Biological width following immediate implant placement in the dog: flap vs. flapless surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the marginal soft tissue healing process after flap or flapless surgery in immediate implant placement in a dog model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was carried out on five Beagle dogs. Four implants were placed in the lower jaw in each dog immediately after tooth extraction. Flap surgery was performed before the extraction on one side (control) and flapless on the other (test). After 3 months of healing, the dogs were sacrificed and prepared for histological analysis. RESULTS: Ten implants were placed in each group. Two failed (one of each group). The length of the j

Consensus-based recommendations for the diagnosis and management of dentin hypersensitivity.

These consensus recommendations for the diagnosis and management of dentin hypersensitivity were developed by a broadly constituted board of dentists and dental hygienists drawn from general dental practice, specialist practice, academia and research from across Canada, joined by 2 international dentists with subject matter expertise. The need for consensus recommendations was made evident by the lack of clear and robust evidence in the dental literature, as well as confusion about diagnosis and management demonstrated by an educational needs assessment survey. High prevalence of the condition

Esthetic soft-tissue augmentation adjacent to dental implants.

Patients and clinicians are becoming increasingly aware of the need to improve dental esthetics. After tooth extraction or trauma, there may be residual hard- or soft-tissue defects. These may be related to deficits in the bone or soft tissue. The evaluation of preoperative study casts, radiographs, and photographic documentation can aid the clinician in determining which types of augmentation are necessary. If adequate bone volume is present, the implants are placed according to protocol. Soft-tissue defects can be significantly reduced by implanting various biomaterials between the inner bor

Scleroderma: oral manifestations and treatment challenges.

Scleroderma is a connective tissue disorder of excess collagen production characterized by intense fibrosis of the skin, with internal organ involvement. A wide range of oral sequelae-including microstomia, oral mucosal/gingival fibrosis, xerostomia, and mandibular bone resorption-complicates maintenance of oral health and dental treatment. The literature is reviewed, and two cases are presented.

Titaniumtetrafluoride for treatment of hypersensitive dentine.

Dentine hypersensitivity in cervical areas and severe dentine sensitivity in teeth prepared for restorations were treated with a titaniumtetrafluoride solution. Patients included in the study complained spontaneously about the sensitivity in intact dentine surfaces. Thirty patients with at least one tooth on each side of the maxilla and/or mandible experiencing moderate or severe sensitivity in cervical areas participated. The degree of sensitivity was determined by scraping an explorer over the dentine surface and by air blast. At least one sensitive tooth on one side of the jaw was treated w

A patient-centered periodontal program for the 1990s, Part I.

There has been much debate as to the indications for and outcomes of nonsurgical dental therapy. This two-part series will discuss questions regarding non-surgical v surgical therapies, including how the dental team can best relate findings to patients.

Engineering a multilayered micro-vascularized soft tissue graft: Integrating polyurethane composite nanofibres with co-cultures of human adipose-derived endothelial and stem cells.

Soft tissue defects and injuries, such as gingival recession, those requiring dermal tissue filling, and other indications, affect millions worldwide, yet autologous grafting remains the standard of care in most instances, despite donor site morbidity and limited tissue availability. Tissue-engineered alternatives have strong potential to overcome these limitations. We evaluated an 8 mm-diameter, 1 mm-thick layered electrospun composite formed from polar/hydrophobic/ionic polyurethane with methacrylated gelatin (FD-PHI) and polycarbonate urethane (PCNU), seeded with a co-culture of human adipo…

Immediate implant placement in Type II socket using vestibular socket therapy with pericardial membrane versus simultaneous guided bone regeneration (randomized controlled clinical trial).

INTRODUCTION: Immediate implant placement with flap elevation and guided bone regeneration in Type II sockets often leads to midfacial gingival recession and compromised esthetics. To address these limitations, vestibular socket therapy (VST) has been proposed as an alternative technique. Our objective is to compare vestibular socket therapy using pericardium membrane versus conventional flap and guided bone regeneration (GBR) for immediate implant placement in type II sockets regarding bone and soft-tissue outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty patients with Type II sockets were divided int…

Capturing of interdental areas with digital and conventional impression systems and their impact on automatic tooth segmentation in CAD software: an in vitro study.

OBJECTIVES: This in vitro study evaluated and compared the accuracy of digital versus conventional impression systems in reproducing interde … he conventional impression showed no change. Segmentation errors clustered in teeth with pronounced gingival recession; healthy gingiva yielded higher accuracy. Significant differences between raw and segmented data were found for TRI5‑wl (p = 0.027) and 3800‑wl (p = 0.044). CONCLUSIONS: Within the limits of this in vitro study, IOS outperform conventional impressi …

No significant differences were observed for analgesic consumption, gingival recession, or overall complications. Closed surgical exposure offers advantages in early postoperative pain and discomfort but requires longer surgical and eruption times. Both techniques appear comparable regarding complications and periodontal outcomes. The …

SMART in Geriatric Dentistry: Rationale and Evidence Gaps for Root Caries Management.

BACKGROUND: Population ageing has resulted in a growing number of older adults retaining natural dentition, with a consequent rise in the prevalence of root caries lesions (RCLs). These lesions are strongly associated with gingival recession, hyposalivation, multimorbidity, polypharmacy, and functional dependence, all of which can limit tolerance to conventional restorative care and compromise long-term restoration survival. Minimal intervention dentistry has, therefore, gained increasing relevance in geriatric practice. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) and atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) …

The following parameters were assessed on teeth: mobility, probing pocket depth (PPD), gingival recession (GR), pain at palpation, sensitivity and vitality - through percussion test, cold test (CT) and electric pulp test (EPT) - and external root resorption (ERR). OBJECTIVES: Distolingual root of the permanent mandibular first molar (PMFM-DLR) has been frequently reported, which may complicate the trea … iodontal clinical parameters, including clinical attachment loss (CAL), probing pocket depth (PPD), gingival recession (GR), and furcation involvement (FI). RESULTS: The patient-level prevalence and tooth-level prevalence of DLR in mandibular first molars were 29.4% and 26.3%, respectively. Multiple linear regression analysis suggested that bone loss at the lingual …
