SPINA classification of cleft lip and palate: A suggestion for a complement.

Spina's classification uses the incisive foramen as an anatomic reference to define groups I, II, and III. In some cases, the morphological manifestation of the cleft arises simultaneously pre- and postforamen, but without communicating. Considering that group I refers to isolated clefts of the primary palate and group III includes isolated clefts of the secondary palate, the authors suggest the classification group IIa for the association of these two occurrences in the same patient, thus associating two classifications. The original structure proposed by Spina is maintained and simply comple…

The newer classifications of the chiari malformations with clarifications: An anatomical review.

In 1891, Hans Chiari described a group of congenital hindbrain anomalies, which were eventually named after him. He classified these malformations into three types (Chiari malformations I, II, and III), and four years later added the Chiari IV malformation. However, numerous reports across the literature do not seem to fit Chiari's original descriptions of these malformations, so researchers have been encouraged to propose new classifications to encompass these variants (e.g., Chiari 0, Chiari1.5, and Chiari 3.5 malformations). Moreover, there is a continued misunderstanding and misuse of the …

Reliability and Clinical Utility of the CARDS Classification for Degenerative Spondylolisthesis.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to determine the reliability and clinical utility of the of the proposed CARDS classification for degenerative spondylolisthesis. BACKGROUND: The Clinical and Radiographic Degenerative Spondylolisthesis (CARDS) classification system was recently proposed as an alternative to the Meyerding system for classifying degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS). Unlike Meyerding, CARDS considers other relevant radiographic findings such as disk space collapse and segmental kyphosis to stratify DS into 4 radiographically dis…

On the use of on-cow accelerometers for the classification of behaviours in dairy barns.

Analysing behaviours can provide insight into the health and overall well-being of dairy cows. Automatic monitoring systems using e.g., accelerometers are becoming increasingly important to accurately quantify cows' behaviours as the herd size increases. The aim of this study is to automatically classify cows' behaviours by comparing leg- and neck-mounted accelerometers, and to study the effect of the sampling rate and the number of accelerometer axes logged on the classification performances. Lying, standing, and feeding behaviours of 16 different lactating dairy cows were logged for 6h with …

Diagnosis, classification, and treatment of femoropopliteal artery in-stent restenosis.

In-stent restenosis is a pervasive challenge to the durability of stenting for the treatment of lower extremity ischemia. There is considerable controversy about the criteria for diagnosis, indications for treatment, and preferred algorithm for addressing in-stent restenosis. This evidence summary seeks to review existing information on strategies for the treatment of this difficult problem.

Evaluation of a new and simple classification for endoscopic sinus surgery.

OBJECTIVE: In 2013, the Japanese Rhinologic Society proposed a simple classification for endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS). This classification consists of five procedures (type I, fenestration of the ostiomeatal complex, with uncinectomy and widening of the natural ostium; type II, single-sinus procedure, with manipulating the inside of the sinus; type III, polysinus procedure; type IV, pansinus procedure; type V, extended procedure beyond the sinus wall). The clinical relevance of this classification in chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and paranasal sinus cyst was evaluated. STUDY DESIGN: A retros…

Hypodontia: An Update on Its Etiology, Classification, and Clinical Management.

Hypodontia, or tooth agenesis, is the most prevalent craniofacial malformation in humans. It may occur as part of a recognised genetic syndrome or as a nonsyndromic isolated trait. Excluding third molars, the reported prevalence of hypodontia ranges from 1.6 to 6.9%, depending on the population studied. Most affected individuals lack only one or two teeth, with permanent second premolars and upper lateral incisors the most likely to be missing. Both environmental and genetic factors are involved in the aetiology of hypodontia, with the latter playing a more significant role. Hypodontia individ

Menière and Friends: Imaging and Classification of Hydropic Ear Disease.

BACKGROUND: Over 75 years ago, endolymphatic hydrops was discovered as the pathologic correlate of Menière's disease. However, this pathologic finding could be ascertained only in postmortem histologic studies. Due to this diagnostic dilemma and the variable manifestation of the various audiovestibular symptoms, diagnostic classification systems based on clinical findings have been used hitherto. METHODS: A review of the literature of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of hydropic ear disease. RESULTS: Recent developments of high resolution MR imaging of the inner ear have now enabled us to vis…

Surgical Masculinization of the Breast: Clinical Classification and Surgical Procedures.

INTRODUCTION: Aesthetic breast area improvements for gynecomastia and gender dysphoria patients who seek a more masculine appearance have increased recently. We present our clinical experience in breast masculinization and a classification for these patients. METHODS AND MATERIALS: From July 2003 to May 2014, 68 patients seeking a more masculine thorax underwent surgery. They were divided into five groups depending on three factors: excess fatty tissue, breast tissue, and skin. A specific surgical treatment was assigned according to each group. The surgical treatments included thoracic liposu…

A comprehensive functional classification of cleft hand: The DAST concept.

CONTEXT: Phenotypic expressions of the congenital cleft hand are variable and might baffle even the experienced as to the choice of surgery. The morphological parameters defining the anomaly dictate not only the functional capacity of the anomalous hand but also the degree of possible surgical restoration. Despite a large number of classifying systems available, none encompass all the relevant issues. AIMS: The purpose of this work is to present an all-inclusive and universally acceptable classification of the deformity which would graphically represent the entire gamut of possible presentati…

The "challenging" fractures of the odontoid process: a review of the classification schemes.

Fractures of the odontoid process seem to have an unclear and not well-understood behavior. This is well demonstrated in the literature as there is a disagreement in many fields, including the patterns of fractures, the percentage of pseudarthrosis or the appropriate treatment that is required. This situation makes the fracture itself a "challenging" one. Indeed, despite the existence of extensive literature, there are still many unresolved problems concerning these fractures. We recognize six main classification schemes of the odontoid process fractures which clearly demonstrate the presence …
