RetINaBox: A Hands-On Learning Tool for Experimental Neuroscience.

An exciting aspect of neuroscience is developing and testing hypotheses via experimentation. However, due to logistical and financial hurdles, the experiment and discovery component of neuroscience is generally lacking in classroom and outreach settings. To address this issue, here we introduce RetINaBox: a low-cost open-source electronic visual system simulator that provides users with a hands-on tool to discover how the visual system builds feature detectors. RetINaBox includes an LED array for generating visual stimuli and photodiodes that act as an array of model photoreceptors. Custom sof

A lightweight intrusion detection approach for CAN bus using depthwise separable convolutional Kolmogorov Arnold network.

Ensuring the cybersecurity of modern vehicles is paramount as connected and autonomous systems become increasingly prevalent. However, existing intrusion detection systems (IDS) often face challenges such as imbalanced datasets and high computational demands, limiting their practical deployment in automotive environments. To address these limitations, we employ spectral normalization GAN to synthesize anomalous data, achieving a balanced distribution across four attack categories and normal traffic. We further propose a lightweight classification model, named Depthwise Separable Convolutional

Numerical approach to an age-structured Lotka-Volterra model.

We study the impact of an age-dependent interaction in a structured predator-prey model. We present two approaches, the PDE (partial differential equation) and the renewal equation, highlighting the advantages of each one. We develop efficient numerical methods to compute the (un)stability of steady-states and the time-evolution of the interacting populations, in the form of oscillating orbits in the plane of prey birth-rate and predator population size. The asymptotic behavior when species interaction does not depend on age is completely determined through the age-profile and a predator-prey

Are Heavy Pnictogen-π Interactions Really "π Interactions"?

The noncovalent interactions of heavy pnictogens with π-arenes play a fundamental role in fields like crystal engineering or catalysis. The strength of such bonds is based on an interplay between dispersion and donor/acceptor interactions, and is generally attributed to the presence of π-arenes. Computational studies of the interaction between the heavy pnictogens As, Sb and Bi and cyclohexane, in comparison with previous studies on the interaction between heavy pnictogens and benzene, show that this concept probably has to be revised. A thorough analysis of all the different energetic compone

Modeling Molecules under Pressure with Gaussian Potentials.

The computational modeling of molecules under high pressure is a growing research area that augments experimental high-pressure chemistry. Here, a new electronic structure method for modeling atoms and molecules under pressure, Gaussians On Surface Tesserae Simulate HYdrostatic Pressure (GOSTSHYP) approach, is introduced. In this method, a set of Gaussian potentials is distributed evenly on the van der Waals surface of the investigated chemical system, leading to a compression of the electron density and the atomic scaffold. Since no parameters other than pressure need to be specified, GOSTSHY

Application and Experimental Validation of a Multibody Model with Weakly Coupled Lateral and Vertical Dynamics to a Scaled Railway Vehicle.

In this paper, a multibody dynamic model of a railway vehicle that assumes that vertical and lateral dynamics are weakly coupled, has been experimentally validated using an instrumented scaled vehicle running on a 5-inch-wide experimental track. The proposed linearised model treats the vertical and lateral dynamics of the multibody system almost independently, being coupled exclusively by the suspension forces. Several experiments have been carried out at the scaled railroad facilities at the University of Seville in order to test and validate the simulation model under different working condi

Massive peritoneal cavity calcification in the course of advanced ovarian cancer: a case report.

Ovarian cancer usually does not give any clinical signs until it reaches a large size. This condition is often associated with the occurrence of metastases within the peritoneal cavity, pelvic and abdominal cavities. Ovarian cancer can spread by intraperitoneal implantation, by way of the lymphatic system, and also through the systemic circulation. Even when the tumor reaches a large size, the symptoms are not specific and may resemble other ailments. Therefore, ovarian cancer is detected in most cases only in the third and fourth level of advancement. Peritoneal calcification occurs in many d

Quantification of coronary artery Stenosis by Area Stenosis from cardiac CT angiography.

Non-invasive cardiac computed tomography angiography (CTA) is widely used to assess coronary artery stenosis and give clinical decision-making support to clinicians. The severity of stenosis lesion is commonly graded by a range of percent Diameter Stenosis (DS), which can introduce false positive diagnoses or over-estimation, triggering unnecessary further procedures. In this paper, a system and the associate methods to quantify stenosis by the percent Area Stenosis (AS) from cardiac CTA is presented. In the process, coronary artery tree is segmented and the centerline is extracted by Hessian

Emergent total arch replacement for acute type A aortic dissection with aberrant right subclavian artery in a systemic lupus erythematosus patient.

A 50-year-old man with a history of systemic lupus erythematosus and hemodialysis developed acute type A aortic dissection. Computed tomography demonstrated acute type A aortic dissection with chronic distal arch aneurysm and aberrant right subclavian artery that arose from the proximal descending aorta and ran in a retro-esophageal track. Emergent total arch replacement was performed using antegrade cerebral perfusion with circulatory arrest. Both common carotid arteries and the left subclavian artery were chosen as selective cerebral perfusion sites. The right subclavian artery was snared du

Advanced biofeedback from surface electromyography signals using fuzzy system.

