Female hormones affect symptom severity in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

There is circumstantial evidence that reproductive events can influence symptom severity of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We sent self-report questionnaires to 350 female outpatients with OCD to examine the relationship between the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, menopause, hormonal contraceptives, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and symptom severity of OCD. Yale-Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale scores were used at three serial time points during the menstrual cycle to assess symptom severity. One hundred and one out of 350 questionnaires (29%) were returned and completed. Forty-nin

Turkısh women's experıences of early and forced marrıage: a meta-synthesıs study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of early or forced marriage among women in Türkiye is 24.2%. The limited knowledge of family planning among these young women leads to higher rates of unintended pregnancies, postnatal depression, frequent and early pregnancies, as well as an increase in health-compromising miscarriages and curettages, which collectively contribute to elevated maternal and child mortality rates. AIM: The study seeks to construct a comprehensive and nuanced understanding of the marital experiences of women in Türkiye who were married at a young age or against their will. By synthesiz

Pregnancy in a Young Patient with Metastatic HER2-Positive Breast Cancer-Between Fear of Recurrence and Desire to Procreate.

Breast cancer is the most frequent neoplasm among women and the second leading cause of death by cancer. It is the most frequent cancer diagnosed during pregnancy. Pregnancy-associated breast cancer is defined as breast cancer that is diagnosed during pregnancy and/or in the postpartum period. Data about young women with metastatic HER2-positive cancer who desire a pregnancy are scarce. The medical attitude in these clinical situations is difficult and nonstandardized. We present the case of a 31-year-old premenopausal woman diagnosed in December 2016 with a stage IV Luminal HER2-positive meta

Biological effects of a maternal ED on pregnancy and foetal development: a review.

The aim of this paper was to review the literature on the biological effects of a maternal eating disorder (ED) (and relevant comorbidities) in pregnancy on mothers and in particular on the foetus. We also aimed to highlight possible mechanisms of risk for long-term consequences in the offspring. Relevant literature was searched for using PubMed, PsychInfo and Google Scholar and manually through relevant research papers. The consequences of maternal EDs in pregnancy on EDs symptoms, psychopathology and perinatal outcomes are discussed. A developmental model of possible risk mechanisms for adve

[Mother suffering from borderline personality disorder: Which specific care in the periodal period? A literature review].

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common and severe disorder characterized by unstability of self-image, unstable affect, and unstable interpersonal relationships. Women with BPD would give birth as much as other women, but according to several studies, BPD mothers have a reduced sensitivity to their babies and a poor interpretation of their emotions; this would interfere in mother-baby interaction and in psycho-affective development of the baby, with the risk to develop psychiatric pathologies in adulthood. In this context several professionals have developed different interventions

A summary of recent findings on birth outcomes and developmental effects of prenatal ETS, PAH, and pesticide exposures.

Inner-city minority populations are high-risk groups for adverse birth outcomes and also more likely to be exposed to environmental contaminants, including environmental tobacco smoke (ETS), benzo[a]pyrene B[a]P, other ambient polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (global PAHs), and residential pesticides. The Columbia Center for Children's Environmental Health (CCCEH) is conducting a prospective cohort study of 700 northern Manhattan pregnant women and newborns to examine the effects of prenatal exposure to these common toxicants on fetal growth, early neurodevelopment, and respiratory health. Regulatory problems and associated factors among infants in Arba Minch health and demographic surveillance system sites, southern Ethiopia.

INTRODUCTION: Infant regulatory problems are a common source of concern for parents, and they increase the risk of impaired infant-caregiver bonding. Despite their impact, they are often overlooked in Ethiopia. Hence, this study aimed to determine the prevalence and associated factors of infant regulatory problems in Arba Minch Health and Demographic Surveillance System sites in southern Ethiopia. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 451 mother-infant pairs from February 15 to March 15, 2022. Regulatory problems were assessed using diagnostic interviews for reg

Adherence to heart failure treatment in patients with peripartum cardiomyopathy.

AIMS: Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is characterized by left ventricular (LV) dysfunction developing towards the end of pregnancy or in the first months postpartum. Although about 60% of women with PPCM (the majority of which are prescribed evidence based heart failure [HF] medications) show LV recovery within 6 to 12 months, others remain with persistently impaired LV function. Poor adherence to medical therapy represents a major cause of avoidable hospitalizations, disability, and death in other cardiovascular conditions. In this study, we aimed to determine drug adherence to HF therapy a

Fear of childbirth and associated factors among low-risk pregnant women.

