Epithelial-Myoepithelial Carcinoma of the Maxilla Arising From Minor Salivary Glands of Hard Palate: A Rare Case Report.

Epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of salivary glands. It is specifically found in the major salivary glands. The cases that emerge from minor salivary glands are rarely described. Histologically, it commonly exhibits a characteristic biphasic pattern consisting of epithelial and myoepithelial components. The histopathological resemblance to other benign and malignant neoplasms that also display myoepithelial characteristics makes the differential diagnosis challenging. Each differential diagnosis requires a very different management approach. Considering the diffi

A WNT protein therapeutic accelerates consolidation of a bone graft substitute in a pre-clinical sinus augmentation model.

AIM: Autologous bone grafts consolidate faster than bone graft substitutes (BGSs) but resorb over time, which compromises implant support. We hypothesized that differences in consolidation rates affected the mechanical properties of grafts and implant stability, and tested whether a pro-osteogenic protein, liposomal WNT3A (L-WNT3A), could accelerate graft consolidation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A transgenic mouse model of sinus augmentation with immunohistochemistry, enzymatic assays, and histology were used to quantitatively evaluate the osteogenic properties of autografts and BGSs. Effect of different thresholds on the accuracy of linear and volumetric analysis of native- and grafted-bone.

The study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of Micro-CT in linear and volumetric measurements in native (NB) and grafted bone (GB) areas. A total of 111 biopsies of maxillary sinuses grafted with deproteinized bovine bone (DBB) in humans were evaluated. The linear measurements were performed to measure the length of the NB and GB. Furthermore, the amount of mineralized tissues at the NB and GB was performed. In the histomorphometry analysis the percentage of mineralized tissues at the NB and GB was obtained in two histological sections while the mineralized tissues were measure in the micro-CT va

Solid-variant aneurysmal bone cysts in the craniofacial skeleton: the role of genomic analysis.

BACKGROUND: Solid variant aneurysmal bone cysts (SVABCs) are a rare but well-described subtype of ABCs. While classic ABCs are readily identified radiographically, SVABCs lack these characteristic radiographic features and thus have a wide differential diagnosis on presentation (including Ewing sarcoma, Langerhans cell histiocytosis, osteosarcoma, metastasis, and giant cell tumor). Genomic/molecular analyses are often necessary for the diagnosis of SVABCs, with USP6 rearrangements being a characteristic finding. We present two cases in which genomic analysis was critical in the diagnosis of SV

Correlation between computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and cross-sectional anatomy of the head of the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus, Linnaeus 1758).

The current work aimed to study the anatomical features of the guinea pig's head by two medical imaging techniques: computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and their correlation with the anatomical cross-sectional images. Six adult healthy guinea pigs were used in the present study. Two heads were imaged by CT scanner and then by MRI. The examined heads were cut sagittally and transversely, and two skulls were macerated. The anatomical features were identified on the anatomical sections and compared with the tomographic and MRI images obtained. Data were presented as thr

Histologic, Histomorphometric, and Clinical Analysis of the Effects of Growth Factors in a Fibrin Network Used in Maxillary Sinus Augmentation.

This randomized controlled clinical trial evaluated the effect of mineralized plasmatic matrix (MPM), comprised of synthetic graft and platelet concentrates, on new bone formation and volume stability over time in maxillary sinus lifting (MSL). Unilateral MSL was performed in 20 patients with either beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) or MPM grafts (10 sinuses each). Six months postsurgery, specimens were obtained with a trephine bur prior to implant placement in 39 cases. Volumetric changes in sinus augmentation were analyzed between 1 week (T-I) and 6 months (T-II) postsurgery. Histomorphometr

Sinus Development and Pneumatization in a Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a genetically diverse disease which causes impaired mucociliary clearance, and results in pulmonary, otologic, and rhinologic disease in affected patients. Genetic mutations in multiple genes impair the ability of patients to clear mucous from the lungs, middle ear, and sinonasal cavity and lead to chronic pulmonary and sinonasal symptoms. METHODS: We identified 17 PCD patients who had available CT scans. Volumes for bilateral maxillary, sphenoid, and frontal sinuses were calculated. A control population of patients who had preoperative CT scans

Does endoscopic sinus surgery alter the biomechanics of the orbit?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to determine if removal of ethmoid cell septations as commonly performed in endoscopic sinus surgery leads to a change in orbital wall fracture patterns and the force required to create them. METHODS: Six fresh-frozen cadaveric heads were acquired and underwent endoscopic uncinectomy, maxillary antrostomy, and anterior and posterior ethmoidectomy on one, randomized, side. The contralateral sinuses were used as intra-specimen control. Hyaluronic acid gel globe injections were performed to simulate normal intra-ocular pressure. Post-op CT scans confirmed

Technical aspects of nasal cavity surgery through the Le Fort I down-fracture approach: An otolaryngologist's point of view based on 90 patients' experience.

BACKGROUND: The downfracture access to septoand turbinoplasty during maxillary osteotomy may be recommended in many cases. One or both of these laryngological interventions may be necessary when, after the patient's clinical evaluation, either an impaired function of nasal breathing or a deviated septum are present. The main postsurgical risk of the procedure is the destabilization of the cartilaginous septum position and its relation to adjacent anatomical structures, a change in the shape of the nose and the presence of a supratip break. OBJECTIVES: In this paper, the authors present their
