Orthographic Transparency Enhances Morphological Segmentation in Children Reading Hebrew Words.

Morphological processing of derived words develops simultaneously with reading acquisition. However, the reader's engagement in morphological segmentation may depend on the language morphological richness and orthographic transparency, and the readers' reading skills. The current study tested the common idea that morphological segmentation is enhanced in non-transparent orthographies to compensate for the absence of phonological information. Hebrew's rich morphology and the dual version of the Hebrew script (with and without diacritic marks) provides an opportunity to study the interaction of

Predicting alcohol use disorder risk in firefighters using a multimodal deep learning model: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Firefighters constitute a high-risk occupational cohort for alcohol use disorder (AUD) due to chronic trauma exposure, yet traditional screening methodologies relying on self-report instruments remain compromised by systematic underreporting attributable to occupational stigma and career preservation concerns. This cross-sectional investigation developed and validated a multimodal deep learning framework integrating T1-weighted structural magnetic resonance imaging with standardized neuropsychological assessments to enable objective AUD risk stratification without necessitating c

Phonological dyslexia and phonological impairment: an exception to the rule?

The condition known as phonological dyslexia involves very poor reading of non-words, with otherwise good word reading performance [e.g. Derouesné & Beauvois, 1979; Sartori, G., Barry, C., & Job, R. (1984). Phonological dyslexia: A review. In R. N. Malatesha & H. A. Whitaker (Eds.), Dyslexia: A global issue. The Hague: Martinus Nijhoff Publishers]. Theoretical accounts of this non-word reading impairment suggest disruption to either a component of a non-lexical orthographic-phonological reading route [that is specifically involved in reading non-words; Coltheart, M., Rastle, K., Perry, C., Lan

A Prospective Clinical and Radiological Study of Symptomatic Upper Lumbar Disc Herniation in the Indian Population.

Introduction The upper lumbar spine is anatomically predisposed to neural compression due to a relatively narrow spinal canal, the presence of the conus medullaris and proximal cauda equina, and reduced segmental mobility. This distinct anatomy can lead to a wide range of clinical presentations, from nonspecific polyradiculopathy to cauda equina syndrome. The variability in symptoms and the unique anatomical features often complicate surgical decision-making. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the association between upper lumbar disc level (L1-L2, L2-L3, L3-L4) and neurologic

DCSM-Unet: Dual-path heterogeneous encoder with content-aware guidance and differential feature learning.

High-precision medical image segmentation is a prerequisite for accurate computer-aided diagnosis, yet it faces a persistent challenge in balancing fine-grained local detail extraction with global context modeling. Conventional CNN-based methods excel at analyzing local textures-critical for delineating boundaries in pathology-but suffer from limited receptive fields. Conversely, pure Transformer or state-space models (SSMs) capture the long-range dependencies needed for anatomical understanding at the cost of computational efficiency or high-frequency detail fidelity. Existing hybrid approach

Domain-specific effects of prenatal exposure to PCBs, mercury, and lead on infant cognition: results from the Environmental Contaminants and Child Development Study in Nunavik.

BACKGROUND: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), methylmercury (MeHg), and lead (Pb) are environmental contaminants known for their adverse effects on cognitive development. OBJECTIVES: In this study we examined the effects of prenatal exposure to PCBs, MeHg, and Pb on cognitive development in a sample of Inuit infants from Arctic Québec. METHODS: Mothers were recruited at local prenatal clinics. PCBs, mercury (Hg), Pb, and two seafood nutrients-docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and selenium (Se)-were measured in umbilical cord blood. Infants (n = 94) were assessed at 6.5 and 11 months of age on the F

Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic and principal components analysis investigations into biochemical effects of three model hepatotoxins.

1H NMR spectroscopy of urine combined with pattern recognition (PR) methods of data analysis has been used to investigate the time-related biochemical changes induced in Sprague-Dawley rats by three model hepatotoxins: alpha-naphthyl isothiocyanate (ANIT), d-(+)-galactosamine (GalN), and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT). The development of hepatic lesions was monitored by conventional plasma analysis and liver histopathology. Urine was collected continuously postdosing up to 144 h and analyzed by 600-MHz 1H NMR spectroscopy. NMR spectra of the urine samples showed a number of time-dependent pert

Improving RSVP EEG Decoding Performance under Auditory Perturbation: A Dual-View Model with Robust Distillation.

OBJECTIVE: Decoding event-related potentials (ERPs) from Rapid Serial Visual Presentation (RSVP) EEG offers a promising approach for target recognition in brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). However, auditory noise in real-world environments degrades target-ERP decoding, substantially reducing accuracy and robustness. METHODS: We propose a novel time-frequency dual-view network (TFDV-Net) with temporal and time-frequency branches. Cross-view global features guide local feature extraction to fully exploit complementary information in both views and obtain a more complete representation of task-r

CT-based AI system for quantitative and integrated management of acute respiratory distress syndrome in critical care.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) remains a major challenge in critical care, with mortality exceeding 40%. Its diagnosis and management depend on multi-step procedures, invasive arterial blood gas analysis, and subjective CT interpretation, often leading to inconsistency, delayed intervention, and increased procedural burden. To address these limitations, we develop AutoARDS, an all-in-one foundation model that transforms routine chest CT into a quantitative platform, enabling integrated and reproducible assessment of diagnosis, progression, oxygenation, physiology, and prognosis wit

Always Getting Lost: Defining Developmental Topographical Disorientation (DTD)-A Systematic Literature Review.

Developmental topographical disorientation (DTD) refers to a condition of highly impaired navigation ability in healthy individuals. DTD often leads to severe consequences in daily life, affecting education and professional choices and limited everyday mobility. Since its first description in 2009, a substantial number of empirical studies on DTD have appeared, but a clear clinical definition of DTD that can be used to develop a behavioral assessment tool is not yet available. The aim of the current study was to shed more light on the precise behavioral characteristics of DTD by examining the

Photophysical Mechanisms of Photobiomodulation Therapy as Precision Medicine.

Despite a significant focus on the photochemical and photoelectrical mechanisms underlying photobiomodulation (PBM), its complex functions are yet to be fully elucidated. To date, there has been limited attention to the photophysical aspects of PBM. One effect of photobiomodulation relates to the non-visual phototransduction pathway, which involves mechanotransduction and modulation to cytoskeletal structures, biophotonic signaling, and micro-oscillatory cellular interactions. Herein, we propose a number of mechanisms of PBM that do not depend on cytochrome c oxidase. These include the photoph

Cell phenotypes and differentiative transitions in mouse submandibular salivary gland defined with monoclonal antibodies to mammary epithelial cells.

Recognition of distinct cell phenotypes within a given organ is important in defining cell relationships during development and in analyzing the role of cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions in growth and differentiation. Phenotypic definition of dissociated heterogeneous cell populations is also essential for studies on mechanisms regulating expression of cell lineage-specific gene products. Mouse submandibular salivary gland (SSG) cell phenotypes in the course of differentiative transitions in vivo and after enzymatic dissociation in primary culture were defined with monoclonal antibodies (

P253 Next-generation phenotyping facilitates the identification of structural brain malformations in rare disorders through computational brain MRI analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Many rare disorders, particularly neurodevelopmental conditions, manifest structural brain malformations. Just as dysmorphologists rely on facial gestalt recognition to identify syndromes, radiologists and neurologists face similar challenges in identifying the "brain gestalt" of rare disorders-especially when encountering rare conditions or those they have not previously seen. Next-generation phenotyping (NGP) has been proven capable of supporting clinicians in recognizing facial dysmorphic patterns associated with the underlying syndrome through training on thousands of patient