The aims of this study were to determine prevalence of childbirth fear among uncomplicated pregnant women in Siriraj Hospital and possible associated factors. A total of 305 uncomplicated, singleton pregnant women were enrolled during early third trimester. All participants were interviewed regarding baseline demographic, social, economic, family, and obstetric characteristics. Fear of childbirth (FOC) was evaluated by Thai version of Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire Version A (W-DEQ). W-DEQ scores and level of FOC were compared between various characteristics to determine po

Mind-body interventions during pregnancy for preventing or treating women's anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety during pregnancy is a common problem. Anxiety and stress could have consequences on the course of the pregnancy and the later development of the child. Anxiety responds well to treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy and/or medication. Non-pharmacological interventions such as mind-body interventions, known to decrease anxiety in several clinical situations, might be offered for treating and preventing anxiety during pregnancy. OBJECTIVES: To assess the benefits of mind-body interventions during pregnancy in preventing or treating women's anxiety and in influencing

The effectiveness of Technology-assisted Cascade Training and Supervision of community health workers in delivering the Thinking Healthy Program for perinatal depression in a post-conflict area of Pakistan - study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Rates of perinatal depression in low and middle income countries are reported to be very high. Perinatal depression not only has profound impact on women's health, disability and functioning, it is associated with poor child health outcomes such as pre-term birth, under-nutrition and stunting, which ultimately have an adverse trans-generational impact. There is strong evidence in the medical literature that perinatal depression can be effectively managed with psychological treatments delivered by non-specialists. Our previous research in Pakistan led to the development of a success

An association and haplotype analysis of porcine maternal infanticide: a model for human puerperal psychosis?

An association analysis using the Illumina porcine SNP60 beadchip was performed to identify SNPs significantly associated with porcine maternal infanticide. We previously hypothesised that this was a good animal model for human puerperal psychosis, an extreme form of postnatal mood disorder. Animals were selected from carefully phenotyped unrelated infanticide and control groups (representing extremes of the phenotypic spectrum), from four different lines. Permutation and sliding window analyses and an analysis to see which haplotypes were in linkage disequilibrium (LD) were compared to identi

Prepregnancy Care and Counseling: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Prepregnancy care and counseling optimize maternal health before conception to improve outcomes for mothers and infants. In the US, 66.4% of reproductive-aged women have at least 1 modifiable risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes. OBSERVATIONS: For all individuals desiring pregnancy, recommended interventions include folic acid supplementation; cessation of tobacco, alcohol, cannabis, and opioids; immunizations against hepatitis B virus, varicella, and rubella; and screening for syphilis and HIV. Folic acid use before pregnancy is associated with reduced fetal neural tube def

Understanding Safety in Online Mental Health Forums: Realist Evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Online forums are used widely to facilitate mental health peer support. However, concerns exist regarding potential harm associated with their use, and little is known about forum safety from the user's perspective. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to understand how users experience safety within online mental health peer support forums. Following previous research, safety was conceptualized with reference to both experiences of harm and feelings of interpersonal safety within the forum environment. METHODS: Data were collected from 42 semistructured realist interviews and 504 cross-

Labor prior to cesarean delivery associated with higher post-discharge opioid consumption.

BACKGROUND: Severe acute post-cesarean delivery (CD) pain has been associated with an increased risk for persistent pain and postpartum depression. Identification of women at increased risk for pain can be used to optimize post-cesarean analgesia. The impact of labor prior to CD (intrapartum CD) on acute post-operative pain and opioid use is unclear. We hypothesized that intrapartum CD, which has been associated with both increased inflammation and affective distress related to an unexpected surgical procedure, would result in higher postoperative pain scores and increased opioid intake. Randomized controlled trial of intravenous acetaminophen for postcesarean delivery pain control.

BACKGROUND: Cesarean delivery is a common surgery in the United States, with 1.3 million performed during 2009.1 Obstetricians must balance the growing concern with opioid abuse, dependence, and side effects with optimal postoperative pain control. Intravenous acetaminophen may represent an additional method to decrease the reliance on opioid medications and improve postoperative pain following cesarean delivery. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to determine whether the administration of intravenous acetaminophen following routine scheduled cesarean delivery would decrease the need f

Intimate partner violence, power, and equity among adolescent parents: relation to child outcomes and parenting.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) victimization and perpetration and power imbalances in parenting partners may result in poor outcomes for parents and children. Previous work in this area has focused on the maternal experiences, neglecting to examine paternal effects. The present study aimed to elucidate the role of IPV, power, and equity in parenting and child outcomes in an urban sample of adolescent parents. 159 male and 182 female parents in a relationship were recruited through university-affiliated hospitals. Power, equity, and IPV were measured at 6 months post-partum and were used as pr

Subdural hygroma accompanied by parenchymal and subarachnoid haemorrhage after epidural analgesia in an obstetric patient.

BACKGROUND: Anaesthetists need to know the different causes of persistent headache or a change in level of consciousness following epidural analgesia for labour. Failure to recognise these neurological complications can lead to delayed diagnoses, with subsequent serious implications. METHODS: We present a patient who was re-admitted for postural headache resulting from an unrecognised dural puncture during an epidural for pain relief while in labour. During the interview, the patient confirmed drug use (cocaine), so she was evaluated by a psychiatrist with possible post-partum psychosis or dr