The aims of this study were to develop a fuzzy inference-based biofeedback system and investigate its effects when inducing active (shoulder elevation) and passive (relax) pauses on the trapezius muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity during computer work. Surface EMG signals were recorded from clavicular, descending (bilateral) and ascending parts of the trapezius muscles during computer work. The fuzzy system readjusted itself based on the history of previous inputs. The effect of feedback was assessed in terms of muscle activation regularity and amplitude. Active pause resulted in non-unif

Relative efficiency of abdominal muscles in spine stability.

Using an iterative kinematics-driven nonlinear finite element model, relative efficiency of individual abdominal muscles in spinal stability in upright standing posture was investigated. Effect of load height on stability and muscle activities was also computed under different coactivity levels in abdominal muscles. The internal oblique was the most efficient muscle (compared with the external oblique and rectus abdominus) in providing stability while generating smaller spinal loads with lower fatigue rate of muscles. As the weight was held higher, stability deteriorated requiring additional f

[Portal venous system calcifications. Study of 3 cases and review of the literature].

Three cases of calcifications of the portal system are reported in men aged 42, 53 and 40 years old. Two patients had alcoholic cirrhosis, and one had familial congenital hepatic fibrosis, respectively. Calcifications were discovered fortuitously on plain abdominal films. Ultrasound and computed tomography studies, and in two cases, angiography, confirmed that calcifications were located within the vein walls. The veins involved were the portal vein in 3 cases, the splenic vein in 2 cases, and the superior mesenteric and left gastric veins in one case each. Investigations demonstrated splenopo

Mass Spectrometry Based Multi-Omics Integration: Analytical Methods and Biological Applications.

RATIONALE: Biological systems are regulated through strongly interconnected molecular layers that cannot be accurately resolved using single-omics approaches. Although genomics and transcriptomics provide essential regulatory information, they often face obstacles to reflect functional molecular outcomes. Mass spectrometry (MS)-based multi-omics integration is currently recognized as a central analytical strategy to overcome this limitation by enabling direct, high-resolution measurement of proteins, metabolites, and lipids, thereby supporting systems-level biological interpretation and transl

Spatial Motion of Arytenoid Cartilage Using Dynamic Computed Tomography Combined with Euler Angles.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the feasibility of dynamic computed tomography in recording and describing the spatial motion characteristics of the arytenoid cartilage. METHODS: Dynamic computed tomography recorded the real-time motion trajectory of the arytenoid cartilage during inspiration and phonation. A stationary coordinate system was established with the cricoid cartilage as a reference and a motion coordinate system was established using the movement of the arytenoid cartilage. The Euler angles of the arytenoid cartilage movement were calculated by transformation of the two coordinate syst

Automated chest screening based on a hybrid model of transfer learning and convolutional sparse denoising autoencoder.

OBJECTIVE: In this paper, we aim to investigate the effect of computer-aided triage system, which is implemented for the health checkup of lung lesions involving tens of thousands of chest X-rays (CXRs) that are required for diagnosis. Therefore, high accuracy of diagnosis by an automated system can reduce the radiologist's workload on scrutinizing the medical images. METHOD: We present a deep learning model in order to efficiently detect abnormal levels or identify normal levels during mass chest screening so as to obtain the probability confidence of the CXRs. Moreover, a convolutional spar

Gait Event Detection in Controlled and Real-Life Situations: Repeated Measures From Healthy Subjects.

A benchmark and time-effective computational method is needed to assess human gait events in real-life walking situations using few sensors to be easily reproducible. This paper fosters a reliable gait event detection system that can operate at diverse gait speeds and on diverse real-life terrains by detecting several gait events in real time. This detection only relies on the foot angular velocity measured by a wearable gyroscope mounted in the foot to facilitate its integration for daily and repeated use. To operate as a benchmark tool, the proposed detection system endows an adaptive comput

Introducing DeBRa: a detailed breast model for radiological studies.

Currently, x-ray mammography is the method of choice in breast cancer screening programmes. As the mammography technology moves from 2D imaging modalities to 3D, conventional computational phantoms do not have sufficient detail to support the studies of these advanced imaging systems. Studies of these 3D imaging systems call for a realistic and sophisticated computational model of the breast. DeBRa (Detailed Breast model for Radiological studies) is the most advanced, detailed, 3D computational model of the breast developed recently for breast imaging studies. A DeBRa phantom can be constructe

Assessing variational likelihood estimation in network formation models.

Networks are often a useful way to represent complex social and economic systems. Stochastic models for such networks should parsimoniously reflect the complexity while being both interpretable and tractable. The class of Exponential-family Random Graph Models (ERGMs) is very expressive and flexible in its representation of complex phenomena. However, the estimation and fitting of realistic ERGMs are hampered by the computational challenges of likelihood-based inference. Recently, a deterministic method based on a variational mean-field approximation was proposed that is much less expensive to

Nonlinear thermodynamic computing out of equilibrium.

We present the design for a thermodynamic computer that can perform arbitrary nonlinear calculations in or out of equilibrium. Simple thermodynamic circuits, fluctuating degrees of freedom in contact with a thermal bath and confined by a quartic potential, display an activity that is a nonlinear function of their input. Such circuits can therefore be regarded as thermodynamic neurons, and can serve as the building blocks of networked structures that act as thermodynamic neural networks, universal function approximators whose operation is powered by thermal fluctuations. We simulate a digital m
