WHO estimates of the global, regional, and national burden of 42 foodborne infectious and chemical hazards, 2000-21: an updated data synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Foodborne diseases are important causes of illness and death. The first estimates of their burden were published by WHO in 2015. We updated WHO estimates of the global, regional, subregional, and national foodborne disease burden caused by 42 infectious and chemical hazards in 2021, including time trends for 2000-21. METHODS: We provide a high-level summary of foodborne disease burden, expressed as incidence, deaths, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs). Data for burden estimation were provided from a WHO-commissioned series of systematic reviews on the incidence, aetiology,

The Early Cost-Effectiveness of a Novel Scalp Cooling Device to Alleviate Chemotherapy-Induced Alopecia in Patients with Early Breast Cancer.

BACKGROUND: Chemotherapy-induced alopecia is a common side effect with psychological impacts that affect quality of life. Up to 14% of patients may decline chemotherapy due to concerns over hair loss. While existing scalp cooling therapies can reduce alopecia, constraints including space, staffing, and extended chair time limit their use in health services. Hence, a novel scalp cooling cap ("Product X") was developed to address this gap. Product X is cordless and portable and does not require patients to remain in treatment chairs post-chemotherapy. This early-stage cost-effectiveness analysis

Peripheral cytokine distinguish recent from Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and active tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Recent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (MTB) carries a higher risk of progression to active tuberculosis (TB) than MTB infection, but the immune features that distinguish these stages remain unclear. METHODS: In this multicenter observational study in Jiangsu Province, China, we enrolled 228 participants with MTB infection (n = 88), recent infection (n = 44), or active TB (n = 96). Twelve plasma cytokines and chemokines were quantified using a multiplex Luminex platform. Group differences were assessed using non-parametric tests with a two-stage false discovery rate (FDR) cor

Intra-individual reliability of blood bicarbonate responses and gastrointestinal symptoms following sodium citrate supplementation.

BACKGROUND: Sodium citrate (SC) can elevate extracellular buffering capacity, yet the intra-individual reliability of its blood bicarbonate ([HCO₃-]) kinetics and gastrointestinal (GI) responses is unclear, limiting individualized dosing strategies. METHODS: Twelve healthy males (21 ± 1 yr) ingested a solution containing 0.5 g·kg-1 SC on two visits 3-7 days apart. Capillary [HCO₃-] was sampled at baseline and every 30 min to 240 min to derive baseline and peak [HCO₃-], time to peak (TTP), time to exceed +5 and +6 mmol·L-1 above baseline, and area under the curve (AUC). Reliability was quantif

Risk-based selection for carotid revascularisation using the IMPROVE score versus standard care in symptomatic carotid artery disease: a model-based cost-effectiveness analysis using pooled-data.

BACKGROUND: A clinical prediction model (IMPROVE) for ipsilateral ischaemic stroke risk in symptomatic patients with carotid disease was recently developed with good performance. We aim to evaluate the model-based cost-effectiveness of IMPROVE-based triage versus triage in care-as-usual (CAU) for optimal medical treatment (OMT) alone or carotid endarterectomy plus OMT. METHODS: A dataset of 678 patients with carotid disease and a recent ipsilateral ischaemic stroke, transient ischaemic attack or amaurosis fugax from four cohort studies informed a decision-analytic model. Stratification of pat

Effects of a Sugar-Sweetened Beverages Tax on Caries in Italy: A Modelling Study.

UNLABELLED: <p>Introduction: Despite efforts to reduce sugar consumption, Italy continues to experience high levels of caries, particularly among 12-year-old children. The introduction of a sugar tax is one strategy that gained traction as a mean of curbing excessive sugar intake. This study aimed to assess the potential impact of a sugar tax on reducing caries prevalence through the analysis of two scenarios: a hypothetical implementation of the tax in 2008 (Scen1), compared against actual 2017 data, and a projection of the effects of the planned 2025 tax extending to 2034 (Scen2). METHODS:

Dosimetry evaluation and uncertainty analysis of Cobalt-60 HDR brachytherapy for cervical cancer in resource-limited settings.

BACKGROUND: High-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy is essential in the treatment of locally advanced cervical cancer. While Iridium-192 (Ir-192) is commonly used, its short half-life imposes logistical and financial constraints, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Cobalt-60 (Co-60), with a longer half-life and lower operational costs, is a viable alternative. This study aims to evaluate the dosimetric performance and planning uncertainties associated with Co-60 HDR brachytherapy. METHODS: A retrospective dosimetric analysis was conducted on 30 patients with FIGO stage IIB-II

Event-level positive and negative reinforcement risk factors for alcohol use: Moderation by individual-level alcohol consequences and post-traumatic stress disorder symptom severity.

BACKGROUND: The multistage model of drug addiction posits that risk processes contributing to alcohol use change as individuals develop alcohol use disorders. However, few studies have tested this theory outside of the lab or at the event level. We assessed whether event-level associations between positive reinforcement (e.g., positive affect, sociability expectancies) and negative reinforcement risk factors (e.g., negative affect, tension reduction expectancies) and same-/next-day alcohol consumption varied as a function of an individual's level of alcohol consequences. Given elevated alcohol

Immune responses of different COVID-19 vaccination strategies by analyzing single-cell RNA sequencing data from multiple tissues using machine learning methods.

Multiple types of COVID-19 vaccines have been shown to be highly effective in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection and in reducing post-infection symptoms. Almost all of these vaccines induce systemic immune responses, but differences in immune responses induced by different vaccination regimens are evident. This study aimed to reveal the differences in immune gene expression levels of different target cells under different vaccine strategies after SARS-CoV-2 infection in hamsters. A machine learning based process was designed to analyze single-cell transcriptomic data of different cell types from

When months matter; modelling the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnostic pathway of Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

BACKGROUND: A diagnosis of MND takes an average 10-16 months from symptom onset. Early diagnosis is important to access supportive measures to maximise quality of life. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused significant delays in NHS pathways; the majority of GP appointments now occur online with subsequent delays in secondary care assessment. Given the rapid progression of MND, patients may be disproportionately affected resulting in late stage new presentations. We used Monte Carlo simulation to model the pre-COVID-19 diagnostic pathway and then introduced plausible COVID-19 delays. METHODS: The
