PURPOSE: Immunosuppression is an important risk factor for anal condyloma progression; however, its effects on postoperative outcomes remain unclear. In the present study, we investigated risk factors and recurrence rates in immunocompromised patients requiring surgery for medically intractable anal condyloma.

The cost effectiveness of 25% podophyllin resin and 0.5% podophyllotoxin solution in the treatment of genital warts in Genitourinary Medicine Clinic attenders was studied. Although the average treatment cost for a course of podophyllotoxin was more than that for podophyllin resin (20.75 pounds v. 14.95 pounds respectively) the overall cure rate with podophyllotoxin was 66% as opposed to 34.6% with podophyllin. When the costing of secondary treatment options was considered the cost per patient cured of warts with podophyllin resin was 27.15 pounds compared with 25.73 pounds for podophyllotoxin

A patient with a Buschke-Loewenstein tumour associated with human papillomavirus type 6/11 is reported. He was intralesionally treated with human recombinant alpha-2b interferon (9 x 10(6) IU/day) three times weekly. The tumour completely disappeared within 5 months of continuous treatment which was well tolerated. Sixteen months after completion of therapy the patient remains well and free of disease.

Interferons (IFN) provide a systemic alternative for the therapy of human papillomavirus (HPV) induced anogenital warts. Local therapy cannot totally eliminate latent viral genome in the perilesional epithelium. This causes the danger of new exacerbations. The purpose of this study was to characterize the epidemiological features of cancer of the penis in Finland. After histological re-examination and exclusions, the final series comprised 269 patients with cancer of the penis diagnosed and reported to the Finnish Cancer Registry between 1955 and 1977. The age-adjusted incidence rate of cancer of the penis decreased slightly from the 1960s onwards and was on the order of 0.5 per 100,000 person-years in the 1970s. The overall prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) cervical infection in 131 women attending a family planning clinic was 7% (HPV 6/11, 16, 18, 31) by dot blot hybridisation, 53% (HPV 11, 16, 31) by polymerase chain reaction (PCR), and 56% by the two methods combined. In one out of 22 cases of histologically diagnosed bowenoid papulosis, we could detect human papilloma virus (HPV) capsid antigen in paraffin sections fixed with formalin by means of the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) test; there were no positive findings regarding biopsies taken from Bowen's disease. Southern blot hybridization technique revealed HPV 16 DNA in 8 out of 10 cases of bowenoid papulosis; there was one positive identification out of 5 cases of Bowen's disease.

Condyloma acuminatum is a human papilloma virus (HPV)-associated papillary lesion of the lower anogenital tract. Although a majority are benign, rarely the coexistence of high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) or invasive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) with condyloma has been reported, which is important to recognize and diagnose. In this study, we examined the clinicopathologic, immunohistochemical (IHC), and HPV mRNA in situ hybridization (RISH) signal patterns of 63 condylomas, 35 condylomas with concurrent HSIL, 15 condylomas with concurrent SCC, 8 warty HSILs, and 17 warty SCCs.
