Re-thinking global health sector efforts for HIV and tuberculosis epidemic control: promoting integration of programme activities within a strengthened health system.

BACKGROUND: The global financial crisis threatens global health, particularly exacerbating diseases of inequality, e.g. HIV/AIDS, and diseases of poverty, e.g. tuberculosis. The aim of this paper is to reconsider established practices and policies for HIV and tuberculosis epidemic control, aiming at delivering better results and value for money. This may be achieved by promoting greater integration of HIV and tuberculosis control programme activities within a strengthened health system. DISCUSSION: HIV and tuberculosis share many similarities in terms of their disease burden and the recommend

Sleep disturbances in an arctic population: the Tromsø Study.

BACKGROUND: Prevalence estimates for insomnia range from 10 to 50% in the adult general population. Sleep disturbances cause great impairment in quality of life, which might even rival or exceed the impairment in other chronic medical disorders. The economic implications and use of health-care services related to chronic insomnia represent a clinical concern as well as a pronounced public health problem. Hypnotics are frequently prescribed for insomnia, but alcohol and over-the-counter sleep aids seem to be more widely used by insomniacs than prescription medications. Despite the complex relat

Characteristics of volunteers and non-volunteers for voluntary counseling and HIV testing among unmarried male undergraduates.

The 2001 HIV sero-prevalence survey in Nigeria revealed a rate of 5.8 percent with those under the age of 25 years having the highest prevalence rate. Most University students fall within this age group. This study is part of a larger study on the sexual behavior of youths and young adults and was designed to compare the characteristics of volunteers and non-volunteers for voluntary confidential counseling and HIV testing (VCT) among males. Six hundred and nine male undergraduate students were randomly selected and enrolled for the study. Data were collected using a pre-tested questionnaire. O

Risk of overweight among adolescents who were breastfed as infants.

CONTEXT: Overweight during adolescence predicts short- and long-term morbidity as well as obesity in adulthood. The prevalence of overweight among adolescents is high and continues to increase. Physiological and behavioral mechanisms and preliminary epidemiologic data suggest that breastfeeding could lower the risk of subsequent obesity in adolescence. OBJECTIVE: To examine the extent to which overweight status among adolescents is associated with the type of infant feeding (breast milk vs infant formula) and duration of breastfeeding. DESIGN, SETTING, AND SUBJECTS: Survey of 8186 girls and

HIV risk perception, risk behavior, and seroprevalence among female commercial sex workers in Georgetown, Guyana.

A study of 108 female sex workers engaged in prostitution in Georgetown, Guyana, was made in April 1993. Based on interviews and procurement of blood samples, the study investigated relationships between HIV seroprevalences and AIDS knowledge, risk behaviors, client characteristics, and condom use. Street-walkers-as distinct from sex workers in bars, hotels, and Port Georgetown-tended to charge less, be worse off socioeconomically, and have clients who were similarly disadvantaged; they were therefore classified as belonging to a "lower" socio-economic stratum, while the other workers were cla

Barriers to and facilitators of healthcare access among people experiencing homelessness: a systematic scoping review.

This study aimed to identify and synthesize key barriers to and facilitators of healthcare access from the perspective of PEH to inform more equitable and sustainable health strategies. METHODS: A systematic scoping review was conducted in accordance with the guidelines of the Cochrane Collaboration and the Joanna Briggs Institute and was reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Art-Based Intervention to Promote Psychological Adjustment, Self-Concept, and Quality of Life in Children: Protocol for a Cluster Nonrandomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Children's mental health is a critical public health priority, with approximately 8% of children aged 10 years or younger experiencing mental, behavioral, or emotional disorders. Despite evidence supporting early intervention, access to mental health services remains limited, particularly for socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. Art-based interventions have emerged as promising approaches to support mental health and socioemotional development. However, significant gaps persist in understanding their efficacy, scalability, and long-term impact. OBJECTIVE: This study aims t

Who Is (Not) Engaging With a Digital Parenting Intervention in Tanzania? Analysis of Predictors Using Data From a Factorial Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Digital interventions offer a promising avenue for scalable parenting support in low- and middle-income countries, where in-person coverage remains limited. However, engagement disparities may reduce their potential for population-level impact. OBJECTIVE: This study examined caregiver-level predictors of engagement with ParentApp, a smartphone-based adaptation of the Parenting for Lifelong Health (PLH) for Teens program for caregivers of adolescents aged 10 to 17 years. METHODS: This study was nested within a cluster-randomized factorial trial of ParentApp in Mwanza, Tanzania, im

Two-dimensional synchronous stray light detection and correction method for imaging spectrometers.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder that requires sustained self-management to achieve optimal glycemic control and prevent long-term complications. Effective self-management involves adherence to medication, healthy diet, physical activity, blood glucose monitoring, and regular clinic attendance. However, evidence suggests that self-management practices remain suboptimal in many low- and middle-income countries, including Uganda, and data from regional referral hospitals are limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of self-management practi

Dietary curcumin encapsulated in nanostructured lipid carriers improves growth performance, feed utilization efficiency, and resistance to <em>Streptococcus agalactiae</em> in Nile tilapia (<em>Oreochromis niloticus</em>).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Streptococcosis caused by Streptococcus agalactiae represents a major constraint to Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) aquaculture, resulting in substantial economic losses. Curcumin (CUR) possesses antioxidant, antimicrobial, and immunomodulatory properties, but its practical application is limited by poor aqueous solubility and low bioavailability. This study aimed to develop CUR encapsulated in nanostructured lipid carriers (CUR-NLCs) and evaluate their effects on growth performance, feed utilization efficiency, and resistance against S. agalactiae infection in Nile ti
