Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) is of particular interest because of its high recurrence rate and aggressive behavior. Two hundred fifty-six cases of OKC were reviewed for the age of the patient at diagnosis, sex of the patient, OKC location, and radiographic findings, and 132 patients with OKC were observed to estimate recurrence, which was analyzed for age, sex, location, and several histopathologic findings. OKCs occurred more frequently in men (58.6%) than in women (41.4%), and they occurred in patients within a wide age range, most commonly in patients in the third decade of life (28.9%), fo

BACKGROUND: Despite its frequency, there is a paucity of data on risk factors for basal cell carcinoma.
OBJECTIVE: We assessed potential risk factors for basal cell carcinoma in a population from southern Europe.
METHODS: This multicenter case-control study involved 528 newly diagnosed cases and 512 controls.
RESULTS: In the multivariate analysis, red hair, lighter colored eyes, high nevus counts on the upper limbs, and the presence of solar lentigines and actinic keratoses were all associated with basal cell carcinoma. The risk of the tumor increased in subjects who reported burning easily

A retrospective analysis was conducted on patients diagnosed with and treated for keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT) at Mashhad School of Dentistry between 1996 and 2006. The patients comprised 44 men and 30 women with a mean age of 27.08 years. Among the total of 83 lesions, 56 (67.5%) occurred in the mandible and 27 (32.5%) in the maxilla. Swelling tended to be the most common complaint (45.8%), while 24.1% of the lesions were diagnosed incidentally. Six patients (8.1%) with a total of 15 lesions had nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome; 28 lesions (33.7%) were associated with an impacted

Giant basal cell carcinoma (GBCC) is defined as a tumor ≥5 cm in diameter. GBCC of scalp usually requires extended resection of soft tissues, calvarium, and dura. In this study, we present 5 patients with GBCC of head, who underwent a single-stage combined scalp, calvarium, and dural reconstruction. Herein, we aim to discuss reconstruction methods, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage, duration of hospital stay, and tumor recurrency. Peroperative and postoperative follow-ups, defect areas, and performed calvarium reconstruction methods of 5 patients, who underwent complex scalp and calvarium reco

Basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) are the most frequent human cancer. Over 90% of all BCCs have a mutation in PTCH1 or smoothened, two conducting proteins of the Hedgehog pathway. They rarely progress deeply and metastasize; however, if they do, these advanced basal cell carcinoma become amenable to treatment by inhibiting the Hedgehog and the P13K-mTOR pathways. Such innovative drugs include vismodegib, cyclopamine, itraconazole, everolimus and a few other agents that are in early clinical development.

INTRODUCTION: Surgical excision of large malignant lower eyelid tumors may cause important full-thickness eyelid defects. The reconstruction of such defects must restore the physiologic function of the eyelid and also re-establish an acceptable aesthetic result.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We report the outcomes of full-thickness excision of tumors extending over half of the horizontal lid length, followed by reconstruction using a nasal chondromucosal graft (coming from the ipsilateral ala of the nose) and an upper eyelid myocutaneous flap. Histological analysis of the specimen identified the tum

INTRODUCTION: Skin cancer follow-up is a substantial burden to outpatient clinics. Few studies have investigated patients' views on skin cancer follow-up and cutaneous melanoma. The objective was to investigate patients' perceived benefits and the impact of follow-up.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study included an open sample of patients attending routine follow-up at the outpatient Departments of Plastic Surgery and Dermatology, Roskilde Hospital. A total of 218 follow-up patients diagnosed with cutaneous malignant melanoma (MM), non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) or actinic keratosis (AK) comple

BACKGROUND: Lacrimal drainage dysfunction is a common and problematic consequence of any pathologic process that interferes with the physiology or continuity of the lacrimal drainage apparatus. The literature widely documents several reliable, safe, and consistently well-tolerated techniques of nasolacrimal intubation for the repair of lacrimal system dysfunction; however, the role and the timing of such intubation in primary surgery involving the regional anatomy of the lacrimal system remain controversial. The authors evaluated the role of lacrimal intubation as a therapeutic and prophylacti

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to determine the risk of developing malignant melanoma (MM) in patients with a history of basal cell and/or squamous cell skin cancer (BCC/SCC) and to determine whether surveillance efforts can be directed toward these patients for the detection of early MMs.
METHODS: The study cohort was followed by annual total cutaneous examination (TCE). Controls consisted of individuals from the United States population matched for age, sex, and length of follow-up. The anatomic locations of the study cohorts' newly diagnosed MMs were plotted on an anatomic chart. The

To evaluate the clinicopathological characteristics, high-risk lifestyle factors (HRLF: chronic exposure to sun, betel quid, alcohol, and tobacco), and prognostic factors of lip cancer. The hospital records of patients with pathologically confirmed lip squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC, n = 112) and lip basal cell carcinoma (LBCC, n = 21) were reviewed. Differences in clinicopathological characteristics between LSCC and LBCC, upper and lower lip, and status of second primary tumors were compared by chi-square test and logistic regression. The prognostic factors for LSCC were analyzed by Cox regres

BACKGROUND: Smooth muscle tumors presenting as mediastinal soft tissue masses are extremely rare and often are mistaken for other neoplastic conditions.
METHODS: Ten cases of patients with malignant smooth muscle tumors presenting as mediastinal soft tissue masses were studied and correlated with their clinical behavior. Tissues were examined histologically and with immunohistochemical stains in all cases, and by electron microscopy in two cases.
RESULTS: The patients' ages ranged from 26 to 71 years (mean, 56 years); three were women, and seven were men. Three cases were located in the ante
