Differential responses of cerebral and renal oxygenation to altered perfusion conditions during experimental cardiopulmonary bypass in sheep.

We tested whether the brain and kidney respond differently to cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) and to changes in perfusion conditions during CPB. Therefore, in ovine CPB, we assessed regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO2 ) by near-infrared spectroscopy and renal cortical and medullary tissue oxygen tension (PO2 ), and, in some protocols, brain tissue PO2 , by phosphorescence lifetime oximetry. During CPB, rSO2 correlated with mixed venous SO2 (r = 0.78) and brain tissue PO2 (r = 0.49) when arterial PO2 was varied. During the first 30 min of CPB, brain tissue PO2 , rSO2 and renal cortical tissu

Precooling via immersion in CO2-enriched water at 25°C decreased core body temperature but did not improve 10-km cycling time trial in the heat.

This study compared the effects of precooling via whole-body immersion in 25°C CO2-enriched water (CO2WI), 25°C unenriched water (WI) or no cooling (CON) on 10-km cycling time trial (TT) performance. After 30 min of precooling (CO2WI, CON, WI) in a randomized, crossover manner, 11 male cyclists/triathletes completed 30-min submaximal cycling (65%VO2peak), followed by 10-km TT in the heat (35°C, 65% relative humidity). Average power output and performance time during TT were similar between conditions (p = 0.387 to 0.833). Decreases in core temperature (Tcore) were greater in CO2WI (-0.54 ± 0.2

Altered neural recruitment during single and dual tasks in athletes with repeat concussion.

Sports-related concussions (SRCs) pose significant challenges to college-aged athletes, eliciting both immediate symptoms and subacute cognitive and motor function impairment. While most symptoms and impairments resolve within weeks, athletes with repeat SRCs may experience heightened risk for prolonged recovery trajectories, future musculoskeletal injuries, and long-term neurocognitive deficits. This study aimed to investigate the impact of repeat SRCs on dual task performance and associated neural recruitment using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). A total of 37 college-aged ath

Hostile Attribution Bias Shapes Neural Synchrony in the Left Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex during Ambiguous Social Narratives.

Hostile attribution bias refers to the tendency to interpret social situations as intentionally hostile. While previous research has focused on its developmental origins and behavioral consequences, the underlying neural mechanisms remain underexplored. Here, we employed functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to investigate the neural correlates of hostile attribution bias. While undergoing fNIRS, male and female participants listened to and provided attribution ratings for 21 hypothetical scenarios where a character's actions resulted in a negative outcome for the listener. Ratings of

Neural correlates of stress-reactive rumination in depression - The role of childhood trauma and social anxiety.

Recent work showed an association of prefrontal dysfunctions in patients with Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) and social stress induced rumination. However, up to date it is unclear which etiological features of MDD might cause prefrontal dysfunctions. In the study at hand, we aimed to replicate recent findings, that showed prefrontal activation alterations during the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST) and subsequently increased stress-reactive rumination in MDD compared to healthy controls. Moreover, we aimed to explore the role of adverse childhood experiences and other clinical variables in th

Ambulatory Monitoring of Cerebrovascular Responses to Upright Posture and Walking in Older Adults With Heart Failure.

BACKGROUND: Insufficient cardiac output in individuals with heart failure (HF) limits daily functioning and reduces quality of life. Although lower cerebral perfusion, secondary to limitations in cardiac output, has been observed during moderate-intensity efforts, individuals with HF also may be at risk for lower perfusion during even low-intensity ambulatory activities. METHODS: We determined whether HF is associated with an altered cerebrovascular response to low-intensity activities representative of typical challenges of daily living. In this study, we monitored central hemodynamics and m

Similarities and Distinctions between Cortical Neural Substrates That Underlie Generation of Malevolent Creative Ideas.

Creativity can be driven by negative intentions, and this is called malevolent creativity (MC). It is a type of creativity that serves antisocial purposes and deliberately leads to harmful or immoral results. A possible classification indicates that there are three kinds of MC in daily life: hurting people, lying, and playing tricks. This study aimed to explore similar and distinct neural substrates underlying these different kinds of MC idea generation. The participants were asked to perform different MC tasks, and their neural responses were recorded using a functional near-infrared spectros

Cortical activity and spatiotemporal parameters during gait termination and walking: A preliminary study.

Gait termination requires an interaction between the biomechanical and neuromuscular systems to arrest forward momentum. Currently, the biomechanical characteristics of gait termination have been demonstrated; however, the neural mechanism of gait termination remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate cortical activity during gait termination using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Thirteen healthy younger adults (mean age:24.0 ± 1.7) participated in this study. All participants performed three experimental sessions: planned gait termination (PGT), unplanned gait termination
