disorders in the DSM-5, heterogeneous clinical presentation of personality pathology remains a challenge. Relatedly, the latent structure of personality pathology as assessed by the Semi-Structured Interview for Personality Functioning DSM-5 (STiP-5.1) has not yet been comprehensively examined in adolescents. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the latent structure of the STiP-5.1, and, based on th
