BACKGROUND: Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a neglected tropical disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Nepal has implemented a national effort to eliminate LF by 2020 through mass drug administration (MDA) using diethylcarbamazine (DEC) and albendazole (ALB). We assessed the impact of MDAs on LF in selected districts of Nepal after the recommended six MDA rounds had been completed.
METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Baseline surveys were conducted in seven districts and mapping data were used as baseline in the other three districts before starting MDA in 2009. LF antigen (Ag) prevalence ranged fr…

BACKGROUND: Sri Lanka was one of the first countries to initiate a lymphatic filariasis (LF) elimination program based on WHO guidelines. The Anti-Filariasis Campaign provided 5 annual rounds of mass drug administration (MDA) with diethylcarbamazine plus albendazole in all 8 endemic districts from 2002-2006. Microfilaremia (Mf) prevalences have been consistently <1% in all sentinel and spot-check sites since 2006, and all evaluation units passed school-based transmission assessment surveys (TAS) in 2013. We previously reported results from comprehensive surveillance studies conducted in 2011-2…

BACKGROUND: India has made great progress towards the elimination of lymphatic filariasis. By 2015, most endemic districts had completed at least five annual rounds of mass drug administration (MDA). The next challenge is to determine when MDA can be stopped. We performed a simulation study with the individual-based model LYMFASIM to help clarify this.
METHODS: We used a model-variant for Indian settings. We considered different hypotheses on detectability of antigenaemia (Ag) in relation to underlying adult worm burden, choosing the most likely hypothesis by comparing the model predicted ass

The presence of large Trichuris spp. eggs in human faecal samples is occasionally reported. Such eggs have been described as variant Trichuris trichiura or Trichuris vulpis eggs. Within the frame of a randomised controlled trial, faecal samples collected from 115 Bulang individuals from Yunnan, People's Republic of China were subjected to the Kato-Katz technique (fresh stool samples) and the FLOTAC and ether-concentration techniques (sodium acetate-acetic acid-formalin (SAF)-fixed stool samples). Large Trichuris spp. eggs were noted in faecal samples with a prevalence of 6.1% before and 21.7%

OBJECTIVES: Hydatid disease is a zoonosis resulting from the growth in man of the larval form of Echinococcus granulosus. Involvement of the … cal examination of the surgical specimens confirmed the diagnosis. Eight patients were treated with albendazole. All patients were reviewed for a mean of 3 years and the progress was favourable.
CONCLUSION: Hydatid disease of the ribs is a very rare disorder and the diagnosis is difficult. It is sometimes an unexpected surgical finding but careful examinatio …

Bone hydatid disease is a rare pathology, characterized by its long clinical latency, the absence of radiological specificity as well as its challenging surgical treatment. We report an observation of pelvic bone hydatidosis in a 28-year-old patient, appearing with pain and stiffness of the hip as well as a degenerative aspect on the coxofemoral joint on X-ray. The treatment consisted of an extensive hemipelvectomy with femoro pelvic arthrodesis, completed by medical treatment. The functional result was excellent in spite of a break in the fixation material, which allowed a certain mobility at

Ultrasonic features were studied and criterions of differential diagnosis were elaborated for parasitic one-chamber cysts (types I-II according to Gharbi classification) and for true cysts in 35 patients with hydatid hepatic disease. Transcutaneous interventions under ultrasonic guidance with preliminary application of therapy course using vormil was applied as the method of radical treatment. Pathomorphosis of residual cavities in terms of observation from 1 to 10 years was studied. There was proved the efficacy of combined application of miniinvasive method of radical treatment of patients,

BACKGROUND: Helminthiasis is infestation of the human body with parasitic worms and it is estimated to affect 44 million pregnancies, globally, each year. Intestinal helminthiasis is associated with blood loss and decreased supply of nutrients for erythropoiesis, resulting in iron deficiency anaemia. Over 50% of the pregnant women in low- and middle-income countries suffer from iron deficiency anaemia. Though iron deficiency anaemia is multifactorial, hook worm infestation is a major contributory cause in women of reproductive age in endemic areas. Antihelminthics are highly efficacious in tre

Alveolar echinococcosis is a zoonosis which infects primarily the liver, and secondary involvement of other organs is common. However, exclusive extrahepatic involvement is exceedingly rare, and isolated splenic involvement even more so. Workup, differential diagnosis and management of isolated splenic alveolar echinococcosis are discussed and literature is reviewed based on a clinical case.

Cysticercosis is an infestation by Cysticercus cellulosae, the larval form of the cestode Taenia solium. C. cellulosae is preferentially encysted in the brain, striated muscles, and subcutaneous tissue. Seizures, hydrocephalus, meningitis, and focal symptoms caused by large cysts are the principal manifestations. Neuroophthalmologic signs are common with the meningitic and hydrocephalic manifestations of the disease. The first ophthalmologic clues of cysticercosis are typically papilloedema, pupillary abnormalities, or nystagmus. We report an atypical presentation of neurocysticercosis in two

We described a rare case of pulmonary and parotid cyst for echinococcus granulosus in an eighty-one-year-old patient. Lesion was discovered in the lung owing to a clinical presentation. A swelling was the only sign in the parotid gland. Time between lung and parotid excision was 14 days. Time of hospitalizations was 4+/-1 day.

Schistosomiasis caused by infection with Schistosoma mansoni is a serious public health burden in 38 of the 56 districts of Uganda. This article reviews the initial experience of the national control programme. Launched in 2003, this started with a pilot phase with the main aim of utilizing the experience to formulate feasible and appropriate methods of drug delivery. Overall, 432,746 people were treated and coverage was 91.4% in schools and 64.7% in communities. The issues raised by independent evaluators included that most communities did not participate in the selection of community drug di

BACKGROUND: With increasing migration tropical diseases such as Loa loa infections are becoming more frequent in Europe. While the ocular diagnosis is usually straight forward, systemic work-up and treatment requires an interdisciplinary approach. We review the diagnostic and therapeutic work-up of ocular Loa loa infections based on a series of 4 cases that presented between 1998 and 2004.
HISTORY AND SIGNS: The first symptoms in all cases were ocular irritations occurring 2 months to 8 years after a trip to West Africa. One case presented with a swollen upper eyelid without a visible worm. I

Visceral larva migrans (VLM) most commonly occurs as a febrile disease of childhood particularly affecting children between 1 and 7 years of age. Pulmonary, dermatological, hepatic, lymphatic, cardiac, rheumatological and neurological manifestations may occur. VLM seems to be a rare disease in adults. We report the imaging findings of a woman with hepatic toxocariasis. Ultrasonography showed a solitary hepatic lesion measuring 4 x 3 cm, displaying a hypoechoic-heterogeneous pattern with ill-defined borders and distal acoustic enhancement, located in the right sub-diaphragmatic area. Two enlarg
