Metrizamide in pediatric myelography.

Metrizamide, a new water-solution iodinated contrast medium, was evaluated in 63 infants and children, most of whom had lumbosacral or low thoracic lesions. The diagnostic quality was found to be good, and no serious complications or permanent sequelae were encountered. Chief complications were headache, nausea, vomiting and fever. No myoclonic spasms or convulsions were seen. The advantages and disadvantages of metrizamide are discussed.

Three-quarter prone approach to the pineal-tentorial region. Report of seven cases.

We report our preliminary results (seven cases) with a three-quarter prone approach to the pineal-tentorial region using an opening beneath the midline. The technique we have used eliminates the risk of air embolism because the head is just over the right atrium, the table remaining in an horizontal plane. Using the natural effect of gravity, it is no more necessary to use retraction on the occipital lobe. So, hemianopsia is eliminated. We confirm the results of other teams who have used this approach which seems to us to be the best way to treat any lesion in the pineal-tentorial area.

Neurocysticercosis causing sudden death.

Neurocysticercosis causes significant morbidity due to neurologic manifestations including seizures. Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is responsible for mortality associated with seizure disorders. This case highlights death from neurocysticercosis and possible SUDEP in a nonendemic country.

Spinal leptomeningeal metastases from prostate cancer.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

OBJECTIVE: Prostate cancer is a well known cause of spinal column metastases; however, an intradural location is extremely rare. It is considered to be a type of leptomeningeal spread. Cerebral seeding has usually occurred by the time of presentation. Due to a poor prognosis, surgery is rarely indicated, and controversially discussed. PATIENT AND RESULTS: We review the known cases of spinal leptomeningeal prostate cancer spread, including our patient, who developed paraparesis over 6 weeks, 3 years after prostate cancer was diagnosed. Following surgical decompression and resection, the patien

Tenascin in the injured rat optic nerve and in non-neuronal cells in vitro: potential role in neural repair.

The distribution of tenascin was examined in the lesioned adult rat optic nerve and central nervous system (CNS) non-neuronal cells in vitro, by means of a double immunofluorescence technique. Tenascin-like immunoreactivity is localized to the leptomeninges and astrocytes that border the site of optic nerve transection. Anti-tenascin labeling was observed as early as 24 hours after transection, when it appeared as a fine interface between leptomeninges and neural tissue. The anti-tenascin labeling increased in the cells at this border zone during the next 2 weeks, and disappeared 18-21 days af

Barrier functions of the leptomeninges: a study of normal meninges and meningiomas in tissue culture.

The anatomical arrangement of the pia mater suggests that it may act as a regulatory interface between cerebrospinal fluid and the surface of the brain and between arterioles within the brain and the surrounding neural tissue. However, the functional aspects of such a barrier are difficult to evaluate in vivo. In the present study, the enzymic content and endocytotic capacities of normal leptomeningeal cells in situ and meningioma cells in confluent tissue culture are examined in relation to barrier functions of meningeal cells. Growth of cells in culture was obtained from human fetal and newb

Cerebrospinal fluid beta-glucuronidase activities in patients with central nervous system metastases.

beta-Glucuronidase activities were determined in cerebrospinal fluid from 249 patients suffering from various neurological diseases. Reference values were established as 9-27 mU/l. Marked elevations of cerebrospinal beta-glucuronidase activities were observed in patients with bacterial and carcinomatous meningitis. Slight elevations of cerebrospinal beta-glucuronidase activities were observed in epidural and parenchymal metastases from solid tumours. Comparison was made with the determination of total protein, glucose and lactate dehydrogenase in cerebrospinal fluid. Cerebrospinal beta-glucuro

RNF213-TRAF2 interaction enhances inflammatory responses via NF-κB activation in moyamoya disease.

Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a cerebrovascular disorder that predominantly affects East Asian populations. It is characterized by progressive stenosis or occlusion of terminal internal carotid arteries. Although inflammatory and autoimmune responses have been implicated in MMD pathogenesis, the precise molecular mechanisms underlying the disease remain poorly understood. RNF213, a key susceptibility gene for MMD, has been linked to inflammatory signaling; however, its role in NF-κB-driven inflammation remains unclear. Here, we identify RNF213 as a critical regulator of the IL-6 amplifier (IL6-Amp

Fourth Ventricle Epidermoid Cyst: Case Report of Precision Telovelar Microsurgery, Functional Preservation, and Lifelong Surveillance.

Background and Clinical Significance: Fourth ventricular epidermoid cysts are among the least frequently encountered intracranial tumors (less than 1%). Their slow growth pattern along cisternal and subarachnoid spaces, and their close proximity to neurovascular structures (brainstem-cerebellar), create difficulty for surgical treatment. Total removal is often complicated by the capsule's adherence to eloquent structures and requires a thoughtful surgical approach of weighing radical resection versus neurologic/function preservation. This case description provides an example of using careful c
