Investigation of the Effects of High-Intensity, Intermittent Exercise and Unanticipation on Trunk and Lower Limb Biomechanics During a Side-Cutting Maneuver Using Statistical Parametric Mapping.

Whyte, EF, Richter, C, O'Connor, S, and Moran, KA. Investigation of the effects of high-intensity, intermittent exercise and unanticipation … chain may be limited by traditional discrete point analysis. We recruited 28 male, varsity, Gaelic footballers (21.7 ± 2.2 years; 178.7 ± 14.6 m; 81.8 ± 11.4 kg) to perform anticipated and unanticipated side-cutting maneuvers before and after a high-intensity, intermittent exercise protocol (HIIP). Vascular Quadrilateral Space Syndrome in 3 Overhead Throwing Athletes: An Underdiagnosed Cause of Digital Ischemia.

Vascular quadrilateral space syndrome (vQSS) is an underdiagnosed cause of extremity ischemia, pain, and paresthesia in overhand throwing athletes. The mechanism of vQSS is thought to result from repeated abduction and external rotation of the arm leading to a distraction injury of the posterior circumflex humoral artery (PCHA) as this courses through the quadrilateral space. This trauma may cause dissection and dissecting aneurysm formation. Thrombus from this arterial injury then embolizes down the arm resulting in the symptomatic presentation. Patients were often presented after multiple em

Long-term and cumulative effects of sports concussion on motor cortex inhibition.

OBJECTIVE: Using transcranial magnetic stimulation paradigms, this study investigated motor cortex integrity as a function of an athlete's prior history of concussions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Motor cortex excitatory and inhibitory mechanisms were studied in athletes using four different transcranial magnetic stimulation protocols, namely 1) resting motor threshold, 2) intracortical inhibition and intracortical facilitation in a paired-pulse paradigm, 3) excitability of the corticospinal system using an input-output curve, and 4) intracortical inhibition in a cortical silent-period paradigm. Iatrogenic acute hyponatraemia in a college athlete.

Hyponatraemia is one of the most common electrolyte abnormalities, leading to significant morbidity and mortality. In the most basic sense, hyponatraemia can be due to sodium loss or fluid excess. The extracellular fluid status is used to clinically divide hyponatraemia into three categories to help to determine both the cause and treatment required. Hyponatraemic patients can be categorised on the basis of their fluid status as hypovolaemic, euvolaemic, or hypervolaemic. Another distinction to make in evaluating hyponatraemia is whether the onset was acute or chronic in nature. The case prese

Playing with metal: fracture implants and contact sport.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the outcome of athletes returning to contact sport with indwelling fracture implants. METHOD: A retrospective analysis of professional rugby union players competing in the South Wales premier league. RESULTS: Fifteen athletes were identified who had returned to competitive rugby union with retained fracture implants during the period 1990-97. After fracture fixation, the players resumed their preinjury level of contact sport within one to 12 months. Only two athletes suffered complications in relation to the retained implant, whereas the other 13 athletes played for up t

Did the Implementation of a Bye Week Decrease Injury Rates in the National Hockey League?

BACKGROUND: In the 2016-2017 National Hockey League (NHL) season, a bye week was introduced to give players rest in the middle of the season. Bye weeks and midseason breaks are a common practice in other sports such as football and soccer. PURPOSE: To compare the rates of different types of injuries, games missed due to injury, and number of multiple injuries by players between previous uninterrupted seasons and the succeeding seasons with bye weeks scheduled. STUDY DESIGN: Descriptive epidemiology study. METHODS: This study retrospectively looked at NHL injuries from 2000 to 2023. Injured …

Symmetry does not Indicate Recovery: Single-leg Hop Before and After a Lower Extremity Injury.

Current recommendations for return-to-play decision-making involve comparison of the injured limb to the uninjured limb. However, the use of the uninjured limb as a comparison for hop testing lacks empirical evidence. Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of lower extremity injury on limb symmetry and performance on the single-leg hop for distance. Two-hundred thirty-six adolescent athletes completed the single-leg hop for distance before the beginning of the season (pre-injury). Forty-four adolescent athletes sustained a lower extremity injury (22 ankle and 12 knee) and

Femoral head avulsion fracture with malunion to the acetabulum: a case report.

The case of a patient who sustained an avulsion fracture of the femoral head (Pipkin Type I) that was unrecognized is described. The patient was referred to the authors' institution four months after injury, and radiographic studies showed a malunited avulsion fracture of the femoral head to the acetabulum. The patient subsequently went on to an excellent result after surgical debridement. The authors recommend additional radiographic studies in cases to exclude unrecognized fractures where a possible hip subluxation may have occurred.

Polyester fibre prosthetic anterior cruciate ligament implant rupture: necrosis of ingrown connective tissue.

AIMS: To describe the histopathological and microanalytical features in seven cases of ruptured Apex(R) polyester (Terylene(R)) fibre anterior cruciate ligament prosthesis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Transmitted and polarized light microscopy was performed in all cases; one case was investigated by immunohistochemistry, transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, with backscatter and X-ray detectors for elemental microanalysis. Of 100 consecutive patients with anterolateral rotatory instability analyzed, 84 were males and the average age was 27.4 years. Over 50 per cent were injured while participating in athletics and 40 per cent were injured during daily activities. The group averaged 1.2 operations prior to diagnosis. The most frequently performed procedures were medial meniscectomy, pes anserinus transfer and medial capsular reefings. Eighty-four of 100 patients underwent surgery during the study period.
